    Abstract:

    The Insecticidal activities of essential oil extracts from leaves and flowers of aromatic plants against fourth-instar larvae of the mosquito Culex pipiens molestus Forskal were determined. Extracts of Myrtus communis L were found to be the most toxic, followed by those of Origanum syriacum L, Mentha microcorphylla Koch, Pistacia lentiscus L and Lavandula stoechas L with LC50 values of 16, 36, 39, 70 and 89 mg litre−1, respectively. Over 20 major components were identified in extracts from each plant species. Eight pure components (1,8-cineole, menthone, linalool, terpineol, carvacrol, thymol, (1S)-(−)-α-pinene and (1R)-(+)-α-pinene) were tested against the larvae. Thymol, carvacrol, (1R)-(+)-α-pinene and (1S)-(−)-α-pinene were the most toxic (LC50 = 36–49 mg litre−1), while menthone, 1,8-cineole, linalool and terpineol (LC50 = 156–194 mg litre−1) were less toxic. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry

  • Insecticidal Properties of phenols on Culex quinquefasciatus Say and Musca domestica L

    Abstract:

    Thirteen simple phenols and 8 phenolic acids were tested for toxicity to Culex quinquefasciatus larvae and Musca domestica adults. It was found that while the phenolic acids (except salicylic acid) showed little or no effect on acute toxicity, all the tested simple phenols caused mortality within 24 h after application. Lethal doses for acute toxicity of C. quinquefasciatus were successfully estimated for 12 substances using probit analysis. Thymol, carvacrol, 2-ethylphenol, and salicylaldehyde showed significantly the highest efficiency, for which the lethal doses LD_50 were estimated as 30, 36, 38, and 43 μg/ml, respectively. Lethal doses for acute toxicity of M. domestica adults were successfully estimated for ten substances. Thymol, carvacrol, and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol showed significantly the highest efficiency, for which the lethal doses LD_50 were estimated 53, 69, and 87 μg/fly, respectively.

    Abstract:

    The Insecticidal activity of 34 essential oils, extracted from plants, was screened against the house fly, Musca domestica L. under laboratory conditions. Essential oils from Pogostemon cablin proved to be the most efficient at a lethal dose of 3 µg/fly after topical application. Eight oils (P. roseum, O. vulgare, O. compactum, M. pulegium, O. basilicum, O. majorana, T. vulgaris and P. graveolens) were lethal in doses ranging from 10 to 20 µg (10, 13, 13, 13, 15, 17, 18 and 19 µg/fly, respectively). The lethal doses of another 13 oils were ascertained in the range 20–50 µg/fly, nine oils had lethal doses of 50–100 µg. For two oils, the lethal dose could not be for the topical application. In the fumigant test, the most efficient proved to be Mentha pulegium oil (4.7 µg/cm2). For 10 oils, a lethal dose between 5 and 10 µg/cm2 was ascertained (T. bipinata, C. aurantifolia, T. occidentalis, T. matschiana, S. officinalis, T. vulgaris, M. quinquenervia, O. compactum, C. limonum and R. officinalis, respectively). For the other 10 oils a lethal dose from 10 but to 80 µg/cm2 was ascertained, and for 13 oils the lethal dose was higher than the highest dose in the tests. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
