assessing the global conservation status of the rock rose Helianthemum caput felis

IUCN Red Lists assessments are an important starting point for conservation actions and the most commonly applied method for assessing the extinction risk of a species. In this study, the global conservation status of the rock rose Helianthemum caput-felis Boiss. (Cistaceae), a perennial Mediterranean plant, was evaluated using the Red List criteria. The distribution of the species was determined by monitoring historical localities and all other suitable sites along the western Mediterranean coasts for 6 years. For each confirmed locality, the ecological and population parameters and the main threats were recorded; these data were used in a quantitative analysis of the species' extinction risk. Our findings indicate there have been several recent extinctions, and there is a continuing decline in the species' area of occurrence, habitat quality and number of reproductive plants. The main threats are related to human activities. Extinction models indicate a probability of quasi-extinction risk of c. 30% in five generations or c. 45% in three generations, with the species likely to become extinct in seven currently known localities within the next 10 years. Application of the Red List criteria indicates H. caput-felis should be categorized as Endangered. This study confirms that legal protection and passive conservation measures are insufficient to guarantee the persistence of a plant species. Active conservation and management actions are needed to protect this and other threatened species of the Mediterranean Basin.

Phytotherapy Research, 2007Co-Authors: Fernando Calzada, Alma Delia AlanisAbstract:Bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanol extract of aerial parts from Helianthemum glomeratum afforded five antiprotozoal flavonol glycosides: tiliroside, kaempferol-3-O-(3″,6″di-O-E-p-coumaroyl)-βd-glucopyranoside, astragalin, quercitrin and isoquercitrin. The invitro antiprotozoal assay showed that tiliroside was the most potent antiamoebic and antigiardial compound with IC50 values of 17.5 µg/mL for Entamoeba histolytica and 17.4 µg/mL for G. lamblia. Isoquercitrin showed selectivity against E. histolytica (IC50 14.7 µg/mL) and quercitrin toward G. lamblia (IC50 24.3 µg/mL). All isolated compounds were less active than metronidazole and emetine, two antiprotozoal drugs used as positive controls. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2006Co-Authors: Fernando Calzada, Elizabeth Barbosa, Rafael CamposAbstract:The antigiardial activity of crude methanolic extracts from Helianthemum glomeratum and Rubus coriifolius, plants used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery, were demonstrated using experimental infections of Giardia lamblia in suckling female CD-1 mice. In vivo antigiardial activity was studied to determine the dose required to kill 50% of the trophozoites (ED50). Five single-doses between 1.25 and 20 mg extract/kg body weight were tested. Drugs metronidazole and emetine were used as reference. The ED50 (mg/kg) obtained for the extracts and drugs used as reference was 0.125 for Helianthemum glomeratum, 0.506 for Rubus coriifolius, 0.194 for metronidazole and 0.167 for emetine. Both methanolic extracts showed antigiardial activity, the extract of Helianthemum glomeratum was more active than Rubus coriifolius, and its activity is comparable to metronidazole and emetine. Our results hold the perspective for the utilization of the extracts of these plants as an option to develop of novel antigiardial phytodrugs.

The flavan-3-ols, (-)-epigallocatechin and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, isolated from Helianthemum glomeratum roots were tested for their antiamoebic and antigiardial effects in vitro. Compared with the activity determined with the leaf and the root methanol extracts, the effect of (-)-epigallocatechin against Entamoeba histolytica was of a similar potency, nevertheless, it also suppressed the growth of Giardia lamblia in axenic cultures, a parasite that proved to be resistant to the crude extracts. It might be assumed that determined biological properties are due to the presence of (-)-epigallocatechin in the plant, although the flavonoids, kaempferol and tiliroside isolated from the leaves, could account for the antiprotozoal properties of this herbal resource, used in Mayan traditional medicine for the treatment of bloody diarrhoea.

A possible mechanism to counteract infectious diarrhoea would be by inhibiting the growth of the enteropathogen causing the disease. The aim of this work was to study the antimicrobial activity of H. glomeratum against bacterial enteropathogens isolated from faeces of children with acute diarrhoea or dysentery. A methanol extract obtained from the leaves and stems was highly active against Shigella spp and Vibrio cholerae; activity against Salmonella spp and Escherichia coli isolates was also present. Acetone/water extract from the roots was also highly active against Shigella and Vibrio isolates. Further chemical fractionation indicated that antibacterial activity was associated with the polyphenolic fraction. Shigella spp causes severe dysentery in children and Vibrio cholerae causes severe watery diarrhoea. Antidiarrhoeal activity of H. glomeratum may be due, at least in part, to the antimicrobial activity of polyphenolics against bacterial enteropathogens commonly associated with the disease. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

As a consequence of this leap, a new photoautotrophic Helianthemum micropropagation system has been developed. This system reduces the time needed to obtain mycorrhizal plants to 3 months since fungal inoculation is carried out at the moment plants are transferred from in vitro to ex vitro conditions, so that plant acclimatization and mycorrhization occur at the same time.

Morphological characterization of the mycorrhiza formed by Helianthemum almeriense Pau with Terfezia claveryi Chatin and Picoa lefebvrei (Pat.) Maire

Morte, Mario HonrubiaAbstract:This work presents the first anatomical description of the mycorrhizal systems of Helianthemum almeriense, and of the structure and ultrastructure of the mycorrhizae formed by this plant species with the ascomycetes Terfezia claveryi and Picoa lefebvrei . Four different mycorrhizal systems are described, the club-shaped mycorrhiza being the most abundant. The type of mycorrhiza formed depended on the mycorrhiza culture conditions, but not on the fungal species. For both fungal species, H. almeriense formed an endomycorrhiza in natural field conditions, an ecto- and ectendomycorrhiza without a sheath in pot cultures, and an ectomycorrhiza with a characteristic sheath and Hartig net in in vitro cultures. This is the first report of a typical sheath in Helianthemum -desert truffle mycorrhizal associations. The results support the idea that culture conditions can induce changes in mycorrhiza morphology and that there is no clear barrier between the two main types of mycorrhiza organization in Helianthemum species. The ultrastructural study confirmed the regular presence of T. claveryi intracellular hyphae in direct contact with the host wall, a localization which seems to be a characteristic of the T. claveryi mycorrhiza organization. The P. lefebvrei mycorrhiza organization was characterized by intracellular hyphae with large amounts of electron-dense globules, probably with a lipidic content, and a warty ornamentation on the wall of the root external hyphae.
