Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimental dengan desain penelitian posttest only control design dengan 4 perlakuan dan 6 pengulangan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah sebanyak 30 kg buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan teknik observasi berdasarkan parameter organoleptic warna, tekstur dan rasa buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica) sera respon masyarakat terhadap tingkat kesukaan organoleptic rasa . Data diuji menggunakan statistik non parametrik Kruskal Wallis yang kemudian dilanjut uji Mann Whitney. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari pemberian daun gamal (Gliricidia sepium) terhadap kematangan buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). PEMBERIAN LARUTAN DAUN GAMAL (Gliricidia sepium) DALAM PROSES PEMATANGAN BUAH PISANG KEPOK KUNING (Musa paradisiaca formatypica) SEBAGAI MEDIA EDUKASI MASYARAKAT

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimental dengan desain penelitian posttest control group design dengan 4 perlakuan. Sampel pada penelitian ini adalah sebanyak 24 kg buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). Setiap perlakuan menggunakan 1 kg buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan teknik observasi terhadap pematangan buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). Pengamatan ini dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi warna, tekstur, dan rasa dari buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). Data diuji dengan statistik non parametrik Kruskal-Wallis kemudian dilanjutkan menggunakan Uji Mann-Whitney. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari berbagai konsentrasi larutan daun gamal (Gliricidia sepium) terhadap proses pematangan buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica). Kesimpulannya adalah (1) ada pengaruh pemberian pemberian larutan daun gamal (Gliricidia sepium) terhadap proses pematangan buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica) berdasarkan parameter organoleptis yaitu warna, tekstur dan rasa. Perlakuan yang paling efektif dalam mempengaruhi kematangan buah adalah pemberian larutan daun gamal dengan konsentrasi 50%; (2) kualitas rasa pada buah pisang kepok kuning (Musa paradisiaca formatypica) berdasarkan pemberian larutan daun gamal (Gliricidia sepium) memiliki citarasa yang manis sempurna; (3) bentuk media edukasi masyarakat yang dibuat dari hasil penelitian ini adalah brosur tentang pemanfaatan larutan daun gamal untuk proses pematangan buah pisang kepok (Musa paradisiaca formatypica) secara alami

Toxicity studies were conducted against larvae and pupae of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito, and LC 50 and LC 90 were calculated using probit analysis. Effect of the phytochemical on non target organisms was also tested using guppy fish. Results proved the nontoxicity of 8, 11, 14-eicosatrienoic acid on non-target aquatic organisms. These results could boost up amelioration of mosquito menace studies to a great extent

Effects of drought stress and arbuscular mycorrhiza on the growth of Gliricidia sepium (Jacq). Walp, and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. in simulated eroded soil conditions

OdunfaAbstract:A greenhouse investigation was conducted to determine the effect of arbuscular mycorrhiza and drought on the growth of two tropical hedgerow legume trees (Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala) under simulated eroded soil conditions. It was a factorial design with two levels of watering regime (adequate watering and drought), inoculation with Glomus deserticola (with and without), and two soil types (0–30 cm topsoil and 30–60 cm subsoil). Each treatment was replicated 3 times. After ten drought cycles, the growth of Gliricidia sepium in the subsoil was enhanced by mycorrhizal inoculation under both watering regimes whereas there was no significant contribution of mycorrhizal inoculation to the growth of L. leucocephala in both soil types under the two watering regimes. Drought stress significantly reduced most growth parameters for the two tree species in both soils with or without fungal inoculation. The N-fixing activity of Gliricidia sepium benefited from Glomus deserticola inoculation while that of L. leucocephala was not significantly affected in the topsoil. Mycorrhizal colonization was reduced for both tree species in the subsoil compared to the topsoil while it was significantly increased for both species in the subsoil when compared to the uninoculated subsoil counterpart. In the subsoil, inoculation of Gliricidia sepium with the mycorrhizal fungus increased root colonization by 89% and 73% under adequate watering and drought, respectively, whereas L. leucocephala had only a 38% and 42% increase in root colonization under comparative conditions in the subsoil. Thus Glomus deserticola inoculation may be beneficial to the growth of Gliricidia sepium in a badly eroded site where topsoil is missing.

