    Abstract:

    As the popularity and diversification of both Internet and its Access devices, users' browsing experience of web pages is in great need of improvement. Traditional browsing mode of web elements such as table and image is passive, which limits users' browsing efficiency of web pages. In this paper, we propose to enhance browsing experience of table and image elements in web pages by enabling real-time Interactive Access to web tables and images. We design new browsing modes that help users improve their browsing efficiency including operation mode, record mode for web tables and normal mode, starred mode, advanced mode for web images. We design and implement a plug-in for Microsoft Internet Explorer, called iWebWidget, which provides a customized user interface supporting real-time Interactive Access to web tables and images. Besides, we carry out a user study to testify the usefulness of iWebWidget. Experimental results show that users are satisfied and really enjoy the new browsing modes for both web tables and images.

    Abstract:

    Images are widely used in web pages. However, most web images can only be viewed passively. Currently, it remains inconvenient for users to collect and save web images for further editing. The positioning of a certain image in web pages with a large number of images, such as the image search results, is also troublesome and time-wasting, especially for mobile devices with small screens. In this paper, we propose to enable real-time Interactive Access to web images and design three modes of browsing web images including normal mode, starred mode and advanced mode. We implement a plug-in for Microsoft Internet Explorer, called iWeblmage, which incorporates efficient computer graphics algorithms and provides a customized user interface supporting real-time Interactive Access to web images. Experimental results show the usage scenarios of the three browsing modes and prove that iWeblmage is well accepted by users.

Unfortunately, most web tables can only be passively Accessed but cannot be Interactively Accessed, that is, users can view information displayed in tables but cannot control the presentation of tables like sorting data and hiding or showing a column/row. Interactive Access is especially useful when encountering large tables or browsing on small screens. In this paper, we propose to enable Interactive Access to genuine web tables based on automatic table detection and a good understanding of table contents. We designed and implemented a plug-in for the Microsoft Internet Explorer, called the iWebTable, which provides a customized user interface supporting Interactive Access to genuine web tables. Experimental results show that users are satisfied and really enjoy the Interactive Access mode to web tables, especially in such cases as they need to sort data in large tables or compare data in distant columns or rows.

    Autonomic communication and computing is a new paradigm for dynamic service integration over a network. An autonomic network crosses organizational and management boundaries and is provided by entities that see each other just as partners. For many services no autonomic partner may guess a priori what will be sent by clients nor clients know a priori what credentials are required to Access a service. To address this problem we propose a new Interactive Access control: servers should interact with clients, asking for missing credentials necessary to grant Access, whereas clients may supply or decline the requested credentials. Servers evaluate their policies and interact with clients until a decision of grant or deny is taken. This proposal is grounded in a formal model on policy-based Access control. It identifies the formal reasoning services of deduction, abduction and consistency. Based on them, the work proposes a comprehensive Access control framework for autonomic systems. An implementation of the Interactive model is given followed by system performance evaluation.

    Autonomic communication and computing is the new paradigm for dynamic service integration over a network. In an autonomic network, clients may have the right credentials to Access a service but may not know it; equally, it is unrealistic to assume that service providers would publish their policies on the Web so that clients can do policy evaluation themselves. To solve this problem, the chapter proposes a novel Interactive Access control model: Servers should be able to interact with clients asking for missing or excessing credentials, whereas clients my decided to comply or not with the requested credentials. The process iterates until a final agreement is reached or denied. Further, the chapter shows how to model a trust negotiation protocol that allows two entities in a network to automatically negotiate requirements needed to Access a service. A practical implementation of the Access control model is given using X.509 and SAML standards.

Policy-based network Access and management already requires a paradigm shift in the Access control mechanism: from identity-based Access control to trust management and negotiation, but this is not enough for cross organizational autonomic communication. For many services no autonomic communication partner may guess a priori what will be sent by clients and clients may not know a priori what credentials are demanded for completing a service requiring the orchestration of many different autonomic nodes. To solve this problem we propose to use Interactive Access control for autonomic communication: servers should be able to get back to clients asking for missing credentials, whereas the latter may decide to supply or decline requested credentials and so on until a final decision is made. This proposal is grounded in a formal model on policy-based Access control using abduction. We identify the key algorithm for Interactive Access and show its correctness. The Web Services-based implementation that we have developed is also sketched.
