A unique approach to Foreign Body Retrieval
The American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2003Co-Authors: Kashyap N Katwala, Khondker IslamAbstract:Clinical Presentation: A 46 year old morbidly obese male presented to the emergency room with acute onset of dysphagia to solid food after having lunch. Patient was only able to swallow small quantity of liquid. Patient denied excessive salivation, nausea, vomiting, hematemesis, abdominal pain or chest pain. Past medical history was significant for recent laparoscopic band ligation for weight reduction. There was no previous history of achalasia or reflux symptoms. He was not taking any medications. He was neither an alcoholic nor a smoker. Physical exam revealed a morbidly obese male in no acute distress. Endoscopic examination was performed which revealed mildly dilated esophagus with moderate amount of saliva. A grape was noted in the distal esophagus. It appeared to cause intermittent distal esophageal obstruction. Attempts at pushing the grape through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) with the scope were hampered by the slithering of the grape along the side of the scope. Attempts to grasp the grape with tripod forceps were unsuccessful due to slippery surface of the grape. A unique approach was adopted to retrieve the grape. An esophageal band ligator was applied to the tip of the scope. The grape was suctioned and anchored into the barrel and removed successfully.

Intravascular Foreign bodies: loop-snare Retrieval system with a three-lumen catheter.
Radiology, 1992Co-Authors: S Furui, T Yamauchi, K Makita, Koji Takeshita, T Irie, Tsuchiya K, S Sawada, Hironobu Nakamura, Masatoshi OkazakiAbstract:A Foreign Body Retrieval system composed of a three-lumen catheter, a guide wire, and a wire loop nearly perpendicular to the axis of the catheter was used to retrieve catheter fragments located in the inferior vena cava in two patients and in the superior vena cava in one patient. Fragments were looped within 1 minute of catheterization and were retrieved without complication. Catheter fragments placed in the pulmonary artery of one dog were also successfully retrieved.

Accidental Foreign Body in the right atrium presenting with shock

Iatrogenic cause of Foreign bodies left behind in chambers of the heart is documented but accidental Foreign bodies in the right atrium are rarely reported. We present such a case in an 18-month-old baby with features of sepsis. Urgent intervention led to the Foreign Body Retrieval and the control of sepsis in this patient.

Imaging guided thoracic interventions.

DondelingerAbstract:Interventional Radiology is a technique based medical specialty, using all available imaging modalities (fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance, angiography) for guidance of interventional techniques for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Actual, percutaneous transthoracic needle biopsy includes core needle biopsy besides fine needle aspiration. Any pleural, pulmonary or mediastinal fluid or gas collection is amenable to percutaneous pulmonary catheter drainage. Treatment of haemoptysis of the bronchial artery or pulmonary artery origin, transcatheter embolization of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and pseudoaneurysms, angioplasty and stenting of the superior vena caval system and percutaneous Foreign Body Retrieval are well established routine procedures, precluding unnecessary surgery. These techniques are safe and effective in experienced hands. Computed tomography is helpful in pre- and postoperative imaging of patients being considered for endobronchial stenting. Many procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis, thus increasing the cost-effectiveness of radiologically guided interventions in the thorax.

Percutaneous vascular Foreign Body Retrieval: experience of an 11-year period.

KurdzielAbstract:Over an 11-year period, percutaneous Retrieval of intravascular Foreign bodies was performed in 12 patients, using urological forceps and Retrieval baskets. No clinically significant complication occurred, success rate was 100%. Review of 176 cases from the literature showed a success rate of 90%.
