  • The role of Homo Oeconomicus in the political economy of James Buchanan
    Constitutional Political Economy, 2014
    Co-Authors: Gebhard Kirchgässner
    Abstract:

Whenever the economic model of behavior is to be applied, the utility function has—at least somewhat—to be specified. Buchanan generally prefers to apply a rather narrow version. However, he acknowledges that it is hardly possible to explain actual behavior of individuals with such a version, so in performing empirical economic research he accepts that we have to use a more open one. He also acknowledges that people might behave differently in markets than they do in politics; other-regarding behavior might be more pronounced in politics as compared to markets. Which version should be applied in constitutional economics, however, is a different question. Following a long ongoing tradition in political philosophy, he insists that—for methodological reasons—the narrow version is the correct one to be applied; this is the way to compare different sets of rules when analyzing the possible abuse of power by rulers in order to prevent it as far as possible. The same should also be taken into account when analyzing the process of policy advice. The narrow Homo Oeconomicus model should, however, not be misunderstood as a normative prescription.

  • the invention of Homo Oeconomicus a reading of john stuart mill s on the definition of political economy
    Prose Studies, 1998
    Co-Authors: Charles H. Hinnant
    Abstract:

This essay argues that the modern humanist critique of Homo Oeconomicus, far from originating outside the field of political economy, as is commonly assumed, actually appeared first within the precincts of existing economic usages and doctrines. Through an examination of John Stuart Mill's seminal early essay, “On the Definition of Political Economy,” it seeks to show how the initial conceptualization of Homo Oeconomicus and its critique emerged simultaneously out of the same methodology that produced the transition from the classical political economy of Smith and Ricardo to the neoclassical economics of Jevons, Walras, and Menger.

  • Paradigms and Conceptual Metamorphoses in the Relation Homo Oeconomicus vs. Homo Academicus
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2013
Co-Authors: Constantin I. Hălăngescu, Ion Pohoaţă
    Abstract:

Abstract The subject of this paper aims to present in a “sui generis” manner a point of view on the relationship between two models of the social-human typology: Homo Oeconomicus and Homo Academicus. Reviewing some of the most approved views on theoretical and conceptual aspects, the limits of the two human types presented are not exhaustive, but is a starting point that can answer to questions like: “How far can go the convergence between academics and economics?”, “There are constraints or favorite elements in the relationship between Homo Oeconomicus and Homo Academicus?” Study approach, developed by the hypothesis (“Education fuels economy and shaping the society”) to the conclusion (Homo Academicus is deeply involved in Mundus Oeconomicus, while Homo Oeconomicus stimulates a comprehensive way across Mundus Academicus), generate different approaches of paradigms and metamorphosis of the two human types analyzed, leading inevitably to shape postulate that humanity cannot ignore the “Development through Innovation, Innovation through Education” and that leads to an absolutely justified interrogation for the globalized present: Will be able Homo Academicus to adapt to the values of Homo Oeconomicus, sell its know-how and produce conveniently?

  • Homo Oeconomicus și Homo ACADEMICUS: limite și aspecte conceptuale

    Co-Authors: Constantin I. Hălăngescu
    Abstract:

The subject of this paper consist in theoretical study on the relationship between two models of the social-human typology in the context of globalization: Homo Oeconomicus and Homo academicus. Reviewing some of the most approved views on theoretical and conceptual aspects and limits of the two human types presented are not exhaustive and is a starting point for further research that can asnswe to questions like: How far can go the convergence between academics and economics? There are constraints or favorite elements in the relationship between Homo Oeconomicus and Homo Academicus? The assertion of Conclusions section, that Homo academicus is deeply involved in mundus academicus, while Homo Oeconomicus stimulates in a global manner the whole mundus academicus, generates various approaches in which the economics and the academics either mingle or dissociate, and that leads to an absolutely justified interrogation in the globalized present: Will Homo academicus be able to adapt to the values of Homo Oeconomicus, sell its know-how and produce conveniently?

  • Homo Oeconomicus vs. Homo academicus - provocări și dileme din perspectiva globalizării
    2011
    Co-Authors: Constantin I. Hălăngescu
    Abstract:

Structured as an essay, this workpaper aims to present sui generis one point of view on the relationship between two models of the social-human typology in the context of globalization: Homo Oeconomicus and Homo academicus. Being only a starting point for futher research into a tripartite structure, the paper preliminary presents views on views of MAN’s multivalent positions between vocation and the adaptation to globalization flows, the dilemmas and paradoxes between the Oeconomicus and academicus models which I consider inherent into a higher education’s biography in a globalized world. Developed from hypothesis to conclusion, the assertion that Homo academicus is deeply involved in mundus academicus, while Homo Oeconomicus stimulates in a global manner the whole mundus academicus, generates various approaches in which the economic and the academic either mingle or dissociate, but the conjunction or disjunction cases unavoidably lead to outlining the postulate that no architecture on a world academic map is built without „Development through Innovation and Innovation through Education” and that leads to an absolutely justified interrogation in the globalized present: Will Homo academicus be able to adapt to the values of Homo Oeconomicus, sell its know-how and produce conveniently?

  • Homo Oeconomicus and Homo politicus in Ecological Economics
    Ecological Economics, 2002
Co-Authors: Malte Faber, Thomas Petersen, Johannes Schiller
    Abstract:

Abstract The model of Homo Oeconomicus has been criticised in Ecological Economics. We discuss this critique and alternative approaches that have been developed in the literature. In contrast to these approaches, which are based on Arrow's concept of the Social Welfare Function, psychology, biology, and general considerations, we propose a concept of Homo politicus that is founded in political philosophy. We show that this concept is suitable for normative purposes of Ecological Economics. At the same time, we demonstrate in a case study that the concept has empirical relevance in explaining real political processes.

  • Zur Aktualitõt von Adam Smith: Homo Oeconomicus und ganzheitliches Menschenbild
    Homo Oeconomicus, 1998
Co-Authors: Reiner Manstetten, Olaf Hottinger, Malte Faber
    Abstract:

  • Homo Oeconomicus and Homo Politicus, Political Economy, Constitutional Interest and Ecological Interest
    Kyklos, 1997
Co-Authors: Malte Faber, Reiner Manstetten, Thomas Petersen
    Abstract:

Are modern democracies capable of preserving the constituent of liberty and the natural basis of human existence in the long-run? The achievement of these aims requires political actions toward fundamental changes in modern societies. The respective political actors have to develop long-term constitutional and ecological interests. Attempts of public choice to derive such interests on the basis of Homo Oeconomicus have led to theoretical difficulties. To contribute to a theoretical basis for constitutional and ecological interests, the authors introduce the notion of Homo politicus. Homo Oeconomicus and Homo politicus are not mutually exclusive alternatives, but dimensions of human behavior. Copyright 1997 by WWZ and Helbing & Lichtenhahn Verlag AG
