    Abstract:

    We present the results of a user study performed within a multitask healthcare simulation, where nurses are required to care for virtual patients within a 3D virtual environment while recording data in a 2D graphical user interface (GUI) based electronic health record system, presented in a dual display visual layout. We evaluated whether a traditional Interaction Metaphor of mouse and keyboard for both virtual and GUI sub-systems of our simulation was superior in terms of user preference and performance to a hybrid Interaction Metaphor of using touch screen for the virtual environment while using mouse and keyboard for the GUI. We investigated the hybrid Interaction Metaphor due to its potential to provide a natural touch-based engagement for our trainees with the virtual patient and the 3D environment, while maintaining a familiar Interaction Metaphor of a keyboard and mouse for user input in the electronic health record view of the simulation. User preference and performance both indicate that the traditional Interaction Metaphor was more usable than the hybrid Interaction Metaphor, although each Interaction technique was sufficiently usable for accomplishing simulation goals.

  • Evaluation of Smartphone-based Interaction techniques in a CAVE in the context of immersive digital project review

    Abstract:

    Immersive digital project reviews consist in using virtual reality (VR) as a tool for discussion between various stakeholders of a project. In the automotive industry, the digital car prototype model is the common thread that binds them. It is used during immersive digital project reviews between designers, engineers, ergonomists, etc. The digital mockup is also used to assess future car architecture, habitability or perceived quality requirements with the aim to reduce using physical mockups for optimized cost, delay and quality efficiency. Among the difficulties identified by the users, handling the mockup is a major one. Inspired by current uses of nomad devices (multi-touch gestures, IPhone UI look'n'feel and AR applications), we designed a navigation technique taking advantage of these popular input devices: Space scrolling allows moving around the mockup. In this paper, we present the results of a study we conducted on the usability and acceptability of the proposed smartphone-based Interaction Metaphor compared to traditional technique and we provide indications of the most efficient choices for different use-cases accordingly. It was carried out in a traditional 4-sided CAVE and its purpose is to assess a chosen set of Interaction techniques to be implemented in Renault's new 5-sides 4K x 4K wall high performance CAVE. The proposed new Metaphor using nomad devices is well accepted by novice VR users and future implementation should allow an efficient industrial use. Their use is an easy and user friendly alternative of the existing traditional control devices such as a joystick.

    Abstract:

    In this paper we presents the results of our experimental study which aims to understand the impact of three Interaction 3D Metaphors (ray casting, GoGo, and virtual hand) on the user experience in a semi-immersive collaborative virtual environment (the Braccetto System). For each session, participants are grouped in twos to reconstruct a puzzle by an assemblage of cubes. The puzzle to reconstruct corresponds to a gradient of colors. We found that there is a significant difference in the user experience by changing the Interaction Metaphor on the copresence, awareness, involvement, collaborative effort, satisfaction usability, and preference. These findings provide a basis for designing 3D navigation techniques in a CVE.

    Abstract:

    The design of the virtual environment (VE) has to take into account several factors including the input and output devices, the design of the Interaction Metaphor and the application domain. In addition to these considerations, the design of collaborative virtual environment (CVE) needs to take into account the collaborative aspect of the Interaction Metaphor, in one hand, the Interaction Metaphor must be designed to produce the most possible task performance. In the other hand, the influence of the Interaction Metaphor on the user's experience (in terms of psychological and social considerations) constitutes an important research question. To address this research question, we presented a new user-centred method for Collaborative Virtual Environments in taking into account human factors. Our goal is to study the effect of 3D Interaction Metaphors in CVE on copresence, involvement, awareness and collaborative effort.

  • The role of dimensional symmetry on bimanual psychomotor skills education in immersive virtual environments

    Abstract:

    The need for virtual reality applications for education and training involving bimanual dexterous activities has been increasing in recent years. However, it is unclear how the amount of correspondence between a virtual Interaction Metaphor to the real- world equivalent, otherwise known as dimensional symmetry, affects bimanual pscyhomotor skills training and how skills learned in the virtual simulation transfer to the real world. How does the number of degrees of freedom enhance or hinder the learning process? Does the increase in dimensional symmetry affect cognitive load? In an empirical evaluation, we compare the effectiveness of a natural 6-DOF Interaction Metaphor to a simplified 3-DOF Metaphor. Our simulation interactively educates users in the step-by-step process of taking a precise measurement using calipers and micrometers in a simulated technical workbench environment. We conducted a usability study to evaluate the user experience and pedagogical benefits using measures including a pre and post cognition questionnaire over all levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, workload assessment, system usability, and real world psychomotor assessment tasks. Results from the pre and post cognition questionnaires suggest that learning outcomes improved throughout all levels of Bloom’s taxonomy for both conditions, and trends in the data suggest that the 6-DOF Metaphor was more effective in real-world skill transference compared to the 3-DOF Metaphor.
