In this situation Information instead of being an asset becomes a load. This interview study deals with college students’ experiences of Information Overload when working on their thesis. Focus lies on use of Internet based Information resources. The main result was that the students experienced Information Overload in specific situations and steps of the process. Choosing a subject with a manageable focus for the thesis and exploring different Information sources to increase familiarity with the topic was a critical phase. Information Overload also frequently occurred when using search engines. The students reacted to Information Overload mainly with frustration. Strategies to escape Information Overload included choosing a narrow subject for the thesis, avoiding search engines and using reference lists to find the most important sources. The students’ opinion was that the major responsibility for student Information literacy lies with faculty. The academic library was seen as an extra resource. Student interest in Information literacy education offered by the academic library was poor. The general opinion was that librarians are experts in Information seeking, while teachers hold the slightly more important subject knowledge. Our main conclusion is that cooperation between the academic library and faculty is needed to optimize efforts to make students Information literate, thereby avoiding Information Overload.

Health Information Overload among health consumers: A scoping review

Methods In accordance with a published protocol, six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, Embase, and Scopus), reference lists of included articles, and grey literature (Google Advanced Search and WorldCat) were searched. Articles in English were included, without any limit on the date of publication. Results Of the 69 records included for final analysis, 22 studies specifically examined health Information Overload, whereas the remainder peripherally discussed the concept alongside other concepts. The 22 studies focused on one or more of the following: 1) ways to measure health Information Overload (multi-item/single-item scales); 2) predictors of health Information Overload - these included low education level, health literacy, and socioeconomic status; and 3) interventions to address Information Overload, such as videotaped consultations or written materials. Cancer Information Overload was a popular topic amongst studies that focused on Information Overload. Conclusion Based on the identified studies, there is a clear need for future studies that investigate health Information Overload in consumers with chronic medical conditions other than cancer. Practice Implications This review is an initial step in facilitating future efforts to create health Information that does not Overload consumers.

Information Overload in patients with atrial fibrillation: Can the cancer Information Overload (CIO) scale be used?

Obamiro, Kenneth LeeAbstract:Abstract Objective Information Overload can negatively impact positive health behaviors such as cancer screening. The 8-item Cancer Information Overload (CIO) scale appears to be the only validated measure of health-related Information Overload. The present study assesses the validity of the CIO scale when modified for use in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) residing in Australia. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a study of adult Australian patients with AF (N = 386) in which a modified version of the CIO scale was used. In the present study, we examined the construct (convergent and divergent) validity and performed an exploratory factor analysis for the modified scale. Results All items on the modified-CIO scale appear to load onto a single factor. As predicted, higher education levels (rs=-.24, p Conclusion When adapted to the AF context, the modified-CIO scale appears to be a valid measure of Information Overload. Practice Implications A valid scale is required to measure Information Overload accurately. Knowledge of the interplay between Information Overload and various health behaviors help focus future efforts to support patient empowerment.

One of the fundamental algorithmic problems related to viral marketing is the Influence Maximization (IM) problem: given an social network, which set of nodes should be considered by the viral marketer as the initial targets, in order to maximize the influence of the advertising message. In this work, we study the IM problem in an Information-Overloaded online social network. Information Overload occurs when individuals receive more Information than they can process, which can cause negative impacts on the overall marketing effectiveness. Many practical countermeasures have been proposed for alleviating the load of Information on recipients. However, how these approaches can benefit viral marketers is not well understood. In our work, we have adapted the classic Information Cascade Model to incorporate Information Overload and study its countermeasures. Our results suggest that effective control of Information Overload has the potential to improve marketing effectiveness, but the targeting strategy should be re-designed in response to these countermeasures.
