    Abstract Gelidioid specimens from Singapore were analyzed using sequences of cox1 and rbcL to identify the species. Both datasets revealed the presence of four species: Gelidiella acerosa, Pterocladiella bartlettii, Pterocladiella caerulescens and Gelidium sentosaense sp. nov., described here. Gelidium sentosaense formed small tufts up to 1 cm high and occurred in monospecific patches on cement beds at the outlet of drainpipes at intertidal areas. A morphological investigation of fresh specimens collected from Singapore revealed that G. sentosaense was similar to Gelidium pusillum, which is limited to North Atlantic coasts. However, it was distinguished by longitudinal striations present on the surface of branches and rhizines scattered in the inner cortex and medulla. Phylogenetic analyses of rbcL and cox1 sequences revealed that G. sentosaense consistently formed a clade with Gelidium sp. from Oman and Gelidium pluma from Hawaii but it was distinct from previously described Gelidium species.

    Although the diverse uses of Gelidium as food and in the production of agar and paper pulp have increased research interest in this genus, the taxonomy and biogeography of several species of Gelidium remain largely unstudied. We conducted phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cox1 and plastid rbcL sequences of selected species of Gelidium. The data revealed that Gelidium allanii, Gelidium johnstonii, and Gelidium koshikianum, species that share a similar morphology, formed a monophyletic clade with a wide distribution around the Pacific rim. Because G. johnstonii Setchell & Gardner has nomenclatural priority over G. allanii V.J. Chapman and G. koshikianum Shimada et al., we synonymize the latter two species with the former. Based on the extremely low genetic divergences (0.0–0.2 % for rbcL and 0.0–0.4 % for cox1) between Korean and Mexican specimens of G. johnstonii and its sister relationship with Asian species, we consider that G. johnstonii may have been recently dispersed by anthropogenic agents. The New Zealand endemic Gelidium longipes and Gelidium crinale from Australia were compared with both rbcL and cox1, and were found to be identical. Although the transfer of G. logipes to G. crinale is necessary, the Australasian group within G. crinale is separated from other populations of the species, and we therefore recognize it as a subspecies. Biogeography of Gelidium on the basis of rbcL phylogeny of the 59 Gelidium species is briefly discussed.

    An examination of the type specimen of Gelidium zollingeri Sonder showed that it was incorrectly placed in Gelidium. To determine the appropriate taxonomic position, we undertook a detailed morphological examination of the holotype (National Herbarium of Victoria, Australia) as well as fresh materials collected from Sempu, the type locality, and a surrounding location Kondang Merak in Malang city, East Jawa, Indonesia. In our collections we found tetrasporangia and carposporophytes on female thalli. The vegetative and reproductive structures clearly placed it in the Halymeniales. Four sequences of rbcL and cox1, two each from Sempu and Kondang Merak, were identical. Our analysis of rbcL sequences showed that G. zollingeri formed a monophyletic clade with the two known Yonagunia species, Y. formosana and Y. tenuifolia.     Abstract:

    Gelidium is an economically and ecologically important agar-producing genus. Although the taxonomy of Gelidium has been the focus of many published studies, there is still a need to reevaluate species-level diversity. Herein, we describe Gelidium eucorneum sp. nov. based on specimens collected off Geojedo on the southern coast of Korea. G. eucorneum is distinguished by cartilaginous thalli with brush-like haptera, rhizoidal filaments concentrated in the medulla, and globose cytocarps that are horned with multiple determinate branchlets. The species occurs in wave-exposed intertidal sites, sometimes in association with other mat-forming algae. Phylogenetic analyses (rbcL, psaA, and cox1) reveal that G. eucorneum is unique and clearly distinct from other species of the genus. The clade containing Gelidium vagum and Acanthopeltis longiramulosa was resolved as a sister group to G. eucorneum. We suggest that the diverse morphologies of G. eucorneum, G. vagum, and Acanthopeltis developed from a common ancestor in East Asian waters. This study shows that even in well-studied areas, more agarophyte species are to be added to the world inventory of red algae.

    Abstract:

    Molecular surveys are leading to the discovery of many new cryptic species of marine algae. This is particularly true for red algal intertidal species, which exhibit a high degree of morphological convergence. DNA sequencing of recent collections of Gelidium along the coast of California, USA, identified two morphologically similar entities that differed in DNA sequence from existing species. To characterize the two new species of Gelidium and to determine their evolutionary relationships to other known taxa, phylogenomic, multigene analyses, and morphological observations were performed. Three complete mitogenomes and five plastid genomes were deciphered, including those from the new species candidates and the type materials of two closely related congeners. The mitogenomes contained 45 genes and had similar lengths (24,963-24,964 bp). The plastid genomes contained 232 genes and were roughly similar in size (175,499-177,099 bp). The organellar genomes showed a high level of gene synteny. The two Gelidium species are diminutive, turf-forming, and superficially resemble several long established species from the Pacific Ocean. The phylogenomic analysis, multigene phylogeny, and morphological evidence confirms the recognition and naming of two new species, describe herein as G. gabrielsonii and G. kathyanniae. On the basis of the monophyly of G. coulteri, G. gabrielsonii, G. galapagense, and G. kathyanniae, we suggest that this lineage likely evolved in California. Organellar genomes provide a powerful tool for discovering cryptic intertidal species and they continue to improve our understanding of the evolutionary biology of red algae and the systematics of the Gelidiales.

