    The number of people without rights of residence or work in the territory of Western Europe’s nation states is growing. In official representations of political life this group is commonly ‘symbolically eliminated’ or taken up by an increasingly hostile discourse on ‘illegal immigrants’ and ‘international terrorism’. This article explores what a rereading of the work of Hannah Arendt can contribute to the analytical task of giving an alternative meaning to the presence of this group. Arendt opens up new ways of thinking and acting in view of the present situation. She shows us the rightless migrant as subject to a very specific Form of Domination – total Domination. With Arendt we can see the migrant also as an emblematic philosophical figure, whose status exposes the contradiction of state-centred citizenship and the discourse of human rights. Lastly, the migrant comes into view as a potential political actor; protests by sans papiers become visible as sites of active citizenship.

    The philanthropic work of fundraising is characterized by an important relational dimension. The professionalization of the sector has led to the emergence of techniques to improve the effectiveness of fundraising. Among them is cultivation, which aims to establish a personal relationship with individual donors to engage them or to get them to give more. This article aims to analyze the philanthropic relationship between donor and recipient in the context of cultivation, to understand if this relationship is characterized by a Form of Domination. To do so, we will focus on a particular Form of philanthropy, that of American Friends groups of French cultural institutions (American Friends of the Louvre, American Friends of Versailles and so on). The American Friends are American organizations that benefit from 501(c)(3) status, which allows American patrons to make tax exempt gifts to foreign institutions. This analysis is based on qualitative research carried out in France and the United States and based on observations, interviews, and analysis of documents and archives.

  • The Critique of the Political Economy of Organization: A Contribution to the Analysis of the Organizational Social Formation

    Organization is neither a neutral nor an ambiguous social Form for the coordination of human co-operation. Rather, it is a historically specific Form of Domination. Moreover, Domination is not just the dark side of organizations, nor is it merely a derivative of a specific structural Form of organization (for example, the "bureaucratic" structure), but is ineluctably immanent to organization as a Form. In modern society, organizations are the essential aspect of Domination. We do not simply, nor even primarily, mean by this that every individual organization must be seen as an association for the exercise of Domination, but that a dominant "superstructure" is inserted into society via organizational regimes (for example, corporations, political parties, and health systems) so that organized structure becomes a phenomenon pervading the whole of society. A "critique of the political economy of organization"1 pursues, in its substance, two basic lines: (1) it inquires into the historicity of organized structure and (2) it examines its character as a Form of Domination. Methodologically, this critique continues the materialist tradition
