laelapinae mites acari parasitiformes Laelapidae parasitic of sigmodontine rodents from northern peru with the description of a new species from akodon aerosus rodentia cricetidae sigmodontinae
Journal of Parasitology, 2013Co-Authors: Marcela Lareschi, Paul M VelazcoAbstract:Abstract: Laelapine mites are common parasites of sigmodontine rodents in the Neotropics. However, few species are reported from Peru as a result of the low number of mammal surveys that include ectoparasite collections. Herein we report 12 species of mites from northern Peru. From these, 8 are reported for the first time for the country, and 1 is new to science, Androlaepaps aerosus sp. nov., the latter associated exclusively with the sigmodontine Akodon aerosus. Most of the laelapine species were host specific. The new species, included in the Androlaelaps rotundus species group, resembles An. rotundus “sensu stricto” and An. ulysespardinasi in general appearance but is unique in the length of the hypostomal seta h3 (>58 μm), which is 3 times as long as the gnathosomal seta, and its tip reaching or over-reaching the gnathosomal setal bases; dorsal seta j2 is very long (>70 μm), almost reaching the point of j3.

androlaelaps rotundus fonseca acari parasitiformes Laelapidae taxonomic status lectotype paralectotype designation and new morphological details
Comparative Parasitology, 2010Co-Authors: Marcela Lareschi, Darci Moraes BarrosbattestiAbstract:The status of Androlaelaps rotundus (Fonseca) (Acari: Gamasida: Laelapidae) is solidified by designating a lectotype and series of paralectotypes based on museum specimens. These specimens were studied from the Acari Collection of the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paulo, Brazil. New morphological details given here suggest that a species of Necromys Ameghino may be the host of the type series of A. rotundus.

New records and new species of mites from Cuba, with description of a new genus of Laelapidae (Acari: Mesostigmata).
Zootaxa, 2019Co-Authors: Omid Joharchi, Bruce Halliday, Andrei V. Tolstikov, Viacheslav A. TrachAbstract:This paper presents a new genus, two new species, and several new records of mites associated with insects and soil in Cuba. A new monotypic genus of Laelapidae, Acantholaelaps gen. nov. , is described to accommodate a new species, A . strategus sp. nov. , on the basis of adult female and male specimens collected on Strategus sarpedon (Burmeister) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and Strategus surinamensis hirtus Sternberg (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). The other species recorded were Macrocheles merdarius (Berlese) (Macrochelidae), Asca quinquesetosa Wharton (Ascidae), Gaeolaelaps cubaensis sp. nov. (Laelapidae) and Pseudoparasitus missouriensis (Ewing) (Laelapidae).

Zootaxa, 2013Co-Authors: Omid Joharchi, Bruce Halliday, Gholamreza BeyzaviAbstract:We describe a new species of mite from Iran - Pronacrolaelaps propomacrus sp. nov. (Acari: Laelapidae). The new species was collected in association with the beetle Propomacrus bimucronatus (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Euchirinae) in holes in the trunk of oak trees. The genus Promacrolaelaps is redescribed and distinguished from the related genus Hypoaspis Canestrini sells. strict.

new species and new records of mites of the family Laelapidae acari mesostigmata associated with ants in iran
Zootaxa, 2011Co-Authors: Omid Joharchi, Bruce Halliday, Alireza Saboori, Karim KamaliAbstract:We report on a collection of mites in the family Laelapidae associated with scarabaeid beetles in Iran. Five known species are recorded from Iran for the first time: Coleolaelaps asiaticus Karg, 1999, Hypoaspis integer Berlese, 1911, Hypoaspis pentodoni Costa, 1971, Hypoaspis phyllognathi Costa, 1971, and Hypoaspis terrestris (Leonardi, 1899). Four new species are described: Coleolaelaps costai sp. nov., Hypoaspis larvicolus sp. nov., Hypoaspis maryamae sp. nov., and Hypoaspis melolonthae sp. nov. The ecological relationship between these mites and their beetle hosts has not been analysed in detail, but they probably do not play a major role as biological control agents of pest scarabs.
