At the request of the President of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology, Dr Owen Slocombe, I have been asked to reflect on seminal research achievements during that period with emphasis where appropriate to my own work. By way of a preamble I will start by describing how I came into veterinary parasitology. As a young veterinarian I had joined the British Colonial Service in 1953 and was posted to the Veterinary Research Station at Vom, Nigeria. Although my remit was to work in the general area of animal production I soon recognised that apart from major scourges such as rinderpest, the biggest problems affecting animal production were parasitic infections and nutrition and the interaction between these. A vacancy occurred in the Parasitology Division of the Department of Animal Production and I joined the team led by Professor Rob Lee and Dr John Ross, both of whom are distinguished veterinary helminthologists; they were my mentors and my friends. Our laboratory concentrated on Helminthology while another on the same station dealt with entomology and blood protozoa. I now propose to provide a personal view of research in veterinary Helminthology over the past four decades, i.e. 1954-1993.

CoxAbstract:Robert Leiper is best known for his discoveries in the fields of Guinea worm and schistosomiasis, but he also made major contributions to parasitology during his career as helminthologist and later Professor of Helminthology at the London School of (Hygiene and) Tropical Medicine. He was particularly involved in establishing the London School's Winches Farm Field Station and stimulating the research carried out there, work that has made a number of important contributions to our understanding of parasites. Leiper founded the Commonwealth Bureau of Agricultural Parasitology and was also instrumental in initiating, and editing, the Journal of Helminthology, Helminthological Abstracts and establishing, indirectly, Protozoological Abstracts.

100 Questions in livestock Helminthology research

HodgkinsonAbstract:An elicitation exercise was conducted to collect and identify pressing questions concerning the study of helminths in livestock, to help guide research priorities. Questions were invited from the research community in an inclusive way. Of 385 questions submitted, 100 were chosen by online vote, with priority given to open questions in important areas that are specific enough to permit investigation within a focused project or programme of research. The final list of questions was divided into ten themes. We present the questions and set them briefly in the context of the current state of knowledge. Although subjective, the results provide a snapshot of current concerns and perceived priorities in the field of livestock Helminthology, and we hope that they will stimulate ongoing or new research efforts.

Use of a multiple choice questionnaire to assess UK prescribing channels’ knowledge of Helminthology and best practice surrounding anthelmintic use in livestock and horses

MatthewsAbstract:Grazing livestock and equines are at risk of infection from a variety of helminths, for which the primary method of control has long been the use of anthelmintics. Anthelmintic resistance is now widespread in a number of helminth species across the globe so it is imperative that best practice control principles be adopted to delay the further spread of resistance. It is the responsibility of all who prescribe anthelmintics (in the UK, this being veterinarians, suitably qualified persons (SQPs) and pharmacists) to provide adequate information on best practice approaches to parasite control at the point of purchase. Poor uptake of best practice guidelines at farm level has been documented; this could be due to a lack of, or inappropriate, advice at the point of anthelmintics purchase. Therefore, the aim here was to evaluate levels of basic knowledge of Helminthology, best practice guidelines and dispensing legislation among veterinarians and SQPs in the UK, through a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) test, that was distributed online via targeted emails and social media sites. For each respondent, the percentage correct was determined (for the MCQ test overall and for subsections) and the results analysed initially using parametric and non-parametric statistics to compare differences between prescribing channels. The results showed that channels generally performed well; veterinarians achieved a mean total percentage correct of 79.7% (range 34.0-100%) and SQPs, a mean total percentage correct of 75.8% (range 38.5-100%) (p = 0.051). The analysis indicated that veterinarians performed better in terms of knowledge of basic Helminthology (p = 0.001), whilst the SQP group performed better on legislation type questions (p = 0.032). There was no significant difference in knowledge levels of best practice between the two channels. Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that veterinarians and those answering equine questions only performed significantly better than those answering all questions. Based on information gaps identified by analysis of individual questions, a number of areas for improvement in knowledge transfer to both channels are suggested to improve the quality of advice at the point of anthelmintics purchase.

Ten years of research activities on tropical parasitology of dromedaries, cattle, and small ruminants in Mauritania.

DialloAbstract:: In the past, the essential part of the activity of the parasitology laboratory of the Centre National d'Elevage et de Recherches Veterinaires (CNERV) was represented by diagnostic work that enabled the construction of an inventory of local parasitic fauna and a good collection of specimens. However, the small and irregular number of samples each year, led us to switch our activities in 1990 toward work that could better justify the existence of CNERV. We started work on applied research topics, such as tick-borne diseases, Helminthology (nemathelminths and plathelminths), and trypanosomosis. These results were valorized through scientific publication and communication at international meetings. The most valuable information was conveyed to herders.

Workshops propose National Programme for Veterinary Helminthology for South Africa : information

Van Der MerweAbstract:A workshop was held at Onderstepoort on 2-3 July 1999 to set priorities in veterinary Helminthology for South Africa. Representatives from 19 organisations attended. The workshop achieved 2 of its 3 aims, namely to identify the priority areas within the field and to set specific objectives to be achieved in addressing these needs. Seven strategies were proposed, namely, motivation, education, therapeutic, wormresistance, animal tolerance, biological control and diagnostic strategies. Afollow-up session took place on 8 September 1999 and at this workshop and in subsequent meetings, preliminary action plans were developed for these strategies. It was felt that the proposed activities delineated by this process should formthe basis for a National Programme for Veterinary Helminthology and a national forum is to be convened to encourage all stakeholders to consider, discuss and adopt these activities. The forum is scheduled to take place in April 2000.

The 7 strategies proposed are: motivation, education, therapeutic, worm resistance, animal tolerance, biological control and diagnostic strategies. A follow-up session is being planned to formulate action plans for each sphere.
