    Abstract:

    The genus Laticauda (Reptilia: Elapidae), commonly known as sea kraits, comprises eight species of marine amphibious snakes distributed along the shores of the Western Pacific Ocean and the Eastern Indian Ocean. We review the information available on the geographic range of sea kraits and analyze their distribution patterns. Generally, we found that south and south-west of Japan, Philippines Archipelago, parts of Indonesia, and Vanuatu have the highest diversity of sea krait species. Further, we compiled the information available on sea kraits' occurrences from a variety of sources, including museum records, field surveys, and the scientific literature. The final database comprises 694 occurrence records, with Laticauda colubrina having the highest number of records and Laticauda schistorhyncha the lowest. The occurrence records were georeferenced and compiled as a database for each sea krait species. This database can be freely used for future studies.

    Abstract:

    The physiological costs of living in seawater likely influenced the secondary evolutionary transitions tomarine life in tetrapods. However, these costs are alleviated for species that commute between the land and the sea, because terrestrial habitats can provide frequent access to fresh water. Here, we investigate how differences in the ecology and physiology of three sea krait species (Laticauda spp.) interact to determine their environmental tolerances and geographic distributions. These three species vary in their relative use of terrestrial versus marine environments, and they display concomitant adaptations to life on land versus at sea. A species with relatively high dehydration rates in seawater (Laticauda colubrina) occupied oceanic areas with low mean salinities, whereas a species with comparatively high rates of transcutaneous evaporative water loss on land (Laticauda semifasciata) occupied regions with low mean temperatures. A third taxon (Laticauda Laticaudata) was intermediate in both of these traits, and yet occupied the broadest geographic range. Our results suggest that the abilities of sea kraits to acquire fresh water on land and tolerate dehydration at sea determine their environmental tolerances and geographic distributions. This finding supports the notion that speciation patterns within sea kraits have been driven by interspecific variation in the degree of reliance upon terrestrial versus marine habitats. Future studies could usefully examine the effects of osmotic challenges on diversification rates in other secondarily marine tetrapod species.

    Résumé - Le tricot rayé à lèvres jaunes (Laticauda colubrina) est distribué très largement de l'Est de l'océan Indien à l'Ouest de l'océan Pacifique. Cet article présente une observation d'un individu de L. colubrina à l'Ouest d'Alofi à Wallis et Futuna, un archipel où la présence de tricots rayés était inconnue. Si cette observation pourrait significativement étendre l'aire de répartition connue du tricot rayé à lèvre jaune, la mention d'un seul individu ne permet pas pour l'heure de conclure à l'existence d'une population viable de cette espèce à Wallis et Futuna. D'autres observations seront nécessaires afin de vérifier et de valider la présence d'une population reproductrice de L. colubrina à Wallis et Futuna. Summary - Distributional Record for the Yellow-Lipped Sea Krait, Laticauda colubrina (Schneider, 1799) (Elapidae, Laticaudinae) in Wallis and Futuna.. The yellow-lipped sea krait (Laticauda colubrina) is widely distributed across Eastern Indian and Western Pacific Oceans. This article presents an observation of an individual L. colubrina West of Alofi, in the French territory of Wallis and Futuna Islands. To date, L. colubrina was unknown from this archipelago. This observational record could significantly increase the known distribution of the yellow-lipped sea krait. However, the observation of a single individual cannot confirm the presence of a viable population of this species at Wallis and Futuna. Therefore, other observations are required to confirm the presence of a reproductive population of L. colubrina in Wallis and Futuna.

  • Effects of oceanic salinity on body condition in sea snakes.

    Abstract:

    Since the transition from terrestrial to marine environments poses strong osmoregulatory and energetic challenges, temporal and spatial fluctuations in oceanic salinity might influence salt and water balance (and hence, body condition) in marine tetrapods. We assessed the effects of salinity on three species of sea snakes studied by mark-recapture in coral-reef habitats in the Neo-Caledonian Lagoon. These three species include one fully aquatic hydrophiine (Emydocephalus annulatus), one primarily aquatic laticaudine (Laticauda Laticaudata), and one frequently terrestrial laticaudine (Laticauda saintgironsi). We explored how oceanic salinity affected the snakes' body condition across various temporal and spatial scales relevant to each species' ecology, using linear mixed models and multimodel inference. Mean annual salinity exerted a consistent and negative effect on the body condition of all three snake species. The most terrestrial taxon (L. saintgironsi) was sensitive to salinity over a short temporal scale, corresponding to the duration of a typical marine foraging trip for this species. In contrast, links between oceanic salinity and body condition in the fully aquatic E. annulatus and the highly aquatic L. Laticaudata were strongest at a long-term (annual) scale. The sophisticated salt-excreting systems of sea snakes allow them to exploit marine environments, but do not completely overcome the osmoregulatory challenges posed by oceanic conditions. Future studies could usefully explore such effects in other secondarily marine taxa such as seabirds, turtles, and marine mammals.

    Abstract:

    Premier signalement de Cirrimaxilla formosa (Muraenidae) de Nouvelle-Calédonie, trouvé dans des estomacs de serpents marins. Plusieurs spécimens de Cirrimaxilla formosa (Muraenidae) ont été trouvés dans les estomacs de serpents de mer, Laticauda Laticaudata et L. saintgironsi, capturés en Nouvelle-Calédonie dans le cadre d'une étude écologique sur ces serpents. Ces spécimens représentent le premier signalement de C. formosa en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Cette murène n'était jusqu'à présent connue que par son holotype récolté dans le sud de Taiwan.

    Abstract:

    The sea snake tick (Amblyomma nitidum) is a host specialist of snakes in the genus Laticauda and is one of the few ticks which could be regarded as semi-marine. Yet despite the attention this species has received due to its bizarre ecology, its distribution remains poorly known as geographic records of its occurrence through the Asia-Pacific are highly fragmentary. For the first time this species is recorded from Taiwan based on specimens collected from the yellow-lipped sea krait (Laticauda colubrina).

    The research of identification about sea snake in Tuan Island Waters in Peukan Bada, Aceh Besar District has been conducted. This study aims to determine sea snakes species in Tuan Island Waters. The research was begun from April until July 2018. The method used in this study research is Time Swim Method with four station observation.Types of sea snakes identify based on their morphology, head shape, body and tail, color and band. The result showed that there were types of marine snakes in these waters, they are Acrochordus granulatus and Laticauda sp. The waters parameters of Tuan Island such as temperature, salinity and  pH supported the life of the two snake species.     ABSTRAKTelah dilakukan penelitian Identifikasi Ular Laut di Perairan Pulau Tuan Kecamatan Peukan Bada Kabupaten Aceh Besar. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui spesies ular laut di Perairan Pulau Tuan. Pelaksanaanya berlangsung pada bulan April -Juli 2018. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Metode Time Swimdengan empat stasiun pengamatan. Jenis ular laut diidentifikasi berdasarkan morfologinya, bentuk kepala, badan dan ekor, warna dan corak/bands. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat dua jenis ular laut pada perairan tersebut, yaitu Acrochordus granulatus dan Laticauda sp. Secara keseluruhan parameter perairan Pulau Tuan seperti suhu, salinitas dan pH tergolong sesuai untuk kehidupan dua spesies ular tersebut.Kata Kunci : Acrochordus granulatus, Laticauda, identifikasi, ular laut, Pulau Tuan.Banda Ace
