    Abstract:

    Abstract The effects of epiphytic bacteria on the growth of the ciguatera dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus toxicus were examined. Neither of the two G. toxicus strains used in this experiment were able to proliferate in PES medium when the algal cells were in an axenic condition, while proliferation occurred in four of seven bacterial strains examined. Alteromonas sp. strain B4 was the most effective and was found to excrete high molecular weight (>10 kDa) substances into the medium. The effects of isolated epiphytic bacteria on the growth of G. toxicus were assayed using an algal culture which was contaminated by associated bacteria to maintain the algal growth constant. Most bacteria isolated from the surfaces of red algae Jania spp. with peptone-agar medium did not affect the growth of G. toxicus . One strain, however, Flavobacterium sp. strain C1 clearly inhibited algal growth. Many bacteria were isolated with the utilization of enrichment techniques from Jania spp. where G. toxicus abundantly occurs. The bacterial flora on Jania spp. differed between samples in both number and colony characteristics and the inhibition of G. toxicus growth.

    Abstract:

    SUMMARY Populations of the toxic, epiphytic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus Adachi et Fukuyo are asSociated closely with Jania sp. on Hitiaa and Papara fringing reefs in Tahiti. Small populations were also observed to be asSociated with Amphiroa sp. and Halimeda opuntia (L.) Lamouroux. The cells attached themselves to the thallus by means of a short thread. When the thalli were irradiated, the cells began to detach from them and swim around the branches. The swimming cells stopped and attached to substrata when a disturbance occurred. The attached cells began to swim within a short time under light conditions when the thallus of Jania sp. were placed near the attached cells. Amphiroa sp. and H. opuntia also induced this re-commencement of swimming of the attached cells. These observations suggest that G. toxicus usually swims around macroalgal thalli on coral reefs. When sudden disturbance or strong water motion occurs, they attach to the surface of macroalgae and are not dispersed. Soon after water motion becomes slow, the cells begin to swim into the water around the thalli. The epiphytism of G. toxicus is different from epiphytic pennate diatoms, most of which adhere to the thallus all the time. The population of G. toxicus is maintained as an asSociation to a limited number of species of macroalgae which support the re-commencement of swimming after disturbance.

J.V.Lamour. —unicas especies citadas en este habitat en Galicia—. Esta consiste en: intergeniculos delgados, ramificacion dicotomica irregular y discos secundarios que facilitan la refijacion al substrato, caracteres congruentes con los de otras especies de Jania de distribucion mas meridional. No obstante, el estudio taxonomico integrador de este material y de otras recolecciones de habitat rocoso confirmo su identificacion como J. longifurca. Asi, la morfologia atipica con intergeniculos delgados y discos secundarios de fijacion es dominante en ejemplares de J. longifurca procedentes de fondos de maerl, mientras que los ejemplares de ambientes rocosos presentan los tipicos intergeniculos robustos. Sin embargo, esta especie no ha sido encontrada en la misma localidad (Riazor, A Coruna), ni en exploraciones posteriores a lo largo de la costa gallega. Paralelamente, se realiza una revision de los restantes taxones del genero (J. longifurca, J. squamata, J. rubens y J. rubens var. corniculata) presentes en el Atlantico iberico. Los caracteres discriminantes para J. virgata son: la ramificacion muy variable siendo la primaria generalmente dicotomica irregular, con di-tricotomias y la secundaria pinnada y opuesta; el tipo de insercion subapical y/o media de las ramulas en los intergeniculos, la relacion longitud/diametro mayor de los intergeniculos apicales respecto a los basales y escasas capas medulares en los intergeniculos. Thus, Jania virgata shows a variable branching pattern, with irregular dichotomous primary branching and pinnate, opposite secondary branching; intergenicula with branchlets at subapical and/or medium position; higher length/diameter ratio at the apical intergenicula than in basal ones; and a low number of medullary cell layers per intergeniculum

This morphology consists on: thin intergenicula, an irregular pattern of dichotomies and secondary attachment discs that facilitate the refixation to the substrate, all of them similar to those of other southern species of Jania. Nevertheless, the integrative taxonomic study of this material and other collections from rocky habitat confirmed its identification as J. longifurca. Thereby, the atypical morphology with thin intergenicula and secondary attachment disc is dominant in samples of J. longifurca from maerl beds, while the samples from rocky environments showed the typical robust intergenicula. Moreover, molecular analysis resolved some phylogenetic affinities with samples from New Zealand, where this species is not recorded. It is concluded therefore the morphological variation related to the environment and it is evident the need of molecular studies to clarify this genus taxonomy, which is based fundamentally on morphological characters.Xunta de Galicia; GPC2015/02
