Objectives To evaluate the impact of Human Factor Design elements on congestive heart failure (CHF) order set utilization, and compliance with recommended CHF clinical practice guidelines (CPG). Methods This was a descriptive retrospective medical record review of adult patients who were admitted from our emergency department with the primary diagnosis of CHF. We collected data on acuity and CPG parameters before and after the introduction of a new CHF order set. The new orders were succinct and visually well organized, with narrative information to encourage use of CPG. Results Eighty-seven patients were studied before, and 84 after, the introduction of new orders. There were no differences in the use of the order sets based on patient acuity before or after the intervention. Order set use significantly increased by the first postintervention interval (POST) and reached 72% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 52% to 86%) during the third POST, compared with a baseline utilization of 9% (95% CI = 5% to 17%; p < 0.001). Compliance with CPG for angiotensin-converting enzyme reached significance in the second POST and was maintained in the third at 83% (95% CI = 61% to 94%), compared with a baseline value of 25% (95% CI = 7% to 59%; p = 0.008). Intravenous nitroglycerin also increased significantly from the first POST and reached 78% (95% CI = 55% to 91%) in the third POST, compared with baseline of 12% (95% CI = 2% to 47%; p < 0.003). Furosemide dosing, systolic blood pressure reduction, and urine output did not significantly change. Conclusions Introduction of an order set for CHF with attention to Human Factor Design elements significantly improved utilization of the orders and compliance with CPG.

Affective Human Factors Design with Ambient Intelligence for Product Ecosystems

This entails a number of technical challenges to be addressed, such as, the elicitation, evaluation, and fulfillment of affective needs, as well as the evaluation of capability of producers to launch the planned products. To tackle these issues, this research proposes an affective Human Factor Design framework to facilitate decision-making in Designing product ecosystems. In particular, ambient intelligence techniques are applied to elicit affective customer needs. An analytical model is proposed to support affective Design analysis. Utility measure and conjoint analysis are employed to quantify users’ affective satisfaction, while the producers’ capability to fulfill the respective customer needs is evaluated using a capacity index. Association rule mining techniques are applied to model the mapping of affective needs to Design elements. Configuration Design of product ecosystems is optimized with a heuristic genetic algorithm. A case study of Designing the living room ecosystem is reported with dual considerations of customers’ satisfaction and producer’s capacities. It is demonstrated that the affective Human Factors Design framework can effectively manage the elicitation, analysis, and fulfillment of affective customer needs.

Human-Factors Design for Public Information Technology

LasnikAbstract:This chapter examines the realm of Human-Factors Design for public information technology in the rapidly evolving postmodern knowledge age of the 21st century, with special focus on how new research and development into Human cognition, perception, and performance capabilities is changing the Design function for IT systems and products. Many “one size fits all” IT Designs are neither adaptive nor adaptable—promulgating a top-down technological imperialism penetrating every aspect of their use. The communication, collaboration, and interaction infrastructure of IT organizations thus remains acutely challenged with enduring problems of usability, learnability, accessibility, and adaptability. As the function and form of products undergo increasingly rigorous scrutiny, one important Design goal is emerging as a paramount priority: improving the usability of products, tools, and systems for all stakeholders across the enterprise. It is therefore important to briefly describe emerging Human-Factor Design knowledge and practices applicable to organizations that invent, incubate, innovate, prototype, and drive the creation and application of public IT. The findings here suggest the most effective strategies to manage and augment user-centered Design (UCD) endeavors across a wide array of public IT products and organizations.
