Development of Investment-casting process of mg-alloys for aerospace applications
Advanced Engineering Materials, 2007Co-Authors: Gurutze Arruebarrena, Jukka Väinölä, Sandor Devenyi, Achim Wendt, Konrad Weiss, Celal Cingi, John Townsend, Sajid Mahmood, Iñaki Hurtado, Arye Ben-dovAbstract:Investment casting offers high-quality castings with good dimensional accuracy, being therefore suitable for aircraft applications. Since commercial ceramic shells react with Mg melts and appropriate inhibitors being not available, magnesium alloys are not widely used in Industrial Investment-casting. In order to overcome this situation and enable the aircraft industry to take advantage of the light-weight properties of magnesium, the process is analyzed within the European FP6 IDEA project, which aims at developing new high-strength magnesium casting alloys for aeronautic applications.

Investment Casting of Thin Sections in Superalloys
'Purdue University (bepress)', 2018Co-Authors: Kroneman, Logan PAbstract:The ability to create highly complex components through Investment casting of superalloys is extremely important for producing turbine blades. Often, the sharp corners in the castings will not fill completely, resulting in unintentionally rounded corner which must be machined to achieve the final, required dimensions. By better understanding the interactions between the liquid metal and the mold, the as-cast shape can be improved, producing higher quality castings. A 2D, analytical model was developed to predict the ability to fill a V-shaped channel lined with cylindrical particles. The model was found to accurately predict the ability to fill a channel based on the contact angle, particle radius, corner angle, and head height. The predictions from the analytical model were verified using small-scale experiments and the 3D surface modeling software, Surface Evolver. The head height and contact angle were found to have the biggest impact on the ability to fill, while the particle radius has a smaller effect on filling. Sessile drop experiments with pure nickel droplets on alumina substrates of varying roughness, similar to those found in Industrial Investment casting, in flowing argon found that the measured, or effective, contact angle can be altered by approximately 20° based on the substrate surface roughness, with surfaces that are more rough having higher effective contact angles. There is little benefit to decreasing the surface roughness below a -325 mesh particle size (?44 ?m), but increasing the surface roughness above a -325 mesh will negatively impact corner filling. The 2D analytical model was used to design a casting to measure the ability to fill fine features similar to those in turbine blades as a function of head height, feature size, and corner half-angle. The casting was produced from MAR M247 using conventional Investment casting processes. The casting shows a dependence of the ability to fill sharp corners on head height, while the mold and wax pattern do not. This proves that the rounded corners found in castings can be due to the inability to fill the sharp corners in the mold

bayesian inference based Investment casting defect analysis system for Industrial application
The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2017Co-Authors: Amit Sata, B RaviAbstract:In spite of the best efforts of foundry engineers, many castings contain defects and need to be rejected, repaired, or recycled (remelted). This leads to an unnecessary wastage of production resources, reduced productivity, and delayed supply of parts to customers. The defects can be significantly reduced by identifying and controlling the relevant parameters (related to process and composition), through the application of comprehensive domain knowledge. This is, however, a challenging task since the above parameters vary within a wide range, and it is difficult to determine the specific range of values that should be avoided to prevent the defects. In this paper, we present a Bayesian inference-based methodology for analysis and reduction of casting defects. The data related to process parameters and chemical composition of alloy, as well as the number of defective castings, is collected from a foundry. The values of posterior probability of each input parameter are computed using Bayesian inference to identify the most influencing parameters and the avoidable range of their values. The system was successfully tested on real-life data obtained from an Industrial Investment-casting foundry, leading to significant reduction in rejection rate of cast parts. The proposed methodology, implemented using Microsoft Excel, was found to be easy to use by practicing engineers, without any training or customizing, and can therefore be applied to any Investment-casting foundry.

And Investment Commissions in Governorates were established in 2008 and the first Investment contracts concluded in 2010 after the issuance of regulation for selling and renting real estates and state lands No. 7 of 2010 canceled by Regulation No. 6 of 2017 and Iraq ratified in 2013 the Washington Agreement to settle Investment disputes for the year 1965. The Investment law included a mechanism for obtaining Investment licenses, guarantees, privileges, tax and customs exemptions and banking facilities as means of encouraging Investment and arranging penalties for breaching its provisions represented by delaying fines, withdrawal of the Investment license and compensation for damages caused to others and to end the relationship of investor whose license is withdrawn with the project and the Investment commission, the Investment project must be liquidated with compensation to investor for the executed works, and the fact that the liquidation of the project is one of the effects of the withdrawal of the Investment license. The liquidation is mentioned once in the law and this requires clarification of the liquidation provisions by stating the cases of liquidation in law and regulation. The liquidation produces legal effects affecting the parties of the Investment relationship represented by the investor and others (such as the Investment Commission and landowner, consulting, sectoral, funding, executing parties… etc.). The liquidation mentioned in the Investment law is the judicial liquidation through court decisions or the decisions of commercial arbitration centers, in order to distinguish it from administrative liquidation when the Commission issues administrative decisions or through a consensual agreement whereby the investor -whose Investment license is withdrawn- concedes project assets to the new investor in exchange for appropriate compensation, and each of them has advantages and disadvantages and studying it make it easier for the investor to choose the easiest in terms of speed and ease of procedures
