    Abstract:

    Much of sociological analysis is devoted to assessing the relative importance of ascribed and achieved characteristics for social mobility. In this article, we extend this line of sociological work byfocusing on children's differential opportunity to achieve their genetic potentialfor Intellectual Development. We hypothesize that the extent to which a child realizes his or her genetic potential depends on socioeconomic environment. Using a large sibling sample collected by the National Longitudinal Study ofAdolescent Health, we test this hypothesis with a variant of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) as the dependent variable. When measures of social environment are considered simultaneously, parental unemployment and ethnicity have a significant effect on the extent to which geneticpotentialfor Intellectual Development is realized. Ourfindings suggest thatpolicymakers can help children in disadvantaged environments realizefull genetic potentialfor Intellectual Development by altering their social circumstances.     Abstract:

    Although adverse consequences of poverty for children are documented widely, little is understood about the mechanisms through which the effects of poverty disadvantage young children. In this analysis we investigate multiple mechanisms through which poverty affects a child’s Intellectual Development. Using data from the NLSY and structural equation models, we have constructed five latent factors (cognitive stimulation, parenting style, physical environment, child’s ill health at birth, and ill health in childhood) and have allowed these factors, along with child care, to mediate the effects of poverty and other exogenous variables. We produce two main findings. First, the influence of family poverty on children’s Intellectual Development is mediated completely by the intervening mechanisms measured by our latent factors. Second, our analysis points to cognitive stimulation in the home, and (to a lesser extent) to parenting style, physical environment of the home, and poor child health at birth, as mediating factors that are affected by lack of income and that influence children’s Intellectual Development.

    Objective To study the effects of environmental lead pollution on infant Intellectual Development and provide scientific evidnce for making policy on preventing environmental lead pollution.Methods The method of longitudinal tracing was used.Infants aged 6 th months were subjected to mental Development test by Gesell Developmental scales,and blood lead,zinc and hemoglobin assays to eliminate those with severe Intellectual Developmental disorders,zinc deficiencies or anaemias form this analysis.A total of 300 infants were involved in the final analysis and were divided into the following 2 groups:the lead poisoning group(n=32)and the control group(n=268),according to the blood lead levels.Risk factors for lead poisoning were also investigated.The infants were re-tested by Gesell Developmental scales and blood lead assay at 9 th,12 th and 15 th month of age.Results The mean blood lead value was 57.62 μg/L and the incidence of lead poisoning was 10.67% among infants aged 6 months.The blood lead level increased along with aging.The Intellectual Development,especially that of adaptability,language and social interaction,was significantly lower in lead poisoning group than in control group(P0.01).Logistic regression analysis revealed that the parents' occupations,dwelling environment,behavior habit,diet habit and nutritional status were the main influencing factors of lead poisoning.Conclusion Environmental lead opllution had negative effects on infants' Intellectual Development.Policies should be made to reduce the environmental lead level.

    Abstract:

    Objective:To evaluate the effects of early intervention on the Intellectual Development of zinc deficiency infants.Methods:Using the method of lengthways tracking,infants were checked at the first month by Gesell Developmental scales and 600 normal infants were selected as investigation objects.Zinc in peripheral blood of the 600 infants was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer in 6th month after birth and divided the 600 infants into two groups:zinc deficiency group and normal control group.The zinc deficiency group received zinc supplementation for 3 months and in 9th,12th and18th month infants received Gesell Developmental scales and zinc detection respectively.The control group only received Gesell Developmental scales and zinc detection without any intervention.Results:The incidence of zinc deficiency was 35.50% in infants and the Intellectual Development of zinc deficiency group was significant lower than normal control group,noticeably on adaptability,language and social interaction zones(P0.01).However,after zinc supplementation the infant's Intellectual Development of zinc deficiency group was significantly improved and the difference started to shrink in 9th month,there was no difference in 12th month(P0.05).Conclusion:Zinc deficiency interferes infant's Intellectual Development and early intervention can improve Intellectual Development of zinc deficiency infants.
