    The Geschwind-Behan hypothesis, that migraine is more common among Left-handed patients, was tested in 320 migraine sufferers. The frequency of Left-Handedness was also assessed in 68 tension headache patients and compared to that in 140 healthy controls. No significant differences were observed. This study failed to support the association between migraine, tension headache and Left-Handedness using the IHS classification of headache.

    Objective: Left-Handedness reportedly has been more common in persons with neurological afflictions (e.g., stroke) and malformations (e.g., cLeft lip with or without cLeft palate) that demonstrate marked unilateral involvement. Coronal synostosis is also more frequently unilateral, affecting the right side more commonly than the Left. We sought to compare Left-Handedness in patients with unilateral coronal synostosis versus healthy controls. Subjects: All patients aged 3 years or older with nonsyndromic unilateral coronal synostosis and healthy controls recruited by pediatricians blinded to the study. Main Outcome Measures: Prospective data obtained for all participants included age, gender, and Handedness. In patients with unilateral coronal synostosis, the side of synostosis and age at surgery were documented. Left-Handedness in the study and control groups was compared using chi-square analysis. Left-Handedness also was analyzed in the study group according to side of fusion. Results: Eighty-six patients with nonsyndromic unilateral coronal synostosis comprised the study group; there were 96 controls. The mean ages of the study (8.8 years) and control groups (9.8 years) were not statistically different (p > .05). There were more girls in the study group (67%) than in the control group (56%), but this difference was not statistically significant (p > .05). Left-Handedness was documented in 30.2% of the study group and 11.4% of the control group (p < .005). Left-Handedness was twice as common in patients with Left versus right unilateral coronal synostosis (44.4% versus 20.4%; p < .05). Conclusions: Left-Handedness is nearly three times more common in patients with unilateral coronal synostosis than in controls and four times more likely in patients with Left-sided fusion.

    Abstract:

    Left-Handedness and inverted handwriting postures are more frequent among birth-stressed individuals. Because twinning is also associated with increased birth risk, 298 twins were compared to 1192 age and sex matched singletons. Both Left-Handedness and inversion were significantly more common in twins, although other indexes of laterality were not affected.

Halpern, 1991) ignores the supporting statistical evidence, which virtually always shows an increased incidence of Left Handedness (or other Left-sided laterality) associated with a wide range of health risk factors, including serious accidents, immune disorders, early onset breast cancer, alcoholism, smoking, some types of mental retardation, homosexuality, birth-related complications (e.g., resuscitation at birth, extremely low birth weight, Rh incompatibilities, multiple birth, breechbirth, and older maternal age), and selected categories of mental disorders

    To the Editor. —Although the origin for disturbances of sexual orientation and gender identity is not known, several lines of evidence suggest the importance of biologic factors. One often-suggested factor is hormonal fluctuations in utero that alter sexual differentiation of the brain and lead to inappropriate masculinization or feminization.1Another possibility is that some form of prenatal stress has taken place that has disturbed the normal development and gender differentiation of the brain. Handedness provides an accessible behavioral marker that may clarify the origin of disturbed gender identity. Over the past decade, data have accumulated that suggest that elevated prenatal testosterone levels may be associated with an increased incidence of Left-Handedness.2Higher rates of Left-Handedness are also related to prenatal and perinatal stressors, including low birth weight, prolonged labor, birth-related anoxias, Rh incompatibilities, multiple births, breech births, and prematurity.3,4These two sources of increased sinistrality allow us

    Abstract:

    Life span studies have shown that the population percentage of Left-handers diminishes steadily, so that they are drastically underrepresented in the oldest age groups. Data are reviewed that indicate that this population trend is due to the reduced longevity of Left-handers. Some of the elevated risk for sinistrals is apparently due to environmental factors that elevate their accident susceptibility. Further evidence suggests that Left-Handedness may be a marker for birth stress related neuropathy, developmental delays and irregularities, and deficiencies in the immune system due to the intrauterine hormonal environment. Some statistical and physiological factors that may cause Left-Handedness to be selectively associated with earlier mortality are also presented.

    Abstract:

    Cerebral dominance of language function and hand preference are suggested to be heritable traits with possible shared genetic background. However, joined genetic studies of these traits have never been conducted. We performed a genetic linkage study in 37 multigenerational human pedigrees of both sexes (consisting of 355 subjects) enriched with Left-Handedness in which we also measured language lateralization. Hand preference was measured with the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory, and language lateralization was measured with functional transcranial Doppler during language production. The estimated heritability of Left-Handedness and language lateralization in these pedigrees is 0.24 and 0.31, respectively. A parametric major gene model was tested for Left-Handedness. Nonparametric analyses were performed for Left-Handedness, atypical lateralization, and degree of language lateralization. We did not observe genome-wide evidence for linkage in the parametric or nonparametric analyses for any of the phenotypes tested. However, multiple regions showed suggestive evidence of linkage. The parametric model showed suggestive linkage for Left-Handedness in the 22q13 region [heterogeneity logarithm of odds (HLOD) = 2.18]. Nonparametric multipoint analysis of Left-Handedness showed suggestive linkage in the same region [logarithm of odds (LOD) = 2.80]. Atypical language lateralization showed suggestive linkage in the 7q34 region (LODMax = 2.35). For strength of language lateralization, we observed suggestive linkage in the 6p22 (LODMax = 2.54), 7q32 (LODMax = 1.93), and 9q33 (LODMax = 2.10) regions. We did not observe any overlap of suggestive genetic signal between Handedness and the extent of language lateralization. The absence of significant linkage argues against the presence of a major gene coding for both traits; rather, our results are suggestive of these traits being two independent polygenic complex traits.

    Immotile-cilia syndrome is characterized by severe respiratory distress from early infancy, and also often by situs inversus. The first description of the disease was based on just four persons, but reasons were given to suggest that the disorder may not be exceedingly rare. The purpose of the present study was to estimate just how rare or how common it is and to evaluate its association with situs inversus and with Left-Handedness. Data were mainly obtained from contacting a large number of Swedish clinicians who kindly informed us about their patients with suspected immotile-cilia syndrome. Diagnosis was in most cases performed by electron micro-scopical examination of nasal cilia or of spermatozoa. Based on these data, the prevalence of the syndrome in Sweden with or without situs inversus was estimated to be not far from 1 in 10,000. The syndrome consists of several subgroups that have a randomized determination of situs asymmetry (50% of these have situs inversus) and one subgroup in which situs inversus is not found. This results in a frequency of situs inversus in the syndrome of about 44%. Left-Handedness is no more common than it is in healthy persons and no more often associated with situs inversus than with situs solitus. In all cases it is about 14%. It is concluded that the two major anatomical/physiological asymmetries of the human body are found with frequencies which indicate that they develop independently of each other. Both conditions appear with prevalences that may have changed at a secular scale, Left-Handedness with a substantial increase and situs inversus with a less dramatic increase
