    Abstract:

    The mitochondrial genome is a significant tool for investigating the evolutionary history of metazoan animals. The currently available mitochondrial genome data in GenBank is limited to understand the detail evolutionary relationship among the metazoan animals, especially in the phylum Annelida. Here we present the mitochondrial gene organization, gene order and codon usage of the leech Whitmania pigra (Annelida), which is the first representative from the class Hirudinea. It is a circular molecule of 14,426 bp, and encodes 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. All 37 genes of W. pigra mitochondrial genome are transcribed from the same strand, which is identical to studied annelids, two echiurans, two sipunculans and many other lophotrochozoans. Five conserved gene clusters can be found in mitochondrial genomes of nine studied annelids, including (1) cox1-N-cox2; (2) cox3-Q-nad6-cob-W-atp6; (3) H-nad5-F-E-P-T-nad4L-nad4; (4) srRNA-V-IrRNA; and (5) nad3-S(1)-nad2. Compared with that of other studied annelids, translocations of transfer RNAs were found in the gene arrangement of W. pigra mitochondrial genome. Phylogenetic analysis strongly support that the species from Hirudinina and Oligochaeta form a monophyletic group Clitellata (BPM = 100, BPP = 100), which is consistent with previous research based on morphological and other molecular data. Both gene order data and amino acid sequences reveal that echiurans are derived annelids and sipunculans should be clustered with annelids and echiurans. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the component communities of parasites in Chaetobranchus flavescens from a tributary of the Amazon River system, northern Brazil. Out of 39 fish examined, 1,124,710 parasites were collected, such as Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, Piscinoodinium pillulare (Protozoa), Gussevia spilocirra, Gussevia elephus (Monogenea), metacercariae of Clinostomum marginatum and Posthodiplostomum sp. (Digenea), Pseudoproleptus sp. larvae. (Nematoda), Echinorhynchus paranensis, Gorytocephalus spectabilis (Acanthocephala), Braga patagonica (Isopoda) and leeches Glossiphonidae (Hirudinea). However, I. multifiliis was the dominant and abundant species, while B. patagonica and Hirudinea gen. sp. were the least prevalent and abundant parasites. These parasites had an aggregate dispersion, with mean richness of 4.7 ± 1.5 per fish, Brillouin diversity of 0.32 ± 0.29 and evenness of 0.15 ± 0.13. No correlation between the length and the parasite species richness and the Brillouin diversity was found, as well as regarding host size and abundance of parasites. Body condition of the hosts was not affected by the moderate parasitism. The low diversity of endoparasites indicates that C. flavescens is a host with low position in the food web.     The aim of this study was to investigate the parasites fauna of Ancistrus leucostictus, Hypostomus ventromaculatus, Ancistrus sp. and Hemiancistrus sp. from the Igarapé Fortaleza River (Amapá State, Brazil), besides making a checklist of the parasite species in Loricariidae from Brazil. A total of 53 fishes were collected from November 2013 to August 2014. In the hosts, a total of 1,559 parasites of seven taxa were collected: Unilatus unilatus, Trinigyrus mourei, undetermined metacercariae, Genarchella gernachella, Raphidascaris (Sprentascaris) sp., Gorythocephalus elongorchis and Proteocephalus sp. Ectoparasite species were frequent in the examined Loricariidae species, which also had larval stages of endoparasites. The hosts with the highest sampled number, H. ventromaculatus and Ancistrus sp., had the highest parasite species richness. Loricariidae species from Brazil are parasitized by species of Protozoa, Monogenea, Nematoda, Digenea, Acantocephala, Cestoda, Crustacea and Hirudinea, but monogeneans, digeneans and nematodes were the predominant taxa.bitstream/item/186730/1/CPAF-AP-2018-Parasites-in-Loricariidae.pd

In P. braueri, 630 parasites were collected, belonging to Unilatus unilatus, Nothogyrodactylus sp., Genarchella genarchella, Proteocephalus sp., Gorytocephalus elongorchis, Dolops longicauda and Hirudinea gen. sp., with a dominance of monogenean species. In P. pardalis, 120 parasites were collected, belonging to U. unilatus, Acanthostomum gnerii and Gorytocephalus elongorchis, and this acanthocephalan was the dominant species. In both hosts, the parasites presented clumped distribution, high prevalence, low abundance, low Shannon diversity, and low species richness, with a predominance of helminth species. In P. braueri, host length was positively correlated with parasite species richness and Shannon index. There was no difference in the body condition of parasitized and non-parasitized fishes in either host. This was the first report of these parasites in P. braueri and P. pardalis.201

    Abstract:

    Based on the published data, approximately 90 stygobiotic species are known from aquatic subterranean environment of the Lake Skadar Basin. Crustacea are the most diverse faunistic group with 54 species, followed by Gastropoda and Acari with 22 and 12 species, respectively. Turbellaria are represented by two species, while Annelida are represented by one Hirudinea species. The highest number of stygobionts was stated for cave Obodska pecina. The largest number of stygobiotic species has been reported from cave waters, followed by springs and interstitial waters, while a lower number was found in wells. Crustacean Copepoda and Amphipoda are the most diverse in cave waters, while Hydrachnidia is the most diverse group in interstitial waters.