Interactions among cutting frequency, reserve carbohydrates, and post-cutting biomass production in Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala

Latt, P K R Nair, B T KangAbstract:The ability of trees and shrubs to coppice vigorously after being cut or pruned is of great importance in the management of agroforestry systems. In a study conducted in the seasonally dry climate of Ibadan, Nigeria, frequent cutting progressively decreased concentrations of starch and total reserve carbohydrates in Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp. and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) De Wit. In frequently cut trees, starch was severely reduced in the stumps of both species. In contrast, soluble sugar concentrations in roots and stems of both species were consistently maintained at or above the levels in uncut control trees, suggesting that sugar levels were maintained through the hydrolysis of starch reserves. No starch replenishment occurred during the six weeks after cutting. In trees that were cut and then allowed to grow undisturbed during the wet season, replenishment of stem starch began within three months after cutting. Shoot regrowth after cutting decreased starch levels first in stems and, only after additional cuts, in roots. Dry-season cuts had little effect on reserve carbohydrates in G. sepium but quickly reduced stem starch in L. leucocephala . Frequent cutting decreased dry matter production, and this decrease was correlated with reduced levels of reserve carbohydrates.

Forest Ecology and Management, 1993Co-Authors: Thomas K Erdmann, P K R Nair, B T KangAbstract:Abstract This study examined the effects of cutting frequency and cutting height on reserve carbohydrates in Gliricidia sepium, a multipurpose woody perennial used widely in tropical agroforestry systems. Sample cores of major lateral roots and lower stems, taken from plant cut at 3- and 6-week intervals and from uncut (control) plants, as well as plants that were cut at 0, 25 and 100 cm above the ground, were analyzed for soluble sugars and starch using the perchloric acid method. Results indicate that G. sepium used stem starch to support initial coppice shoot growth after cutting and that this carbohydrate fraction was present in sufficient concentrations to preclude use of root reserve carbohydrates. Evidence obtained also supported the hypothesis that deciduous trees in the seasonally dry tropics accumulate reserve carbohydrates early in the dry season.

However, little information is available on the effects of the introduction of this species into regional agroecosystems. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the distance of Gliricidia sepium plants on the characteristics of maize crop, soil properties and microclimate conditions in the semi-arid region of Paraiba, Brazil. The study was conducted in the Esperanca County, Paraiba State, Brazil., where G. sepium trees were planted on a 0.5 ha field in 1996. The spacing used was 6 m between rows and 1 m between plants within the rows. In 2002, four 48 m2 plots were established within this field. Within each plot, three sampling positions were established: (1) under tree crowns in the rows (0 m); (2) 1 m apart from tree rows; and (3) 3 m apart from the tree rows. The experiment had a randomized block design with four replications. Litterfall dry matter amounted to 1.390 kg ha-1 under the trees and decreased to 270 kg ha-1 at a distance of 3 m from the trees. Soil P, K and light fraction of organic matter were significantly greater under the trees as compared to those between the tree rows. Soil and air monthly minimum temperature averages were not influenced by the distance from the trees. However, soil and air monthly maximum temperature averages were 6 and 2 °C lower under the trees, respectively. Soil moisture was significantly lower under the trees as compared to positions 1 and 3 m away from tree rows. Maize grain and straw yields as well as nutrient accumulation were higher under the trees and decreased with increasing the distance from the trees.

Entretanto, ha pouca informacao disponivel sobre o efeito da introducao dessa especie nos agroecossistemas da regiao. No presente estudo, objetivou-se avaliar a influencia da distância de plantas de Gliricidia sepium sobre caracteristicas da cultura do milho e do solo e microclima no Agreste Paraibano. O estudo foi realizado no municipio de Esperanca (PB), em area de 0,5 ha, onde, em 1996, foram plantadas fileiras de G. sepium espacadas 6 m entre si e com 1 m entre as arvores. Nesta area, em 2002, foram delimitadas quatro parcelas de 6 x 8 m e, em cada parcela, foi estabelecido um transeto perpendicular as fileiras de arvores com tres posicoes de amostragem: (1) nas fileiras de arvores (0 m); (2) a 1 m das fileiras de arvores, e (3) a 3 m de distância das fileiras de arvores. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com quatro repeticoes. A massa seca de folhedo caido embaixo da fileira de arvores foi de 1.390 kg ha-1 e diminuiu, gradativamente, para 270 kg ha-1 a 3 m de distância das arvores. As concentracoes de P, K e materia orgânica leve (MOL) embaixo das arvores foram maiores do que a 1 e 3 m de distância das fileiras. As medias mensais das temperaturas minimas do ar e do solo embaixo e a 3 m das arvores foram similares. Entretanto, as medias mensais das temperaturas maximas do solo e do ar foram de 6 e 2 °C mais altas a 3 m das arvores, respectivamente, ao longo do periodo de estudo. A umidade do solo foi significativamente menor embaixo das arvores do que a 1 e 3 m de distância. O milho produziu mais graos e palha e acumulou mais nutrientes nas posicoes mais proximas das fileiras de G. sepium.
