    Abstract:

    Abstract Despite the fact that many nationalist movements have the interpretation and control of social space at their core, studies of nationalism have tended to ignore the cultural dimensions of land and territory. There are, however, moves towards a historically and culturally sensitive reading of the role of geography in nationalism. This paper applies such a reading to the ideology of Plaid Cymru, the Welsh Nationalist Party, in the interwar period. It begins by outlining the significance of the Geographical and cultural Imagination in Welsh politics and then traces the emergence of Geographical discourses of Welshness. The territorially rooted sense of national identity was threatened by the policies of the British state and this paper focuses on the Geographical discourses mobilized during campaigns of resistance to military land requisitioning. Territory was also important in the integrative sense of nation-building and this paper considers one such scheme—the construction of a North-South road to unite Wales. It ends by arguing for an imaginative reading of the nation.

    AbstractBased on the ‘case’ of educational reform in India, this paper explores the emergence of both new trans-national spaces of policy and new intra-national spaces of policy and how they are related together, and how policies move across and between these spaces and the relationships that enable and facilitate such movement. The paper is an attempt to think outside and beyond the framework of the nation state to make sense of what is going on inside the nation state. In particular, it takes seriously the need to rethink the frame within and scales at which the new policy actors, discourses, connections, agendas, resources, and solutions of governance are addressed – and the need to move beyond what Beck calls ‘methodological nationalism’ . In other words, the paper argues that thinking about the spaces of policy means extending the limits of our Geographical Imagination.     Abstract:

    Allan Pred writes compellingly about the reawakening of racism throughout Europe at the end of the twentieth century - even in Sweden, a country widely regarded as the very model of social justice and equality. Many thousands of non-European and Muslim immigrants and refugees who took advantage of Sweden's generous immigration policies now find themselves the object of discrimination and worse. Through the cascading juxtaposition of many voices, including his own, Pred describes the intensifying cultural racism of the 1990s, the proliferation of negative ethnic stereotypes, and the spatial segregation of the non-Swedish. He quotes the newspaper "Dagens Nyheter": "It is high time that Sweden reconsider its self-image as the stronghold of tolerance" (July 21, 1998), and analyzes the strategies that allow people to maintain that self-image. Perhaps the greatest strength of "Even in Sweden" is that Pred gives to the social consequences of global economic restructuring some very specific faces and places and a multitude of expressions of human will, both ill and good.

  • Somebody Else, Somewhere Else: Racisms, Racialized Spaces and the Popular Geographical Imagination in Sweden

    In conjunction with recurrent economic dislocations and the restructuring and melting of national capitalisms into one another, there has been a resurgence of racisms in Europe; even in Sweden, a country long stereotyped as an international champion of equality and economic and political justice. An array of concrete and racialized spaces has emerged and contributed to the further spread of racism. Deeply enmeshed in this process is a disjuncture between racist attitudes and behaviors, and a widely held image of the self and the nation as altruistic and just. Confronted by such internal dissonance, many, if not most, Swedes resolve matters through denial and projection: believing or asserting that the country's only racists are either skinhead youths or right-wing extremists, “somebody else.” The contradiction between the racisms and national identity is also commonly culturally reworked through projecting upon other locations as well as other groups. To demonstrate the complexities and internal contradictions of this popular Geographical Imagination, this paper provides a detailed depiction and critique of one of its elements—the municipality of Sjobo.
