  • active hollow four quadrant orientation detector array for application to pattern recognition
IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, 1995
    Co-Authors: Kangcheng Lin, Sichen Lee
    Abstract:

The active hollow F_O_ur Q_U_adrant O_rientation D_etector (active hollow FOQUOD) two dimensional 8/spl times/8 array using amorphous silicon material deposited on a silicon substrate has been fabricated successfully. This array can extract the contrast edges and the edge orientations of the test patterns with an accuracy within 7 degrees. Since the measured patterns are consistent with the expected results, part of the traditional data processing steps using software may be replaced by this Hardware Sensor array. A simpler algorithm for pattern recognition can then be developed. >

  • Active hollow four quadrant orientation detector array for applications to pattern recognition
International Electron Devices and Materials Symposium, 1
    Co-Authors: Kang-chang Lin, Sichen Lee
    Abstract:

The active hollow FOur QUadrant Orientation Detector (active hollow FOQUOD) two dimensional 8 ' 8 array using amorphous silicon material deposited on a silicon substrate has been fabricated successfully. This array can extract the contrast edges and the edge orientations of the test patterns and the pixel yield is close to 100 percent. Since the measured patterns are consistent with the expected results, part of the traditional data processing steps using software may be replaced by this Hardware Sensor array, a simpler algorithm than ever had for pattern recognition can then be developed.

  • Shall we use Hardware Sensor measurements or soft-Sensor estimates? Case study in a full-scale WWTP
    Environmental Modelling & Software, 2015
Co-Authors: Henri Haimi, Francesco Corona, Michela Mulas, Laura Sundell, Mari Heinonen, Riku Vahala
    Abstract:

An array of data derived soft-Sensors for estimating nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in the denitrifying post-filtration unit of a municipal wastewater treatment plant have been designed in our earlier work. The array was designed to back up the existing Hardware instrumentation in the process unit. The importance of trustworthy information on nitrate-nitrogen concentrations is emphasized by their employment in control loops enhancing nitrogen removal. In this paper, we propose an automatic system for deciding whether the use of estimates or corresponding Hardware measurements is preferable given the current condition in filters. The presented switching system is based on ranking the estimates and the measurements, and a preferability index that combines the assigned ranks. The ranking procedure employs a robust principal component analysis and statistics used as the measures of fit. The switching system was demonstrated to enable the employment of measurements and estimates in a complementary manner in operating the post-filtration unit. This study concerns data derived soft-Sensors and corresponding Hardware measurements. The soft-Sensors estimate nitrate concentration in the tertiary filters of a WWTP.A system for deciding whether to use estimates or Hardware measurements is proposed. The switching system is based on ranking the estimates and the measurements. The system allows the use of estimates and measurements in a complementary manner.

  • De-coupling for re-use in design and implementation using virtual Sensors
    Autonomous Robots, 1999
    Co-Authors: Nigel Hardy, Aftab Ahmad
    Abstract:

ViSIAr (Virtual Sensor Integration Architecture) is an idealized framework for building sensing subsystems of flexible assembly and other robotic systems. This paper considers how it supports the design and analysis phase, and might therefore support the exchange of software solutions to sensing problems, by clearly identifying the role and function of software components and de-coupling them from specific Hardware. Sensor usage models, specifications of what is to be sensed and the way in which it is sensed, are proposed as the principal objects suitable for design re-use and potentially for code re-use. Generally applicable classes of virtual Sensor control models (which form part of Sensor usage models) are presented.
