  • Managing university-Industry Research partnerships through a process of alignment

    Abstract:

    University-Industry Research partnerships provide a mechanism for enhanced knowledge transfer thereby contributing to improved technology development within Industry as well as providing a secure source of Research funding at universities. However, misalignment of objectives, difficulties in the negotiation of Research contracts, and challenges arising from Research co-ordination are just some of the issues that can be encountered. Therefore, following a review of the literature a management framework has been developed to help practitioners manage these issues. The framework is based on the need for alignment in three core areas, namely technical, commercial and social. The alignment mechanism will be explored through case study investigations of three Research partnerships, which included two successful partnerships and one that encountered difficulties. The case studies will be compared and contrasted to help identify management strategies and supporting activities that can be undertaken to underpin the development and subsequent management of university-Industry Research partnerships. The findings include a need for clear leadership of partnerships including boundary spanning; robust commercial arrangements including the allocation of intellectual property rights; effective governance mechanisms and performance measurement; and the significance of companies' absorptive capacity.

  • Resource-based view of university-Industry Research collaboration

    Abstract:

    University-Industry Research collaboration offers both parties involved recognised benefits. Universities can secure funding for students and Researchers, whereas companies can gain access to science and technology to incorporate in improved products. The performance of such collaborations can be closely related to the resources available to the collaborating organisations. Therefore, this paper will examine how university-Industry Research collaborations can be developed and managed through applying the key concepts of the resource-based view of strategy. The Research method is composed of two stages. The first stage involved a series of 32 structured interviews with representatives from companies and the academic sector, which sought to ascertain the resources required for successful university-Industry collaborations. Qualitative assessment of the resources according to either being tangible, intangible or human related identified the capabilities required to underpin collaborations between universities and companies. The second stage involved a case study application of these capabilities to a major university-Industry Research programme. The case study investigation involved reflective analysis of how the resources and capabilities were configured and deployed during the development and management phases of the programme. This allows generation of a set of practitioner oriented recommendations for establishing university-Industry collaborations.

  • Management Framework for Developing University-Industry Research Collaborations

    Abstract:

    This paper describes a management framework that has been successfully utilized at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom (the university) in order to improve the Research development process and the management of university-Industry Research collaborations. This has been part of a systematic approach to increase the level of Research contracts from industrial sources; to strengthen the university’s academic base as well as diversify the sources of Research provision at the university. The strategy deployed has helped to generate a number of major new Research programs with industrial companies over a five-year period. This management approach has been composed of two main platforms of activity, which are: The use of an industrial sector or channel focus (sector platform); and the development and use of structured management methodologies to facilitate the Research collaboration process (process platform). The paper will include a literature review of supporting areas and then a discussion of the activities undertaken according to the aforementioned platform approach and as part of a case study investigation of the overall management framework. The paper will conclude with a set of recommendations for developing university-Industry Research collaborations.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to improve the understanding of university‐Industry Research collaboration through the development of a new process model.Design/methodology/approach – A literature review was carried out on collaborative partnering and supporting factors namely social capital and the role of knowledge. Empirical Research involved a series of 32 structured interviews with relevant stakeholders, with subsequent grouping and conceptualisation allowing common themes to be identified and a new process model to be proposed.Findings – The study finds that there is a lack of integrative frameworks for the management of Research collaborations. Through building on the suggested best practice described in the paper, application of the model to the management of an engineering Research programme has allowed the benefits of this approach as well as some of the underlying issues to be explored in detail.Research limitations/implications – The Research focused on university‐Industry Research coll...

    Analysts assessing the impact of university–Industry Research relations (UIRRs) and increasing proprietary behavior on the part of universities often focus on single-indicators or adopt promotional or critical stances. However, assessing impacts of shifts toward a more proprietary university is inherently complex because of potential countervailing or mediating factors within working relationships. From interviews with 84 biological scientists at nine universities we find scientists view UIRRS and university intellectual property (IP) policies in complex and often conflicting ways. For example, university scientists believe UIRRs are valuable for increasing contact with scientists, but are problematic because working with Industry can restrict communication among scientists. Also scientists believe university IP policies should shield their work from opportunistic behavior and at the same time be designed to attract Industry partners. In addition scientists believe universities use their IP policies primarily as revenue raising vehicles and secondarily to address public good issues such as technology transfer.

    Abstract:

    Academia and Industry increasingly work together, but this is not always an easy endeavor. In this article we investigate how relational mechanisms facilitate trust formation in university–Industry Research collaborations (UICs) in three countries and contribute to the understanding of international similarities and differences in UICs by considering institutional factors, specifically, the strength and maturity of UICs in each country. Analyzing survey data of 618 recent UICs in the US, Japan, and South Korea, we identify the activities of innovation champions as a critical trust building mechanism between firms and universities that complements initial trust formation through tie strength, partner reputation, and contractual safeguards. We find that partner reputation and champion behavior are more important for trust formation in South Korea than in the US and Japan, indicating that in ‘emerging UIC countries’ where most firms and universities have little collaboration experience, reputation and the leadership by innovation champions are more important for trust formation in UICs than in ‘advanced UIC countries’ with strong and mature UIC networks. From a public policy perspective, our findings suggest that networks between firms and universities should be generally strengthened and collaboration partners should be provided with effective contractual safeguards to enhance trust formation in UICs.
