However, these relationships have to be characterized, e.g. in terms of delivering value, generating revenues, and sharing risks, which can be done through a business model. Nevertheless, the existing research on business models lacks structure especially with regard to IPS2. To provide a first step into closing this research gap, this study aims at delivering an IPS2-specific business model ontology. Based on this, a case study of a solution provider is conducted.

To date, comprehensive research on the design and engineering of dynamic IPS2 business models has not been conducted, which has resulted in a lack of modeling and simulation methods that depict their dynamic behavior over the entire IPS2 life cycle. In order to fill this research gap, this paper focuses on an integrated business model design and engineering approach with System Dynamics.

Multiple networked partners are involved in the delivery of the IPS2, i.e. the customer, the IPS2 provider and suppliers. The information provided by the partners and the supplied resources need to be coordinated, controlled and managed by a software system. In this paper, an architecture and a conceptual design for such a system, called IPS2-Execuion System, is presented. For this architecture, the structure of the IPS2 organization, among others, has to be taken into account.

The required resources to carry out these processes have to be planned with strategic and operational methods. However, these methods have not yet been utilized in Industrial applications. In this paper, the requirements for the transfer and application of the IPS2 resource planning are discussed based on a case study of a global German machine tool manufacturer. The results of the review give valuable indications for the integration of the planning tool for existing machine tool manufacturers.

The article to be launched describes the general approach of Industrial Product-Service Systems including motivation and definitions. The incorporated paradigm shift from leadership in technology to leadership in use enables innovative business models. It is shown how a flexible solution space arises from these business models. The broad overview of the scientific issues in Industrial Product-Service Systems is complemented by exemplary research results regarding the delivery phase, like modular organization and operational resource planning.

Hence, steel producers are forced to enter promising markets like the offshore wind market. Moreover, they have to offer innovative Products like Industrial Product-service systems (IPS2). Both entering the offshore wind market and offering IPS2 are challenging (each aspect per se is ambitious and above all the combination) since these two aspects demand for a shift of the steel producer's existing business model. Especially, the adaption of the key resources within the business model is challenging. In particular, the steel producer needs to acquire new competencies. Against this background, there is an urgent need for an integrative analysis of the decision-making problem concerning the acquisition of these competencies. For this purpose, the system-oriented and holistic approach of system dynamics is used within a practical case study.

This paper provides a framework to stabilize the influence of risk and uncertainty by a lifecycle-oriented, permanent risk management-system for IPS2. First of all, this article identifies different drivers and consequences of risk perception, then discusses the characteristics of IPS2 and finally analyzes requirements of a risk management-system for IPS2.

Here, flexibility gains importance as a critical success factor. This is especially true for those innovative business models, which have in common relational and long-term customer-supplier relationships. As a solution to the mentioned uncertainties connected with such a business relationship, one can think of flexibility designed Industrial Product-Service Systems. The contribution at hand focuses on contracts to control customer-supplier relationships, which remain incomplete due to their long-term horizon and the resulting uncertainties and therefore implicate incentive problems and, thus, inefficiencies. We can show that by re-allocating property rights in use-oriented business models it is possible to distribute incentives and risks more uniformly and to better balance the interests of customers and suppliers. Doing so, the leeway resulting from these incomplete contracts should nor be interpreted as a risk anymore but more as an opportunity to exploit the accordant development of flexible Industrial Product-Service Systems. Our contribution points out the importance of flexibility and describes the opportunity to detect the optimal degree of flexibility of such a system.

Product-service systems (PSS) are among the most important enabler for remanufacturing. Companies that remain owner of a Product have an intrinsic motivation to design goods for longer lifecycles considering the possibility of remanufacturing the Product or its parts after each use phase. In addition, as the end customer only uses the goods without having its ownership, the acceptance – and consequently the demand – for remanufactured goods is significantly improved. This paper presents guidelines for the definition of innovative business models for remanufacturing, utilizing both remanufacturing and PSS characteristics, and permitting the dissemination of knowledge needed for successful implementation within a company strategy and operations model. Focusing on Industrial PSS, an illustrative application of the guidelines is demonstrated.

Industrial Product-Service Systems deal with dynamic interdependencies of Products and services in Production. Research areas cover new concepts and methods which enable the machine producers to design the potential services in an optimal way, already during the development of the machine. This paradigm shift from the separated consideration of Products and services to a new Product understanding consisting of integrated Products and services creates innovation potential to increase the sustainable competitiveness of mechanical engineering and plant design. The latter allows business models which do not focus on the machine sales but on the use for the customer e.g. in form of continuously available machines. The business model determines the complexity of delivery processes. Characteristics of Industrial Product-Service Systems allow covering all market demands.

The resulting Industrial Product–service systems (PSS) are realized by the members of a value creation network in close cooperation with the customers. Thus, the organizational and operational structure of the value creation network has to be designed in order to guarantee the PSS-provider a continuous Product, customer and market feedback. This feedback information provides the basis for a continuous PSS-improvement process, comprising customer specific and customer spanning improvement measures. This paper analyzes the demands on a continuous improvement process (CIP) of PSS and provides a framework concept for a PSS specific CIP. A real-world case study of an Industrial PSS-CIP concludes the paper.

On the basis of corresponding methods, important fields of action, regarding the implementation of the resulting Industrial Product-Service Systems (PSS) in the investment goods industry, can be identified with respect to customer-oriented PSS planning, integrated PSS development, knowledge based PSS control and life cycle-oriented process management. However, its successful realisation for preventing the Production of waste, while increasing efficiencies in the uses of energy and human capital remains a highly convoluted problem. This research article aims to address this issue by presenting an innovative uncertainty-based framework that can be used to assist in achieving increased sustainability within the context of IPS2. The developed framework explains the drivers for decision-making and cost to enable sustainability improvements in transforming to Industrial services. This is based on academic literature, and multiple case studies of seven Industrial companies with over 30 h of semi-structured interviews. The validation of the framework through two case studies demonstrates that uncertainty management can enable resource efficiency and offer sustainable transformation to service provision.