    Abstract:

    Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including important synonyms) of all living European land and freshwater animals, their geographical distribution at country level (up to the Urals, excluding the Caucasus region), and some additional information. The Fauna Europaea project covers about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. This represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many users in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. Hirudinea is a fairly small group of Annelida, with about 680 described species, most of which live in freshwater habitats, but several species are (sub)terrestrial or marine. In the Fauna Europaea database the taxon is represented by 87 species in 6 families. Two closely related groups, currently treated as distinct lineages within the Annelida, are the Acanthobdellea (2 species worldwide, of which 1 in Europe) and the Branchiobdellea (about 140 species worldwide, of which 10 in Europe). This paper includes a complete list of European taxa belonging to the Hirudinea, Acanthobdellea and Branchiobdellea. Recent research on a limited number of taxa suggests that our current appreciation of species diversity of Hirudinea in Europe is still provisional: on the one hand, cryptic, unrecognised taxa are expected to emerge; on the other, the status of some taxa currently treated as distinct species deserves revisiting.

    Abstract:

    Leeches (Hirudinea) constitute a relatively small monophyletic group of highly specialized annelids, but may play important roles as invertebrate predators in freshwater, while others are infamous for their ectoparasitic bloodsucking. About 15% of the 680 described species are marine and slightly less have switched to terrestrial life; the rest are freshwater, divided among 91 genera. They are globally distributed on all continents except Antarctica, reaching the highest diversity in the Holarctic region with one-half of all continental species. Known areas of local endemism are the ancient Siberian lake Bajkal and lake Ohrid (about 10 species each) on the Balkan Peninsula, which is an endemicity area in itself. A small number of sanguivorous species known as “medicinal leeches” have played an important role in traditional and modern medicine, most noticeably four Hirudo spp. from the Western Palearctic.

    Abstract:

    Croatobranchus mestrovi is a troglobitic leech from deep shaft-like caves in the Velebit Mountain, Dinaric karst, Croatia, living in cold (4–6 °C) water. Its oral sucker extends to form four pairs of triangular tentacles, each with about five finger-like papillae, but widening into a marginally crenulated disc when attached to a substrate. Pairs of stiff, finger-like lateral projections, probably gills, occur along the body behind the clitellum. Somites are simple five-annulate. Despite the unique head morphology and the presence of lateral outgrowths, the anatomy and 18S rRNA gene sequence of this species indicate that it is a member of the Erpobdellidae, closely related to Dina.

    AbstractContent of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20∶5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22∶6n-3) and the n-3/n-6 ratio are important indicators of nutritive value of aquatic invertebrates as food for fish. We studied fatty acid (FA) content and composition of 68 zoobenthic species. Benthic invertebrates differed significantly in their contents of EPA and DHA and n-3/n-6 ratios. The most valuable food for fish were Insecta, especially Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, Gammaridae, and Turbellaria (Dendrocaelopsis sp.). The invertebrates of low food quality for fish were Hirudinea, Mollusca, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa (Plumatella emarginata), and Coleoptera (Dytiscus lapponicus). Our data suggest that the recent and ongoing global replacement of native species, mainly Insecta, by invaders, mostly represented by Mollusca, Crustacea, Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa, and Hirudinea, probably will reduce the nutritive value of food sources for benthivorous fish.     The present paper summarizes data on parasites of ruff from all its area, based on published reviewed journals, scientific reports, conference contributions, PhD theses. The checklist includes all protozoan and metazoan parasites of the ruff from freshwater and brackish habitats. Parasites are arranged according to class and listed alphabetically. A total of 211 parasite species ⁄ taxa were recorded on ruff (4 Kinetoplastomonada, 2 Coccidiomorpha, 4 Microsporidea, 18 Myxosporidia, 32 Ciliophora, 14 Monogenea, 21 Cestoda, 53 Digenea, 30 Nematoda, 12 Acanthocephala, 3 Hirudinea, 6 Mollusca, 7 Copepoda, 3 Branchiura and 1 Acariformes). Most are digenean trematodes, 33 of them being metacercariae. Second largest group are Nematoda, with 18 species in larval stages.

    The parasite fauna of the burbot (Lota lota) within its natural range is reviewed. The sent paper summarizes the data on parasites of the burbot from water bodies of Eurasia and North America, based on published monographs, reviewed journals, scientific reports, conference contributions, and PhD theses. The checklist includes all protozoan and metazoan parasites of the burbot. A total of 242 parasite species/taxa were recorded in the burbot (Ki-netoplastomonada--4, Parasitomonada--3, Coccidiomorpha--1. Microsporidea--3, Myxosporidia--35, Pleurostomata--1. Cyrtostomata--3, Peritricha--20. Protozoa incertae sedis--1. Monogenea--8, Cestoda--23, Digenea--50. Nematoda--36, Acanthocephala--28, Hirudinea--11. Bivalvia--5, Crustacea--10). Most parasites belong to digenean trematodes. Most of these species (183 species/taxa) were recorded on Eurasian and only 92--in North America fishes. Several parasite species recorded from the burbot are discussed in relation to host specificity and their geographical distribution.
