    Fire frequency affects vegetation composition and successional pathways; thus it is essential to understand fire regimes in order to manage natural resources at broad spatial scales. Fire History Data are lacking for many regions for which fire management decisions are being made, so models are needed to estimate past fire frequency where local Data are not yet available. We developed multiple regression models and tree-based (classification and regression tree, or CART) models to predict fire return intervals across the interior Columbia River basin at 1-km resolution, using georeferenced fire History, potential vegetation, cover type, and precipitation Databases. The models combined semiqualitative methods and rigorous statistics. The fire History Data are of uneven quality; some estimates are based on only one tree, and many are not cross-dated.     Abstract:

    Previous studies in Information Retrieval literature have shown that users’ search History can be leveraged to improve current search results. However sometimes we have little to no search History available. In such cases, it would be helpful to obtain Data similar to search History Data. One way of doing this is by simulating previous search interactions. In the present study, we focus on generating simulated “related queries” that can serve as an additional source of information about the current search [1]. Assuming that users reformulate their queries by leveraging some of the terms and key phrases they find in ranked documents during their search, we proposed simple models for generating such related queries.

    Abstract:

    In this paper a new method is described for estimating the fire interval distribution of a region using spatial-temporal fire History Data. In Los Angeles County, California, detailed information on fires has been available through the use of geographic information systems (GIS) technology. The proposed estimator is applied to GIS Data covering the years 1878-1996 and it is shown that fuel age appears to have a nonlinear threshold-type relationship with burn area. The estimator is shown to be more stable than previous estimators and to have good finite and large sample properties.