    Abstract Taxonomic confusion has been a significant problem with the small species of Gelidium because of their simple and variable morphology. In this study, specimens of two turf-forming species from southern China were studied on the basis of morphology and molecular data. Both data sets revealed the presence of two novel species in Gelidium: G. sanyaense sp. nov. and G. yangmeikengense sp. nov., described here. Gelidium sanyaense, forming sparse or dense turfs along the coast of southern China, was distinguished by the presence of compact brushlike haptera, a flattened and lanceolate axis, simple branches, and sparse medullary cells surrounded by rhizines. Gelidium yangmeikengense was characterized by a broad, stipelike axis that was constricted at the base, broadened in the middle and attenuated upward to become slender and cylindrical, and by sparsely pinnate branches on the upper portion of the axis.     AbstractThree endemic species of Gelidium have been described from the remote Tristan da Cunha archipelago. A recent barcode survey of Tristan da Cunha red algae in combination with the clarification of vouchers for previously sequenced specimens has prompted a molecular and morphological reassessment of these species. Analyses of rbcL and COI-5P data indicated that all sequenced Tristan da Cunha specimens represented a single taxon, and furthermore that this genetic group was conspecific with Gelidium micropterum from southern Africa. Morphologically the Tristan da Cunha specimens represented either Gelidium concinnum or Gelidium regulare, and there was a grade of character states between both of these species, as well as G. micropterum. Based on these results the synonymy of G. concinnum and G. regulare under G. micropterum is proposed and an expanded description of G. micropterum provided. None of the studied Tristan da Cunha specimens clearly fit the description of the third endemic species, Gelidium inflexum, and its status could not be determined.

    Two species of Gelidium, Gelidium usmanghanii and Gelidium pusillum var. pakistanicum are reported only from Pakistan, but their taxonomic status, phylogenetic relationships, and distributions have not been assessed with molecular data. Analysis of rbcL sequences revealed that G. usmanghanii was a distinct species with a distribution extending at least to the coast of Oman. This analysis also resolved G. pusillum var. pakistanicum within a Gelidium millariana species complex that was distantly related to G. pusillum. Further analyses of rbcL and COI-5P sequences showed that G. pusillum var. pakistanicum was a distinct species in this complex, and based on these molecular, and previous morphological results, this variety is elevated to the rank of species as Gelidium pakistanicum stat. nov.

    Detailed morphological and rbcL sequence analyses are presented for two species of Gelidium collected along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Although relatively well known in the tropical eastern Pacific, Gelidium sclerophyllum W. R. Taylor had previously been collected only once in Costa Rica. Four current G. sclerophyllum collections were found to have identical rbcL sequences and differed from a partial sequence for an isotype specimen at only one base pair. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that G. sclerophyllum and G. floridanum W. R. Taylor are geminate sister species. Development of the female reproductive system and cystocarps were observed to follow the usual patterns described for Gelidium species. Spermatangial development in G. sclerophyllum was also observed for the first time and revealed the cutting off of spermatia by transverse divisions as is characteristic of Gelidiales. The new species, Gelidium microglossum Grusz & Freshwater, was also collected and described. This is a small species with a prostrate habit, generally compressed axes of variable width, and clavate to obphyriform ultimate branches. Distinctive characteristics include spatulate tetrasporangial branchlets, medullary cells often forming a meshlike network, variably oriented rhizines, and an unusual attachment haptera structure. Phylogenetic analyses resolve G. microglossum within Gelidium, but placement within the genus remains uncertain.

    Fifteen species in seven genera of the marine benthic red algal order Gelidiales are reported from the New South Wales coast including Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. Critical sampling, a re-examination of herbarium specimens filed in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and the University of Melbourne, and molecular sequencing of most of the species has determined that many of the previous identifications from this region of the Pacific were incorrect. Gelidium pusillum (Stackhouse) Le Jolis, once widely reported from this coast, is shown not to occur here and the specimens on which these misidentifications were made have proved to represent either new species or previously described species. Similarly, records of Gelidium australe J. Agardh have been found to represent misidentification of the formerly New Zealand endemic Gelidium allanii V.J.Chapman, and specimens identified as Gelidium caulacantheum J. Agardh actually represent the new species Gelidium hommersandii sp. nov. Agardh, Pterocladiella caerulescens (Kutzing) Santelices & Hommersand [as Pterocladia caerulescens (Kutzing) Santelices], Pterocladiella capillacea (Gmelin) Santelices & Hommersand [as Pterocladia capillacea (Gmelin) Bornet], and Ptilophora pectinata (A. & E.S. Gepp) R.E.Norris. These species are described and illustrated in detail along with previously unreported reproductive structures. Three species are newly recorded for the New South Wales mainland [Parviphycus antipae Celan, Gelidium crinale (Turner) Gaillon, and Pterocladiella caloglossoides (Howe) Santelices], and two species (Gelidium isabelae W.R.Taylor and Gelidium allanii V.J.Chapman) represent new records for the Australian continent. In addition, three new species are described: Gelidium bernabei sp. nov., Gelidium declerckii sp. nov., and Gelidium hommersandii sp. nov.

    Abstract:

    A new species of the red algal genus Gelidium, G. omanense M.J. Wynne, is described from the Sultanate of Oman, northern Arabian Sea. This species is a very commonly occurring eulittoral seaweed on the Omani coast, essentially one of the dominant species during the summertime southwest monsoon on exposed rocky shores. Its distribution is from Dhofar (southern Oman) in the west to Masirah Island, Sharqia, in the east. It has been mis-identified as Suhria vittata (L.) J. Agardh wnow Gelidium vittatum (L.) Kutz.; cf. Tronchin et al. (2002)x. Recent ¨ studies of morphology and rbcL gene sequences, however, have demonstrated that this alga differs from other known species in Gelidium and should be recognized as a new species.
