Company Information Privacy orientation: a conceptual framework

CrosslerAbstract:Contemporary organisations struggle to develop effective responses to the complex challenge of deploying sophisticated Information technology systems in an era characterised increasingly by customer demands for Privacy. In this paper, we develop a conceptual framework of Company Information Privacy Orientation that attempts to reconcile the differences between the organisation's Information management objectives and its ethical and legal obligations to address customers' Privacy. Control theory and justice theory are utilised to build an organisation-level framework that is composed of a firm's ethical obligation to its customers, its customer Information management strategy and its assessment of the risks to its business created by legal demands to provide customer Information Privacy. The four different types of company Privacy orientation profiles that emerge from this conceptual framework are then discussed, along with implications for future research.

Privacy in the digital age: A review of Information Privacy research in Information systems

CrosslerAbstract:Information Privacy refers to the desire of individuals to control or have some influence over data about themselves. Advances in Information technology have raised concerns about Information Privacy and its impacts, and have motivated Information Systems researchers to explore Information Privacy issues, including technical solutions to address these concerns. In this paper, we inform researchers about the current state of Information Privacy research in IS through a critical analysis of the IS literature that considers Information Privacy as a key construct. The review of the literature reveals that Information Privacy is a multilevel concept, but rarely studied as such. We also find that Information Privacy research has been heavily reliant on studentbased and USA-centric samples, which results in findings of limited generalizability. Information Privacy research focuses on explaining and predicting theoretical contributions, with few studies in journal articles focusing on design and action contributions. We recommend that future research should consider different levels of analysis as well as multilevel effects of Information Privacy. We illustrate this with a multilevel framework for Information Privacy concerns. We call for research on Information Privacy to use a broader diversity of sampling populations, and for more design and action Information Privacy research to be published in journal articles that can result in IT artifacts for protection or control of Information Privacy.

Decentralized Detection With Robust Information Privacy Protection

However, the raw sensor observations also allow the fusion center to infer private hypotheses that we wish to protect. We consider the case where there are an uncountable number of private hypotheses belonging to an uncertainty set, and develop local Privacy mappings at every sensor so that the sanitized sensor Information minimizes the Bayes error of detecting the public hypothesis at the fusion center while achieving Information Privacy for all private hypotheses. We introduce the concept of a most favorable hypothesis (MFH) and show how to find an MFH in the set of private hypotheses. By protecting the Information Privacy of the MFH, Information Privacy for every other private hypothesis is also achieved. We provide an iterative algorithm to find the optimal local Privacy mappings, and derive some theoretical properties of these Privacy mappings. The simulation results demonstrate that our proposed approach allows the fusion center to infer the public hypothesis with low error while protecting Information Privacy of all the private hypotheses.

Additional thoughts on further expanding the Information Privacy research in IS by drawing on related disciplines to enable a multidisciplinary study of Information Privacy are discussed.

To reach this purpose, this study adopts the theory of self"efficacy to examine factors that influence decisions related to Information Privacy. Further, a longitudinal model is explored whether Information ethics education plays a role influencing students’ concept in protecting Information Privacy. A survey with senior"level undergraduate students is conducted to test the hypothesized model. The findings exhibit an important insight that through Information ethics education, students demonstrate a significant change in their confidence of Privacy self"efficacy; the increase of this concept noteworthy changes their behavior concerning Information Privacy protection. Finally, discussions and conclusions are discussed.

Information Privacy and correlates an empirical attempt to bridge and distinguish Privacy related concepts

The current understanding of Privacy is largely fragmented and discipline-dependent. This study develops and tests a framework of Information Privacy and its correlates, the latter often being confused with or built into definitions of Information Privacy per se. Our framework development was based on the Privacy theories of Westin and Altman, the economic view of the Privacy calculus, and the identity management framework of Zwick and Dholakia. The dependent variable of the model is perceived Information Privacy. The particularly relevant correlates to Information Privacy are anonymity, secrecy, confidentiality, and control. We posit that the first three are tactics for Information control; perceived Information control and perceived risk are salient determinants of perceived Information Privacy; and perceived risk is a function of perceived benefits of Information disclosure, Information sensitivity, importance of Information transparency, and regulatory expectations. The research model was empirically tested and validated in the Web 2.0 context, using a survey of Web 2.0 users. Our study enhances the theoretical understanding of Information Privacy and is useful for Privacy advocates, and legal, management Information systems, marketing, and social science scholars.

Information Privacy research an interdisciplinary review
Management Information Systems Quarterly, 2011Co-Authors: Jeff H Smith, Tamara Dinev, Heng XuAbstract:To date, many important threads of Information Privacy research have developed, but these threads have not been woven together into a cohesive fabric. This paper provides an interdisciplinary review of Privacy-related research in order to enable a more cohesive treatment. With a sample of 320 Privacy articles and 128 books and book sections, we classify previous literature in two ways: (1) using an ethics-based nomenclature of normative, purely descriptive, and empirically descriptive, and (2) based on their level of analysis: individual, group, organizational, and societal. Based upon our analyses via these two classification approaches, we identify three major areas in which previous research contributions reside: the conceptualization of Information Privacy, the relationship between Information Privacy and other constructs, and the contextual nature of these relationships. As we consider these major areas, we draw three overarching conclusions. First, there are many theoretical developments in the body of normative and purely descriptive studies that have not been addressed in empirical research on Privacy. Rigorous studies that either trace processes associated with, or test implied assertions from, these value-laden arguments could add great value. Second, some of the levels of analysis have received less attention in certain contexts than have others in the research to date. Future empirical studies-both positivist and interpretive--could profitably be targeted to these under-researched levels of analysis. Third, positivist empirical studies will add the greatest value if they focus on antecedents to Privacy concerns and on actual outcomes. In that light, we recommend that researchers be alert to an overarching macro model that we term APCO (Antecedents → Privacy Concerns → Outcomes).

Public opinion polls show rising levels of concer about Privacy among Americans. Against this backdrop, research into issues associated with Information Privacy is increasing. Based on a number of preliminary studies, it has become apparent that organizational practices, individuals' perceptions of these practices, and societal responses are inextricably linked in many ways. Theories regarding these relationships are slowly emerging. Unfortunately, researchers attempting to examine such relationships through confirmatory empirical approaches may be impeded by the lack of validated instruments for measuring individuals' concerns about organizational Information Privacy practices. To enable future studies in the Information Privacy research stream, we developed and validated an instrument that identifies and measures the primary dimensions of individuals' concers about organizational Information Privacy practices. The development process included examinations of Privacy literature; experience surveys and focus groups; and the use of expert judges. The result was a parsimonious 15-item instrument with four subscales tapping into dimensions of individuals' concerns about organizational Information Privacy practices. The instrument was rigorously tested and validated across several heterogenous populations, providing a high degree of confidence in the scales' validity, reliability, and generalizability.
