    Abstract:

    Confusion exists over the species status and host-specificity of the tapeworm Rodentolepis (= Hymenolepis) Nana. It has been described as one species, R. Nana, found in both humans and rodents. Others have identified a subspecies; R. Nana var. fraterna, describing it as morphologically identical to the human form but only found in rodents. The species present in Australian communities has never been identified with certainty. Fifty one human isolates of Rodentolepis (= Hymenolepis) Nana were orally inoculated into Swiss Q, BALB/c, A/J, CBA/ CAH and nude (hypothymic) BALB/c mice, Fischer 344 and Wistar rats and specific pathogen free (SPF) hamsters. Twenty four human isolates of R. Nana were cross-tested in flour beetles, Tribolium confusum. No adult worms were obtained from mice, rats or hamsters, even when immunosuppressed with cortisone acetate. Only one of the 24 samples developed to the cysticercoid stage in T. confusum; however, when inoculated into laboratory mice the cysticercoids failed to develop into adult worms. The large sample size used in this study, and the range of techniques employed for extraction and preparation of eggs provide a comprehensive test of the hypothesis that the human strain of R. Nana is essentially non-infective to rodents.

    Abstract:

    Rats are animals that are susceptible to being infected with dengerous diseases because they like dirty environments. Hemintheasis spread by rats, namely hymenolepiasis.transsmision of this worm disease can occur directly and indirectly. Direct trasmission is caused by consuming water or food contaminated with worm egg while direct trasmission occur through intermediate fleas. The purpose of the study was to determine the presence of Hymenolepis Nana dan Hymenolepis Diminuta eggs in rats faeces and childern’s faeces in hamlet sraten, and to find out what percentage of faeces of mice and faeces of childern’s infected with Hymenolepis Nana dan Hymenolepis Diminuta. The method used is direct method which is macroskopis and microskopis and indirect method of sedimentation examination. Faecel sampling is done by simple random sampling.  Based on the results of examination  of 30 rats samples and 17 faeces samples the childern obtained result of second faeces samples of mice positively infected with Hymenolepisdiminuta eggs or at 6,67%, in the childern’s faeces samples not Hymenolepis Diminuta eggs were found. Whereas Hymenolepis Nana infection was not found in the rat faeces samples or childern’s faeces samples or with a negative 100% percentage.

    Abstract:

    When mice were treated with carrageenan just before infection with eggs of Hymenolepis Nana, they failed to exhibit sterile immunity to the egg challenge, with evidence of a decrease in the number of peripheral macrophages (Mo) and the rate of carbon clearance. Although there were high levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1) released into the intestinal tracts of the parasitized mice at challenge infection, there was almost no release of IL-1 in those treated with carrageenan just before challenge. These results strongly suggest that Mo have an important role in protective immunity to H. Nana in mice.

    Abstract:

    Infections by adult cestodes are widely distributed in the world, and induced digestive and general disturbances. In this study, 40 patients with Taenia saginata and 15 with Hymenolepis Nana were treated by one single oral dose of Praziquantel, at the dosage of 10 mg/kg/day and 20 mg/kg/day respectively. As side effects, no biological disturbances occurred, but 6 patients complained of abdominal pain and diarrhea. The efficiency was complete. Praziquantel, a wide spectrum anti-helminthic day drug, used in schistosomiasis, fascioliasis, cysticercosis, is the best treatment of adult cestodes.
