  • PTSD-SUD Comorbidities in the Context of Psychological Injury and Law

    Abstract:

    Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) are both common psychological problems and they are frequently comorbid. However, there is little longitudinal research that can disentangle their temporal relationship towards determining the mechanisms in their comorbidity. Furthermore, the extant research does not consider possible confounds to diagnosis that are relevant to the area of psychological injury and law, such as exclusion of cases of malingering after appropriate assessment and testing. This paper reviews the literature on the question of comorbidity of PTSD and SUD towards establishing preliminary conclusions that could serve directions for needed research in the area, and with potential application to individual assessment and court purposes. There are four major models in how PTSD and SUD relate—self-medication, high risk, susceptibility, and shared vulnerability. Overall, the self-medication model is supported, but not exclusively. Recent research is examining the different models in these regards with respect to individual differences, including in negative emotionality/constraint, emotional/dysregulation, and patterns in PTSD’s different clusters. Further research is required from a Forensic Perspective that uses the appropriate populations, rules out malingering in the cases studied, and controls other confounds applicable to the Forensic context.

  • Psychotherapy for Psychological Injury: A Biopsychosocial and Forensic Perspective

    Abstract:

    This article reviews the predominant psychological approaches to therapy and other treatments in the field of psychological injury. Mostly, they concern cognitive behavior therapy and its variants. However, because of the simultaneous physical injuries or physiological effects that accompany these types of injury, practitioners should adopt an integrated biopsychosocial approach in treatment (Sperry, L., Treatment of chronic medical conditions: Cognitive-behavioral therapy strategies and integrative treatment protocols. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 2006; Treatment of chronic medical conditions: Cognitive-behavioral therapy strategies and integrative treatment protocols. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, 2009). The paper presents a componential model of therapy that integrates the cognitive-behavioral, biopsychosocial, and Forensic approaches. More research needs to be undertaken that takes into account the difficulties of conducting therapy with individuals who are expressing psychological injury. This will help in the quest to formulate evidence-based but flexible practice guidelines. The paper concludes with a model that may serve to scaffold the numerous psychotherapies that are available into a more coherent framework.

    Abstract:

    The articles in the present special issue on the area of psychological injury and law broaden understanding of the area by considering topics outside the range of the seven major areas that mark the field. In the articles in this special issue, common themes include: (a) having comprehensive, recent literature reviews, (b) presentation of models related to psychological injury and law in which existing models are integrated, (c) integration of biopsychological and Forensic Perspectives, and (d) consideration of development or change processes, and examination of causality. (e) All the articles discuss possible improvements to the DSM-IV; for example, there should be a separate, sixth axis pertaining to causality.

    This paper examines stress and coping from the Perspective of psychological injury, which concerns injuries attributed to an event at claim. The paper explores current conceptualizations of stress and coping and includes discussion of resilience. In particular, the paper focuses on biopsychosocial approaches, given their relevance to the area of psychological in jury and law. The paper presents a model of coping that integrates biopsychosocial and Forensic aspects. As part of the model, the author develops the concept of Forensic appraisals, which are particular to the area of psychological injury and law. The paper discusses implications for practice and assessment.

  • Personality Disorder in Psychological Injury: A Biopsychosocial and Forensic Perspective

    Abstract:

    The present paper explores personality disorder from a biopsychosocial and developmental Perspective, in particular, while considering Forensic applications. It reviews criticisms of the current approach to classification, especially about its categorical in nature. Then, the paper focuses on the Five-Factor Model of personality dimensions and the attempts to relate it to understanding and assessing personality disorder (Costa and Widiger 2002 ). Developmental research is revealing that from early in life, temperament and personality seem to conform to a five-factor structure akin to the Big Five, although there are exceptions. Next, the paper examines the biopsychosocial model of personality and considers how personality disorder in the healthcare context affects treatment, relations with providers, and so on. Lastly, the paper examines Young’s (1997) stage model of development in relation to the Big Five and shows how the manner in which it deals with the development of the self may facilitate understanding of personality development and its disturbance. Recommendations and implications are considered.

Using a data set of 147,944 network names contextualized to a particular geographical area, we discuss the associated opportunities, challenges and limitations.

    The Integration of mouse dynamics in user authentication and authorization has gained wider research attention in the security domain, specifically for user identification. However, same cannot be said for user identification from the Forensic Perspective. As a step in this direction, this paper proposes a mouse behavioral dynamics visualization tool which can be used in a Forensic process. The developed tool was used to evaluate human behavioral consistency on several news-related web pages. The result presents promising research tendency which can be reliably applied as a user attribution mechanism in a digital Forensic readiness process.

    Two industrial sites were investigated based on years of available hydrogeologic information and monitoring data for soil and groundwater. Collected data were Forensically evaluated using age-dating and fingerprinting methods. The previous business uses of the project sites were as a gas station, laundry/dry-cleaning service, and car wash with petroleum underground storage tanks (USTs). As a result, these sites were exposed to a number of toxic contaminants at relatively high concentrations. Source control was necessary for successful remediation and the ultimate removal of the remaining compounds from these industrial sites. Although contaminated soil around the source was excavated during the remedial action and the high concentrations of contaminants were reduced, typical groundwater contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), and oxygenates including methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), diisopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ET...

    Two industrial sites were investigated based on years of available hydrogeologic information and monitoring data for soil and groundwater. Collected data were Forensically evaluated using age-dating and fingerprinting methods. The previous business uses of the project sites were as a gas station, laundry/dry-cleaning service, and car wash with petroleum underground storage tanks (USTs). As a result, these sites were exposed to a number of toxic contaminants at relatively high concentrations. Source control was necessary for successful remediation and the ultimate removal of the remaining compounds from these industrial sites. Although contaminated soil around the source was excavated during the remedial action and the high concentrations of contaminants were reduced, typical groundwater contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX), and oxygenates including methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), diisopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) were persistently found at the studied sites around the source points. The plume and concentration of contaminants had changed their shapes and strength for all monitoring periods. Thus, additional source control seems to be a requirement for the complete removal of source contamination, which must be ascertained with groundwater and soil monitoring on a regular time base. For the study sites, monitored natural attenuation was relatively feasible for the long-term plan; however, it did not offer a perfect remediation solution for an ultimate goal because of residual toxic compounds that might have affected the surrounding residential areas at higher concentrations than their health limits. Therefore, as a remediation strategy, the combination of clean-up technology and natural attenuation with monitoring activities are more highly recommended than either clean-up or natural attenuation used separately.
