Os objetivos deste relato foram: avaliar o uso de um molde radioativo confeccionado para uso veterinário e sua eficácia no tratamento de um tumor de pele em cão. O método demonstrou ser eficaz no tratamento do tumor, mostrou ser uma prática segura para a equipe profissional envolvida, com baixos custos e resultado radiobiológico superior quando comparado com o tratamento padrão utilizado com outros elementos radioativos.This study showed a skin squamous cell carcinoma clinical case from 8-years-old female weimaranner, treated by Gold-198 foil brachytherapy. The aims were to evaluate special radioactive mould performed to be used on Veterinary practioners and, it's efficiency on one case of skin tumor treatment in dog. The method showed efficacy on the skin tumor treatment and radiological protection especially for the professional team involved, low cost and better radiobiological results when it was compared with standard treatment using others radioactive elements

Medical Physics, 2009Co-Authors: T Marques, M Schwarcke, Mirko Alvasanchez, Oswaldo Baffa, P NicolucciAbstract:Purpose: To simulate dose distributions around Gold‐198 nanoparticles using the Monte Carlo method and study the relation between nanoparticles concentration and dose homogeneity in a tissue. Method and Materials: 198 Au nanoparticles with 500 nm of radius immersed in a water phantom were simulated with PENELOPE Monte Carlo simulation code. The spatial resolution in the simulations wasset to 0.32 μm. Gold K‐edge decay (80.7 keV), L1‐edge decay (14.7 keV), L2‐edge decay (13.4 keV) and L3‐edge decay (12 keV) energies were simulated individually. A volumetric dose distribution around the Au particle was obtained and percentage depth dose curves and relative 2D and 3D maps were achieved. Using standards for large radiation field treatments, the region of 80% dose was found to define a dose penumbra region. The necessary distance between adjacent nanoparticles distributed in a tissue was studied to result in a homogeous distribution for each energy decay. Results: The percentage depth dose curve related to K‐edge energy showed a buid‐up region of 120 nm (reference to the center of the nanosphere) and 1% dose at a 3.5 cm from the source. To the L1‐edge, L2‐edge and L3‐edge energies the the 1% dose was found at 1.7 cm, 1.6 cm and 1.5 cm respectively. The distances between particles necessary to achieve dose homogeneity in water are 1.0 cm, 0.7 cm, 0.6 cm and 0.5 cm, respectively to K‐edge, L1‐edge, L2‐edge and L3‐edge. The nanoparticles concentration when the L1‐edge is used is 42% grater then when the K‐edge emission is used. The same relations calculated to L2 and L3 relative to the K‐edge are similar. Conclusions:Monte Carlo simulation is an accurate instrument to study dose distributions around nanoparticles and provides data to define a homogeneity criteria for treatments.

Only a few randomized trials evaluating adjuvant treatment for this disease have been published. Between 1970 and 1988 four consecutive randomized trials, including patients with ovarian borderline tumors, were conducted at the Norwegian Radium Hospital. After surgery, 253 stage I-II borderline tumors without residual disease were randomly allocated to these protocols. The adjuvant treatment in the four trials consisted of [1] external irradiation (Ext) combined with intraperitoneal instillation of radioactive Gold ( 198 Au) or Ext alone, [2] intraperitoneal radioactive therapy followed by thio-TEPA or no further treatment, [3] thio-TEPA or no adjuvant therapy, and [4] cisplatin or 32 P treatment. The patients were equally distributed according to prognostic variables within the eight randomization groups. The overall corrected and crude survival were 99 and 94%, respectively. In 83% of the patients a hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy was performed. None of the patients with less extensive surgery relapsed. Adjuvant therapy did not seem to improve the overall corrected survival. On the contrary, toxicity was added with small bowel complications after radiation therapy, neurotoxicity after cisplatin treatment, and bone morrow toxicity after thio-TEPA therapy. It is concluded that stage I borderline tumors should not receive any adjuvant treatment.

Methods Retrospective review of 51 patients treated with permanent Gold ( 198 Au) grain implant brachytherapy. The seed arrangement delivered a dose of 5500cGy at 0.5cm from a single plane. Primary endpoints were local recurrence and cosmetic outcome. Results Median follow-up was 27months. Median age was 69years. The majority (90%) were T1 lesions. None of the patients had evidence of regional lymph node or distant metastasis. Twelve patients had recurrent disease with prior surgery and five patients had previous head and neck radiation. Local control was achieved in 49 patients. Good cosmesis was achieved in 48 patients. Two-year actuarial estimates for local failure-free survival, disease-free survival and overall survival were 97.9%, 94.1% and 87.9%, respectively; no deaths were attributable to lip cancer. Conclusions Gold grain interstitial low-dose rate brachytherapy provides excellent local control and cosmesis in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lip. This technique provides an excellent option for patients that are elder or live remotely. It is particularly useful for lesions that are small, in previously radiated areas, or treated with prior surgery.
