Developing successful partnerships in Electrical and Information Engineering Education (EIE) with EU-programs

Ward, Olivier Bonnaud, Hamed YahouiAbstract:This paper presents the objectives and goals of the EAEEIE and results of the thematic networkprojects and activities run under its patronage. The EAEEIE – European Association forEducation in Electrical and Information Engineering was established in order to enhancepartnerships, cooperation, recognition of Engineering degrees and exchange of students and staffbetween European universities. The EAEEIE organization was actively involved in a number ofthematic network activities supported by EU-programs spanning 20 years. Participants from manyEuropean universities worked together on five different projects since 1996. These five projectsgave the Association an opportunity to develop and strengthen cooperation and partnerships in theeducational area in Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) in a European dimension. Thepaper presents examples of some of the new partnerships, cooperation agreements betweenuniversities and double degree programs are given and shows that the Association body that istruly adding value to the key stakeholders in EIE education across Europe and beyond.

On the way of harmonization of PhD in Europe in Electrical and Information Engineering: status and recommendations
2012Co-Authors: Olivier Bonnaud, Hélène Fremont, Jean-marc ThirietAbstract:In the frame of the thematic networks devoted to the development of LifeLong Learning (LLL) in Europe, the ELLEIEC project, more especially focused on Electrical and Information Engineering, the situation of PhD students in Europe was analyzed. Thanks to a questionnaire submitted to all the members of this network, an overview on 23 European countries was obtained. This paper tries to highlight the several aspects of the status and proposes recommendations in order to make easier the mobility and exchange in Europe at PhD level. The final part of this work is devoted to recommendations to the European partners in order to improve the present situation and to create a real European space for doctoral studies.

How well aligned are the views of generic competence development between Electrical and Information Engineering students, their faulty and their employers?
2010Co-Authors: Anthony Ward, Jean-marc ThirietAbstract:As faculty members it is part of our job, in conjunction with local and/or National government regulations, our institutional rules, regulations and guidance and our faculty Industry advisory committees, to design and deliver appropriate degree programmes to our students. But what is appropriate and does our thinking align with that of the students we educate? This paper presents a project that set out to investigate the alignment of the perception of the importance (to future careers) and level of development of a large set of generic and specific competences. The target group for the project was Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) students, faculty and employers across Europe. The body undertaking this project was the European Association for Education in Electrical Engineering as part of the European Union funded EIE-Surveyor project. In total, 3,275 completed questionnaires were analyzed and analyses have been carried out by gender, academic study level, country and by competence both individually and in groups they for through the application of standard statistical data reduction techniques. This paper introduces the project and its background and explains the research methodology and analyses employed. It shows key results and their impact and provides a set of recommendations for future related work.

Enhancing international cooperation in electrical and Information Engineering through thematic networks

In all the cases, the EAEEIE (European Association for Education in Electrical and Information Engineering) has been the catalyst of both preparing the proposals and coordinating the projects. These projects not only have been key issues to enhance the international cooperation but also have allowed participants to have a clearer idea of what European Higher Education Area means and eventually, have contributed to the actual European harmonisation.

Competences and accreditation in electrical and Information Engineering

The final purpose of the presented work is to give the students the possibility of practicing mobility during their studies and also to enhance the recognition of diploma in Europe and all around the world. This work is achieved within the frame of the EIE-Surveyor (Reference Point for Electrical and Information Engineering in Europe). This ERASMUS thematic network comprises 110 European academic institutions and acts both as an observatory and a proposition force for this evolution, in the disciplinary fields of Electrical and Information Engineering. The project is granted by the EU Commission for a three-year period until October 2008.

The SALEIE Project : A successful International Collaborative Project and springboard for future projects

The project was EU funded and ran from October 2012 to December 2015. It had 45 project partners, 44 from Europe and one from Russia. With a focus on Electrical and Information Engineering, the project explored academic programme governance issues across the consortium and proposed models for ways in which curricula can be specified to help ensure the detail of the programme can be easily understood by others. The project also established a set of fully developed curricula for the ICT Securities and Renewable Energies at the First and Second Cycle Degree levels. Finally the project developed an extensive online resource for the support of students with disabilities. All three of these project ‘threads’ combine to provide a solid foundation for teaching collaborations across Europe especially those which have, as an integral component, a transnational student mobility. The resources created together lay down a suggested academic programme in the two technical areas considered but also as a model that can be used in other technical areas; and also to ‘level the playing field’ of student engagement – opening programmes up for students who need additional support. The paper starts with a summary of the rationale for, and the aims and objectives of the project. It leads on to state the main deliverables and the specific deliverables that should be of interest to curriculum developers across Europe and the impact it has had in terms of dissemination. Finally it makes suggestions for possible follow on projects that promote collaborations and the support of all students.

EAEEIE members participated in several EU projects (i.e. ELLEIEC, THEIERE) with recognized contribution to EIE education process. Its new Strategic Alignment of Electrical and Information Engineering in European Higher Education Institutions (SALEIE) EU supported project aims to provide higher education models in the EIE disciplines that can respond to the key global technical challenges. This paper deals with the last results within the SALEIE project work package WP3 (Global Challenges). After defining the global challenges that the EIE graduates may face, a survey has been conducted to identify existing models in EIE higher education and their degree of response to key global technical challenges.

EIE-Surveyor: Observatory of the Bologna-process in EIE: an aid for the enhancement of mobility

To attain this goal, a survey is proposed, identifying the curricula available in Europe in these disciplines, at the levels of bachelor, master and doctoral studies. The results obtained will be presented in a dedicated website and also a paper monograph in order to allow free access of students or colleagues to this Information.

EIE-surveyor: a new thematic network dedicated to competences and accreditation in electrical and Information Engineering

The usefulness of static Web material's replacing printed text was studied. Simulators of complex data processing and power generating systems were created. Experiences with a remote-controlled process facility were collected. Manufacturing of integrated circuits was visualized. Web-based self-evaluation and feedback systems were implemented for student response assessment. Advanced reactions are basically positive. This work is a contribution to the four-year SOCRATES Thematic Network program of the European Union, lasting from September 1996 until October 2000.
