ontogenetic changes of alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone α msh like immunoreactivity in the brain and Hypophysis of a scyliorhinid dogfish scyliorhinus torazame an immunohistochemical study
Fish Physiology and Biochemistry, 2001Co-Authors: Akira Chiba, S OkaAbstract:Ontogenetic development of α-MSH-IR (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone-like immunoreactivity) in the brain and Hypophysis of a scyliorhinid dogfish (Scyliorhinus torazame) was studied immunohistochemically. α-MSH-IR first appeared in the hypothalamus of the brain in embryos at the 43-mm stage. Thereafter, α-MSH-positive cells and fibers gradually increased in number in mainly the tuberculum posterius of the hypothalamus during the embyonic periods. In the post-hatching juveniles at the 95-mm and 125-mm stages, α-MSH-positive structures in the brain were comparable to those in adult fish, although the distributional range of α-MSH-IR structures in the brain was less extensive than those in adult fish. In the Hypophysis, α-MSH-positive cells first appeared in the caudal part of the adenoHypophysis at the 54-mm stage, approximately coincident with the onset of pigmentation in the skin. During ontogenesis, the MSH-producing cells increased in number straightforwardly in the adenoHypophysis.

distribution of neuropeptide y like immunoreactivity in the brain and Hypophysis of the cloudy dogfish scyliorhinus torazame
Cell and Tissue Research, 1992Co-Authors: Akira Chiba, Yoshiharu HonmaAbstract:Using a specific antiserum raised against synthetic neuropeptide Y, we examined the localization of immunoreactivity in the brain and Hypophysis of the cloudy dogfish, Scyliorhinus torazame, by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. Immunoreactive perikarya were demonstrated in the ganglion of the nervus terminalis, the dorsocaudal portions of the pallium dorsale, the basal telencephalon, and the nucleus lateralis tuberis and the nucleus lobi lateralis in the hypothalamus. Labeled perikarya were also found in the tegmentum mesencephali, the corpus cerebelli, and the medulla oblongata. Some of the immunoreactive neurons in the hypothalamus were of the CSF-contacting type. The bulk of the labeled fibers in the nervus terminalis ran toward the basal telencephalon, showing radial projections and ramifications. Large numbers of these fibers coursed into the nucleus septi caudoventralis and the nucleus interstitialis commissurae anterioris, where they became varicose and occasionally formed fine networks or invested immunonegative perikarya. In the diencephalon, immunoreactive fibers were observed throughout the hypothalamus, e.g., in the pars neurointermedia of the Hypophysis, the subependymal layer of the lobus inferior hypothalami, and in the neuropil of the posterior (mammillary) recess organ. Labeled fibers were scattered throughout the rest of the brain stem and were also seen in the granular layer of the cerebellum. These results suggest that, in the dogfish brain, neuropeptide Y or a related substance is involved in a variety of physiological processes in the brain, including the neuroendocrine control of the Hypophysis.

Comparison of Curimba semen (Prochilodus lineatus) induced by pituitary extract from chicken, rabbit or carp
Forty eight curimba (Prochilodus lineatus) were selected and hipophysed with broiler chicken Hypophysis extract (BCHE), rabbit Hypophysis extract (RHE) or carp Hypophysis extract (CHE) as a control. The animals were randomly induced with treatments arranged in one factorial of three hormones and three weeks. Animals treated with BCHE, CHE and RHE produced an average of 0.65, 0.45 and 0.20 mL of semen, respectively. Therefore, difference (P0.05), with an average of 2.75 points. According to these results it is possible to concluded that BCHE showed the same efficiency or it was even better than traditional CHE when used to induced males. However, more research effort with RHE is necessary, particulary with older animals Hypophysis

volumetric assessment of optic nerve sheath and Hypophysis in idiopathic intracranial hypertension
American Journal of Neuroradiology, 2014Co-Authors: J Hoffmann, Christoph Schmidt, Hagen Kunte, Randolf Klingebiel, Lutz Harms, Hansjurgen Huppertz, L Ludemann, Edzard WienerAbstract:BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a headache syndrome characterized by increased CSF pressure. Compression of the Hypophysis and distension of the optic nerve sheath are reliable imaging signs. The purpose of the study was to validate, in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension, MR imaging–based volumetric measurements of the optic nerve sheath and Hypophysis as an objective observation method for more accurate diagnosis and posttreatment follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension as well as age-, sex-, and body mass index–matched controls underwent volumetric measurements of the optic nerve, optic nerve sheath, and Hypophysis on high-resolution T2-weighted MR images by using a 7-cm surface coil, followed by correlation with CSF opening pressures and clinical symptom scores of visual disturbances and headache. RESULTS: Mean values of optic nerve sheath (341.86 ± 163.69 mm3 versus 127.56 ± 53.17 mm3, P 201.30 mm3 (sensitivity, 86.96%; specificity, 91.30%) and Hypophysis volumes of CONCLUSIONS: Semiautomated volumetric measurement of optic nerve sheath and Hypophysis has the potential to more accurately diagnose and follow patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Acta Scientiarum. Animal Sciences, 2003Co-Authors: Danilo Pedro Streit, Gentil Vanini De Moraes, Ricardo Pereira Ribeiro, Walangiery Da Costa Cacador, Eduardo Shigueiro Sakaguti, Jayme Aparecido Povh, Ederval Donizete De SouzaAbstract:Three treatments for piavucu, Leporinus macrocephalus (Anostomidae) reproduction were utilized: broiler chicken hipophysis extract (BCHE), rabbit hipophysis extract (RHE) and, as control, carp hipophysis extract (CHE). Fifty-five males with 0.69kg, on average, were randomly allotted in the three treatments. Semen volume produced were higher (p 3 were similar (p>0.05) in the three treatments. There was difference (p 0.05) among the treatments, in relation of spermatic vigor and progressive motility. The study revealed that BCHE was efficient on males gonadal inducement of Leporinus macrocephalus , but RHE was not efficient, mainly, for produced volume.
