    Anyone who has ever shaved or waxed will no doubt be familiar with Ingrown Hairs and well aware of the pain, irritation and embarrassment they cause. As a therapist, I've seen many Ingrown Hairs and the most memorable ones are the ones that have been squeezed, picked, plucked, dug out and cut at by frustrated clients looking for a solution. More often than not, this leads to infection and potential scarring.

    The emergence of Hair is a defining event during mammalian skin development, but the cellular mechanisms leading to the opening of the Hair follicle canal remain poorly characterized. Our previous studies have shown that early Hair buds possess a central column of differentiated keratinocytes expressing Keratin 79 (K79), which marks the future Hair follicle opening. Here, we report that during late embryogenesis and early postnatal development, K79+ cells at the distal tips of these columns downregulate E-cadherin, change shape, recede and undergo cell death. These changes likely occur independently of sebaceous glands and the growing Hair shaft, and serve to create an orifice for Hair to subsequently emerge. Defects in this process may underlie phenomena such as Ingrown Hair, or may potentially contribute to upper Hair follicle pathologies including acne, hidradenitis suppurativa and infundibular cysts.

    Gegenstand: Es wird der Fall einer hochgradigen Balanitis und eines Penisvorfalls infolge eines stark eingewachsenen Haarrings bei einem Jungbullen der Rasse Scottish Highland beschrieben. Material und Methoden: Initial wurden die vorgefallenen Penisanteile am stehenden, unsedierten Tier gereinigt, mit PVP-Jod-Losung behandelt und durch Anlegen einer Schurze vor Austrocknung und weiteren Verletzungen geschutzt. Ferner erhielt der Bulle ein Antibiotikum und Antiphlogistika parenteral. Durch die Volumenreduktion der vorgefallenen Penisanteile lies sich der Penis nach 5 Tagen ruckverlagern. Hierbei wurde nach vollstandiger Abtragung entzundlicher Auflagerungen ein stark eingewachsener Haarring entdeckt und entfernt. Zur Verhinderung eines Rezidivs erfolgte ein partieller temporarer Verschluss der Praputialoffnung. Die weitere Behandlung umfasste tagliche Praputialspulungen uber 10 Tage und eine parenterale Antibiose uber 5 Tage. Ergebnisse: Nach Entfernung des Haarrings und Ruckverlagerung des Penis heilten die Penislasionen rasch ab. Schlussfolgerung und klinische Relevanz: Der beschriebene Fall verdeutlicht die Notwendigkeit einer zuchthygienischen Untersuchung von Jungbullen bereits vor Aufnahme der Decktatigkeit unter eingehender Adspektion des Penis, da beim Rind Haarringe vor allem durch das hau - fige gegenseitige Bespringen von in Gruppen gehaltenen Jungbullen entstehen konnen.

    Abstract:

    Circle Hair (CH) is an interesting subtype of Ingrown Hair, characterized by the growing of Hair shaft in a spiral or circular morphology underneath a translucent layer of stratum corneum, parallel to skin surface. In contrast to rolled Hair (RH), neither perifollicular inflammation nor abnormal follicular keratinization are known to accompany CH. The reason why the Hair shaft grows circumferentially and transversely under the skin instead of emerging through an apparently open Hair follicle ostium and growing vertically remains to be determined. Although CH is a frequent benign incidental finding in normal skin examination, reports on this disorder are scarce. Herein we report two cases of CH and briefly review the existing literature. We believe that CH develops because of trauma in patients having a genetic susceptibility for this disorder and that CH is more common than the relevant medical literature suggests.
