  • effects of herbs of same nature and flavor but different Meridian tropism on estradiol induced Kidney yang deficiency in mice
Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2011
    Co-Authors: L U Guiyua
    Abstract:

Objective To observe the effects of two couples of herbs of same nature and flavor but different Meridian tropism about Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae,Radix Astragali and Fructus Setariae Germinatus on estradiol-induced Kidney-yang deficiency in mice. Methods A total of 84 healthy adult male ICR mice were divided into seven groups randomly: normal control group, model control group, positive control group(Jin-kui-shen-qi pill),Hippocampus group,Semen Cuscutae group,Radix Astragali group and Fructus Setariae Germinatus group,12 mice in each group.Kidney-yang deficiency mice model was established by intraperitoneal injection of estradiol benzoate, and gastric infusion for 12 days, once a day. After the last administration, the indexes such as physical sign, rectal temperature, grip strength and locomotor activity were observed;blood serum was separated to determine the levels of TP,ALB,ALT,AST,TC,TG;organs of the liver,Kidney, testis and seminal vesicle were dissected to calculate their indexes. Results ①Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae both could heighten the rectal temperature, grip strength and locomotor activity, incerase seminal vesicle index, decrease ALT and AST levels in serum, and reduce liver index. Moreover,Hippocampus could increase renal index and Semen Cuscutae could increase testis index. It was indicated that Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae showed similar pharmacological effects for they had the same nature-warm,flavor-sweet and Meridian tropism in liver and Kidney. They both could improve the symptoms of kid ney-yang deficiency such as soreness of the waist and knees, hyposexuality, intolerance of cold and cold limbs, feeling of listlessness and liver deficiency through the action of Meridian tropism in liver and Kidney with yang-warming.②Radix Astragali and Fructus Setariae Germinatus could increase TP,ALB,TC and TG levels in serum. It was indicated that Radix Astragali and Fructus Setariae Germinatus showed the similar pharmacological effects for they had the same nature-warm,flavor-sweet and Meridian tropism in spleen. They both could regulate the balance of protein and lipid, but they did not have marked effects on the main symptoms of Kidney-yang deficiency for they had Meridian tropism in spleen. Conclusion Herbs of the same nature, flavor and Meridian tropism(Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae of sweet-warm,liver and Kidney Meridian;Radix Astragali and Fructus Setariae Germinatus of sweet-warm,spleen Meridian) show the same or similar pharmacological effects.Correspondingly, herbs of the same nature and flavor but the different Meridian tropism have the different effects. So it may be more significant to investigate the effects of herbs from the aspects of nature and flavor integrated with Meridian tropism.

  • effects of sweet cool and sweet warm chinese medicine with liver Kidney Meridian tropism on estradiol induced Kidney yang deficiency mice
Traditional Chinese Drug Research and Clinical Pharmacology, 2008
    Co-Authors: W U Haifeng
    Abstract:

