  • sustainable purchasing in food retailing Interorganizational Relationship management to green product supply
Business Strategy and The Environment, 2016
    Co-Authors: Olga Chkanikova
    Abstract:

Stakeholders’ demands for product sustainability redefine the focus of corporate purchasing strategies from the traditional concern with financial performance to considerations of ‘triple bottom line’ viability. This adds to the complexity of managing Interorganizational Relationships and poses a question regarding corporate ability to effectively leverage suppliers over environmental and social performance of supplied goods. Since it is not clear what type of purchasing Relationship is more favorable for greening a product supply, the current paper aims to investigate how food retailers manage their Relationships with suppliers in order to influence the environmental and social performance of procured goods and improve the availability of sustainably produced supply. The research is based on two case studies of Swedish supermarkets and supplementary semi-structured interviews with Swedish, British and Danish supermarkets. The results of the study contribute to the existing body of academic knowledge in the field of sustainable supply chain management by developing a typology of sustainable purchasing Relationships with detailed insights into the nature of collaborative practices, structure of incentives, sustainability ambition, and approaches to verification of compliance. The study has also revealed the dependence of sustainable purchasing Relationships on the characteristics of the procurement context, namely the presence of well-established sustainability certification schemes, perceived by purchaser's situation with availability of sustainability certified supply and purchaser's interpretation of the state of power dependence in Relationships with suppliers. • revisiting the interplay between contractual and relational governance a qualitative and meta analytic investigation
    Social Science Research Network, 2014
    Co-Authors: Zhi Cao, Fabrice Lumineau
    Abstract:

Although extant literature has shown that formal contracts and relational governance play a key role in Interorganizational Relationships, the nature of their interplay still remains equivocal. To better understand the Relationships between contractual and relational governance, we conducted a qualitative review and meta-analysis of the existing literature. Meta-analytic results from 33,051 Interorganizational Relationships across 149 empirical studies have indicated that contractual governance is positively related to both sides of relational governance — trust and relational norms. Our results have also indicated that contracts, trust, and relational norms jointly improve satisfaction and Relationship performance and jointly reduce opportunism. These findings provide strong evidence for the complementarity arguments of the contractual-relational governance Relationships and their joint impacts on performance. We also found that the mutual Relationships between contractual and relational governance are moderated by the institutional environments, the Interorganizational Relationship type and length, and the construct measurement of contracts. Overall, this study provides new insights on when contractual and relational governance complement or substitute each other. We discuss the implications of our study for theory and practice and propose a research agenda for future research on governance in Interorganizational Relationships.

  • the moderating effects of supplier portfolio characteristics on the competitive performance impacts of supplier facing process capabilities
    Journal of Operations Management, 2012
    Co-Authors: Xinlin Tang, Arun Rai
    Abstract:

Abstract We draw on the Interorganizational Relationship management literature to examine how contextual characteristics of the supplier portfolio (portfolio concentration, Relationship length, and supplier substitutability) moderate the impacts of process alignment and partnering flexibility – two of a firm's key supplier-facing process capabilities to manage supplier Relationships – on a product line's competitive performance. Our analysis of survey data on a firm's supplier portfolio for a major product line indicates that the impacts of process alignment and partnering flexibility on competitive performance are moderated by the three supplier portfolio characteristics. Specifically, while concentrated Relationship portfolios, long-term Relationships, and supplier substitutability amplify the positive effect of process alignment on competitive performance, concentrated Relationship portfolios and long-term Relationships attenuate the competitive benefits that firms derive from partnering flexibility. While long-term Relationships and concentrated supplier portfolios enhance the competitive benefits of process alignment, operations managers also need to recognize the detrimental effects of these supplier portfolio characteristics on the competitive benefits of partnering flexibility.

  • A Systematic Literature Mapping on Interorganizational Information Systems
    AIS Electronic Library (AISeL), 2019
    Co-Authors: Diirr Bruna, Santos Gleison
    Abstract:

Organizations increasingly need to establish partnerships with other organizations to face environment changes and remain competitive. This Interorganizational Relationship allows organizations to share resources and collaborate to handle business opportunities better. However, besides all benefits, organizations usually face several challenges. Organizations should consider many factors, but appropriate methods, techniques and tools that support these organizations to identify what is relevant and necessary for the partnership are still required. Moreover, there are open challenges concerning different ICT areas, among which to think over issues regarding the Interorganizational information systems (IOIS) development. The present research explores the ICT support to Interorganizational Relationships. To this end, a systematic mapping was performed to understand what is an IOIS and how these systems support Interorganizational Relationships. A discussion about the findings, challenges and open issues identified from the retrieved literature is also provided to guide further work
