    Abstract:

    A 62-yr-old woman with a 2-cm enhancing renal mass in the right moiety of a Horseshoe Kidney was treated via a four-port transperitoneal laparoscopic approach. The tumour was excised by cold scissors, and the parenchyma was sutured with Vicryl 1 sutures with Surgicel bolster and by using pledgets of Hem-o-lok® clips. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a partial nephrectomy for tumour excision on a Horseshoe Kidney by a transperitoneal laparoscopic approach.

    Abstract:

    We report on 3 pediatric patients with multicystic dysplasia involving 1 component of a Horseshoe Kidney. Including our cases, 18 cases of unilateral multicystic dysplasia in a Horseshoe Kidney have been reported. The clinical, radiological and pathological features of these cases are briefly reviewed. The association of multicystic dysplastic Kidney and Horseshoe Kidney presents a unique diagnostic challenge. Because of the rarity of unilateral multicystic dysplasia in a Horseshoe Kidney and the size of the dysplastic component, which crossed the midline in our patients, we chose to excise that component. Cross-sectional imaging techniques, that is computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, were helpful in diagnosis and in planning operative treatment.

  • Case Report Concomitant Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava and Horseshoe Kidney

    Abstract:

    Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) and Horseshoe Kidney (HSK) are common congenital abnormalities; however presence of both in the same person is extremely rare. A patient with hepatitis C cirrhosis awaiting transplant presented with worsening liver dysfunction, diagnosed with acute renal failure secondary to hepatorenal syndrome, and required X-ray fluoroscopy guided tunneled venous catheter placement for hemodialysis. Review of imaging studies demonstrated coexistence of PLSVC and HSK. PLSVC in adulthood is usually incidental with the most common drainage pattern being without physiologic dysfunction. Isolated Horseshoe Kidney is still the most common of renal fusion anomalies; however etiology of coexistent PLSVC remains unknown
