  • CICLing (1) - Universal Computational Formalisms and Developer Environment for Rule-Based NLP
Computational Linguistics and Intelligent Text Processing, 2018
    Co-Authors: Svetlana Sheremetyeva
    Abstract:

The paper explores the issues of universal computational formalisms and reusable developer environment as applied to rule-based NLP. It suggests a portable grammar framework and modular NLP architecture that by combining certain modules can be reused for different unilingual and multilingual applications through a universal developer environment. The developer environment includes a lexicon shell with flexible settings to define, among others, tag descriptions, entry structures, depth of knowledge, and a number of compilers with universal rule-writing formalisms. The formalisms and compilers described have been successfully used (in different combinations and with different depth of analysis) in a number of unilingual and multilingual applications that involved English, Danish, French and Russian.

  • a causal approach to nonmonotonic reasoning
    Artificial Intelligence, 2004
    Co-Authors: Alexander Bochman
    Abstract:

We introduce logical formalisms of production and causal inference relations based on input/output logics of Makinson and Van der Torre [J. Philos. Logic 29 (2000) 383-408]. These inference relations will be assigned, however, both standard semantics (giving interpretation to their rules), and natural nonmonotonic semantics based on the principle of explanation closure. The resulting nonmonotonic formalisms will be shown to provide a logical representation of abductive reasoning, and a complete characterization of causal nonmonotonic reasoning from McCain and Turner [Proc. AAAI-97, Providence, RI, 1997, pp. 460-465]. The results of the study suggest production and causal inference as general nonmonotonic formalisms providing an alternative representation for a significant part of nonmonotonic reasoning.

  • UNA LLAVE EN EAST LANSING (SONETO DE LUIS BORGES). UN MODELO DEL ANÁLISIS LINGÜÍSTICO DEL SONETO: UNA LLAVE EN EAST LANSING, DEL ESCRITOR ARGENTINO LUIS BORGES.
Universidad de Panamá. Dirección de Centros Regionales Universitarios, 2019
    Co-Authors: C., Euribiades Alvarado
    Abstract:

This study points out the importance of the Sonnet as a poetic genre. We will see the sonnet A Key in East Lansing by Jorge Luis Borges. We base our research on the various theories developed by the Russian Formalists on semantic theory. Concepts based on the use of language that postulate the existence of a literality, in the literary nature of the text.   We managed to state a pedagogical model of the aforementioned sonnet of Borges, from the linguistic point of view, based on the semiotic perspective, to interpret the aesthetic message from the semantic and pragmatic syntactic codes of the sonnet: a key in East Lansing, by Jorge Luis Borges. KEYWORDS:  The sonnet, its aesthetic codes, poetic discourse, language functions and poetic functionEste estudio señalaremos la importancia del Soneto como género poético.

  • the comparative linguistics of knowledge representation
International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 1995
Co-Authors: Goran Gogic, Christos H. Papadimitriou, Henry Kautz, Bart Selman
    Abstract:

We develop a methodology for comparing knowledge representation formalisms in terms of their "representational succinctness," that is, their ability to express knowledge situations relatively efficiently. We use this framework for comparing many important formalisms for knowledge base representation: propositional logic, default logic, circumscription, and model preference defaults; and, at a lower level, Horn formulas, characteristic models, decision trees, disjunctive normal form, and conjunctive normal form. We also show that adding new variables improves the effective expressibility of certain knowledge representation formalisms.

  • Coda: New Formalisms
    New Formalist Criticism, 2013
    Co-Authors: Fredric V. Bogel
    Abstract:

As noted in the Introduction, the label “New Formalism” in this study (like “New Formalist”) has no connection with the movement in American poetry of the same name — a movement Susan Wolf son tartly characterizes as “a Reagan-80s school of American poetry, with a formalist agenda that was reactionary, politically and poetically.”1 The possibility of mistakenly allying current formalist criticism with that poetic school is only one of Wolf son’s objections to the term. Like some other critics, she also hears in “New Formalism” the implication that attention to form had virtually disappeared from criticism until bravely resurrected by a few contemporary stalwarts. But in fact, as she notes, there have never not been literary students attentive to form, however marginalized they may have been — or been made to feel — by such phenomena as the rise of politically engaged, largely thematic critical writing, particularly during the 1980s and after. From this perspective, a label like “New Formalist” obliquely denigrates those who have been practicing formalism all along. Yet it is nonetheless the case that a number of modern critical trends or schools, quite different from one another, may arguably claim the label “formalist”: Russian Formalism, the art criticism of Roger Fry, the French tradition of explication de texte, New Criticism, Deconstruction, New Historicism (at times), and more.

  • New Formalist Interpretation
    New Formalist Criticism, 2013
    Co-Authors: Fredric V. Bogel
    Abstract:

The preceding chapters have tried to present, theorize, and argue for some of the contemporary critical practices known as New Formalist or New Formalism. They have also attempted to situate these practices in relation to formalist criticism of the twentieth century as it evolved from the essays of T. S. Eliot to the New Critics themselves, and in relation to some other theoretical and philosophical projects such as contemporary critical theory, Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms, and Gadamer’s “philosophical hermeneutics.” Except for the discussion of Keats’s “Bright Star” that closes Chapter 2, the textual analyses have been extremely brief and subordinated to one or another theoretical or methodological argument. The present chapter will try to present a more concrete and circumstantial case for New Formalist criticism by offering a variety of textual analyses, and by exploring — with examples — the place of close reading in New Formalism, in critical practices that do not claim to be formalist, and indeed in a variety of non-literary disciplines. In I. A. Richards’ quaint but still useful terminology, this chapter marks a transition from an emphasis on principles of literary criticism to an emphasis on practical criticism — criticism or interpretation in practice.
