The designer provides the high level Layout guidelines through an abstract Layout Template. The Template contains placement and routing constrains independently from technology, and can be used hierarchically in the definition of Templates for complex circuits. LAYGEN II uses this expert knowledge to guide the evolutionary optimization kernels during the automatic Layout generation in the target technology. The routing task of the proceeding can range from a Template-based approach to a full automatic generation, if only connectivity is provided. The LAYGEN II tool is demonstrated for the Layout generation of two typical analog circuit structures and the results validated by Calibre ® design rule check tool

LAYGEN II was developed giving special emphasis to the reusability of expert knowledge and to the efficiency of retargeting operations. The designer specifies the sized circuit-level structure, the required technology and also, the Layout Template consisting of technology and specification independent high-level Layout guidelines. For placement, the topological relations present in the Template are extracted to a nonslicing B*-tree Layout representation, and the tool automatically merges devices and improves the floorplan quality. For routing an optimization kernel consisting of a tailored version of the multiobjective multiconstraint evolutionary algorithm NSGA-II is used. The Router optimizes all nets simultaneously and uses a built-in engine to evaluate each of the Layout solutions. The automatic Layout generation is demonstrated here using the LAYGEN II tool for typical analog circuit structures, and the results in GDSII format were validated using the industrial grade verification tool Calibre®.

AIDA results from the integration of two in-house tools, namely, GENOM-POF and LAYGEN II. GENOM-POF performs fully automated circuit-level synthesis implemented with a multi-objective multi-constraint optimization approach, which addresses robust design requirements by considering Corners analysis together with an electrical simulator as the evaluation engine. LAYGEN II implements a DRC proved fully automated Layout generation based on a sized circuit-level description and high level Layout guidelines, described in a technology independent abstract Layout Template. The expert knowledge is used by LAYGEN II to guide the evolutionary optimization kernels during the automatic Layout generation. Moreover, evolutionary computation techniques are extensively used, at both circuit-level and physical-level, as tool to solve design optimization problems. Finally, AIDA environment is demonstrated for the IC design of a classical circuit-level topology and state-of-the-art technology, and validated by industrial simulators and analysis tools, such as, HSPICE® and CALIBRE®.

The proposed approach starts by a high level Layout description (Template), which is independent from technology, although including expert knowledge as placement and routing constrains. Then, based on the set of constrain rules provided by the designer through the Template, the Layout is automatically generated using an evolutionary kernel. Additionally, a module generated is also included in order to allow the automatic generation of different instances for each device in the Layout Template, therefore, automatically enlarging the solution search space. The LAYGEN tool is here presented and demonstrated for the Layout generation of typical circuit structures.

Adaptive Layout Template for Effective Web Content Presentation

NorrieAbstract:Despite the fact that average screen size and resolution have dramatically increased, many of today’s web sites still do not scale well in larger viewing contexts. The upcoming HTML5 and CSS3 standards propose features that can be used to build more flexible web page Layouts, but their po-tential to accommodate a wider range of display environ-ments is currently relatively unexplored. We examine the proposed standards to identify the most promising features and report on experiments with a number of adaptive Layout mechanisms that support the required forms of adaptation to take advantage of greater screen real estates, such as au-tomated scaling of text and media. Special attention is given to the effective use of multi-column Layout, a brand new fea-ture for web design that contributes to optimising the space occupied by text, but at the same time still poses problems in predominantly continuous vertical-scrolling browsing be-haviours. The proposed solutions were integrated in a flex-ible Layout Template that was then applied to an existing news web site and tested on users to identify the adaptive features that best support reading comfort and efficiency
