  • Biculturalism and Perceived Competence of Latino Immigrant Adolescents
American Journal of Community Psychology, 1998
    Co-Authors: Dina Birman
    Abstract:

The present study investigated acculturation to the Hispanic and American Cultures and self-perceptions of competence among 123 Latino immigrant adolescents. The study tested a contextual model of biculturalism by examining whether different acculturation styles predicted perceived competence in life spheres with different cultural demands. Perceived competence was assessed using Harter's (1988) Self-Perceptions of Competence Profile for Adolescents for the life spheres of school, peers (both Latino and non-Latino), and global self-worth. In addition, an analogous scale to assess perceptions of competence in the family was constructed for that sphere. The study found some support for a contextual model of acculturation. Acculturation to American Culture predicted positive self-perceptions of competence with American peers, while acculturation to Hispanic Culture predicted positive self-perceptions of competence with Latino peers. Perceived family competence, however, was predicted by acculturation to American rather than Hispanic Culture. Results with respect to biculturalism are tentative, with a trend relating biculturalism to positive self-perceptions of global self-worth. However, because many of the conditions stipulated by the model were not met, results with respect to biculturalism raise questions about current approaches to operationalizing the construct.

  • Literatura por tareas y gamificación: novela policíaca y geografías culturales / Task-based approach and gamification applied to Literature: crime fiction and cultural mapping
'Universidad de Extremadura - Servicio de Publicaciones', 2019
Co-Authors: Nuñez Sabarís Xaquín, Cea Álvarez Ana, Silva Dias Ana
    Abstract:

This paper explores the possibilities of the literary text as an effective instrument to increase communicative and cultural competence through a proposal of a didactic unit which was built on two didactic perspectives: a task-based approach and gamification proceedings. The target group would be composed of Spanish as a Foreign Language  (SFL) students, who belong to the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (2001). This didactic unit is based on the crime fiction entitled La playa de los ahogados (2009), which was written  by Domingo Villar originally in Galician language (A praia dos afogados). Later on, in 2015 it was adapted to the cinema. This fact allows us to introduce the transmedia dimension (text and audiovisual) into the project narrative. Along this paper geographical aspects of literature will be unveiled, all of which would result in an effective instrument to deepen into the diversity of the Hispanic Culture. The suspense elements (reached out through different resources such as the creation of real scenarios -Vigo and its surroundings-, a crime, a detective and some suspects), encourage reading through exploratory tasks, whose final aim is to stimulate student´s imagination and creative writing abilities. Abstract This article explores the possibilities of the literary text as an effective instrument to increase communicative and cultural competence through a proposal of a didactic unit which was built on two didactic perspectives: a task-based approach and gamification proceedings. • alcohol use severity and depressive symptoms among late adolescent Hispanics testing associations of acculturation and enculturation in a bicultural transaction model
    Addictive Behaviors, 2015
Co-Authors: Miguel Ángel Cano, Lizette Ojeda, Brandy Pinawatson, Linda G Castillo, Marcel A De Dios, Yessenia Castro, Ellen L Vaughan, Elma I Lorenzoblanco, Jodi Berger Cardoso, Rick A Cruz
    Abstract:

Research has indicated that Hispanics have high rates of heavy drinking and depressive symptoms during late adolescence. The purpose of this study was to test a bicultural transaction model composed of two enthnocultural orientations (acculturation and enculturation); and stressful cultural transactions with both the U.S. Culture (perceived ethnic discrimination) and Hispanic Culture (perceived intragroup marginalization) to predict alcohol use severity and depressive symptoms among a sample of 129 (men=39, women=90) late adolescent Hispanics (ages 18-21) enrolled in college. Results from a path analysis indicated that the model accounted for 18.2% of the variance in alcohol use severity and 24.3% of the variance in depressive symptoms. None of the acculturation or enculturation domains had statistically significant direct effects with alcohol use severity or depressive symptoms. However, higher reports of ethnic discrimination were associated with higher reports of alcohol use severity and depressive symptoms. Similarly, higher reports of intragroup marginalization were associated with higher depressive symptoms. Further, both ethnic discrimination and intragroup marginalization functioned as mediators of multiple domains of acculturation and enculturation. These findings highlight the need to consider the indirect effects of enthnocultural orientations in relation to health-related outcomes.

  • testing the parent adolescent acculturation discrepancy hypothesis a five wave longitudinal study
Journal of Research on Adolescence, 2016
Co-Authors: Seth J Schwartz, Sabrina Des E Rosiers, Shi Huang, Byron L Zamboanga, Jennifer B Unger, Elma I Lorenzoblanco, Lourdes Baezcondegarbanati, David Cordova, Daniel W Soto, Karina M Lizzi
    Abstract:

This 2½-year, 5-wave longitudinal study tests the hypothesis that acculturation discrepancies between Hispanic immigrant parents and adolescents would lead to compromised family functioning, which would then lead to problematic adolescent outcomes. Recent-immigrant Hispanic parent-adolescent dyads (N = 302) completed measures of acculturation and family functioning. Adolescents completed measures of positive youth development, depressive symptoms, problem behavior, and substance use. Results indicated that Time 1 discrepancies in Hispanic-Culture retention, and linear trajectories in some of these discrepancies, negatively predicted adolescent positive youth development, and positively predicted adolescent depressive symptoms and binge drinking, indirectly through adolescent-reported family functioning. The vast majority of effects were mediated rather than direct, supporting the acculturation discrepancy hypothesis. Implications for further research and intervention are discussed.