Objective To compare the effects of sweet-cool Chinese medicine (CM) with liver-Kidney Meridian tropism (Fructus Ligustri Lucidi and Carapax Et Plastrum Testudinis) and sweet-warm CM with liver-Kidney Meridian tropism (Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae) on estradiol-induced Kidney yang deficiency mice. Methods Eighty-four male ICR mice were equally randomized into seven groups:normal control group, model control group, positive control group (Jinguishenqi Wan,1.7 g·kg-1),Ligustri Lucidi group(1.5 g·kg-1),Carapax Et Plastrum Testudinis group(2.8 g·kg-1),Hippocampus group(1.0 g·kg-1) and Semen Cuscutae group(1.5 g·kg-1). Kidney yang deficiency mice model was established by intraperitoneal injection of estradiol benzoate (4 mg·kg-1),and then was given the corresponding drug by gastric infusion for 12 days, once a day. Indexes such as physical sign, rectal temperature, grip strength and locomotor activity were observed. Blood serum was separated to determine the levels of TP,ALB,TC,TG,ALT and AST after the last administration. Indexes of organs such as liver,Kidney, testis and seminal vesicle were dissected and measured. Results Ligustri Lucidi and Carapax Et Plastrum Testudinis could heighten locomotor activity, increase TP and ALB levels in serum. Moreover,Ligustri Lucidi could heighten grip strength, reduce liver index and increase serum levels of TC and TG. It is indicated that Ligustri Lucidi and Carapax Et Plastrum Testudinis showed the similar pharmacological effects for having the same nature and Meridian tropism in liver and Kidney. They could regulate the imbalance of protein and lack of ener gy with the sweet flavor acting on liver and Kidney Meridians. However, they had no effects on aversion to cold and cold limbs in the Kidney yang deficiency mice for cool nature. Both Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae could heighten the rectal temperature, grip strength and locomotor activity, increase seminal vesicle index, decrease ALT and AST level, and reduce liver index. Moreover,Hippocampus could increase renal index and Semen Cuscutae could increase testis index. It is indicated that Hippocampus and Semen Cuscutae showed the similar pharmacological effects for having the same warm nature, sweet flavor and Meridian tropism in liver and Kidney. They could relieve symptoms of Kidney yang deficiency such as soreness of the waist and knees, hyposexuality, aversion to cold and cold limbs, and lack of energy as well as the symptoms of liver deficiency through the action of sweet warm and Meridian tropism in liver and Kidney. Hippocampus,Semen Cuscutae,Ligustri Lucidi and Carapax Et Plastrum Testudinis had similar pharmacological effects through the action of sweet flavor and Meridian tropism in liver and Kidney. For example, they could relieve the symptoms of soreness of the waist and knees and lack of energy. However, they showed different pharmacological effects for the different nature, for example on relieving aversion to cold and cold limbs and hyposexuality. Conclusion Chinese medicine having the same nature, flavor and Meridian tropism exerts the same or similar pharmacological effects. Correspondingly,sweet-cool Chinese medicine with liver-Kidney Meridian tropism has different effects from the sweet-warm ones with liver-Kidney Meridian tropism for their different nature. So it may be more significant to investigate the effects of traditional Chinese medicine from the aspects of drug nature and flavor integrated with Meridian tropism.

  • influence of spleen Meridian herbs on the harmonic spectrum of the arterial pulse
The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, 2000
Co-Authors: Weikung Wang, Yuh Ying Lin Wang
    Abstract:

Pulse analysis is a powerful method in Chinese medicine. We suggest that the effect of herbal medicine is to redistribute the blood to organs and Meridians. In this report, by injecting extracts into rats and then analyzing the blood pressure wave measured at the caudate arteries, we studied eight important spleen Meridian related herbs: They were Semen Lablab, Fructus Amoni Globosi, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Tuber Pinelliae, Radix Codonopsitis, Pericarpium Aurantii and Rhizoma Polygonati. All eight herbs increased the intensity of the 3rd harmonic (C3) of the pressure pulse which is correlated to the spleen and spleen Meridian, as described in traditional Chinese medical literature. All of them also increased the 2nd harmonic (which is correlated to the Kidney and the Kidney Meridian) as well as decreased the heart load (DC term of pressure wave, C0). Tuber Pinelliae, Radix Codonopsitis, Pericarpium Aurantii and Rhizoma Polygonati decreased the 1st harmonic (correlated to the liver Meridian) significantly, while Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae only decreased C1 slightly. Except for Semen Lablab, all the others decreased the intensity of the 5th (stomach Meridian) and the 7th harmonics. The effects of Kidney herbs: Cortex Eucommiae and Radix Achyranthis were also shown for comparison.

  • acute physiological and psychological effects of qigong exercise in older practitioners
Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2018
Co-Authors: Chenchen Wang, Yu-min Wang, Wanchen Chen, Songyen Tsai
    Abstract:

Qigong is a gentle exercise that promotes health and well-being. This study evaluated the acute physiological and psychological effects of one session of qigong exercise in older practitioners. A total of 45 participants (mean age, 65.14 years) were recruited. Meridian electrical conductance, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), heart rate variability (HRV), and Short Form 36 (SF-36) were evaluated and compared before and after one session of qigong exercise. The results revealed that the electrical conductance of all Meridians, except spleen and bladder Meridians, increased significantly (). Compared with baseline values, upper to lower body ratio and sympathetic/vagal index were significantly improved and closer to 1 ( and , resp.). STAI-S and STAI-T scores decreased significantly ( and , resp.). The RR interval of HRV decreased significantly (), a significant positive correlation was observed between Kidney Meridian electrical conductance and SF-36 physical scores (, ), and a positive correlation was observed between pericardium Meridian electrical conductance and SF-36 mental scores (, ). In conclusion, one session of qigong exercise increased Meridian electrical conductance, reduced anxiety, and improved body and autonomic nervous system balance. These findings provide scientific evidence for acute physiological and psychological effects of qigong exercise in older practitioners.
