  • A critique of Marxism‐Leninism as theory and Praxis

    Abstract:

    A systematic reconsideration of Marxism in theory and practice reveals the inadequacy, indeed the unacceptability, as far as democratic socialists are concerned of Marxism‐Leninism. This article is, in essence, a critique of Marxism‐Leninism and a plea for a less doctrinaire approach to both theory and practice. The point, is not simply that Leninism flies in the face of all that makes marxism desirable, nor simply that Leninism is immoral (as if this were not enough). It is that, although Leninism may be one of the logical consequences of Marxism, it contradicts the Marxist premise and the point of Marx's own work. This may lead us to ask whether Marx's texts display the required internal coherence for a scientific theory. It also considers the approaches within the Marxist‐Leninist traditions which can be identified as deterministic Marxism and voluntarist Marxism neither of which is theoretically or ethically satisfactory. The general argument is related to Marxism and Marxism‐Leninism in Africa.

Kata Kunci: Tindak Pidana, Komunisme, Marxisme-Leninisme, Kejahatan Terhadap Keamanan Negara, Partai Komunis Indonesia. ABSTRACT Court Decision Number 559/Pid.B/2017/PN.Byw is the first decision to be delivered for Heri Budiawan aka Budi Pego as a defendant based on the provision of Article 107 of Act Number 27 of 1999 concerning Amendment to Criminal Code concerning a crime to the security of the state. The defendant was found to be the coordinator responsible for spreading communism under the symbol of hammer and sickle, commonly known as the symbol of communism of Indonesia (PKI). Banner with this symbol was seen among the protesters against gold mining operation of PT. Bumi Sukses Indo in the District of Pesanggaran. It is believed that judge’s consideration contains some errors especially regarding the elements that have to be met in terms of spreading and developing communism/Marxism-Leninism and tort. Tort regulated in Article 10 of Act Number 9 of 1998 as referred to by the Judge does not hold any correlation to the tort intended in Article 107a of Criminal Code.     This study examines the phenomenon of Marxism-Leninism from a perspective of the history of religions, in order to cull the lessons that students of both religion and society might draw from the collapse of that once seemingly impregnable ideology. After considering the reasons advanced by a variety of scholars for calling Marxism-Leninism a religion, as well as at Marxism-Leninism's own claim to be a science, the author suggests that a more fruitful way of looking at is would be as a form of civil religion. It examines the way Marxism-Leninism sought to supplant the historic religions and develop its own ritual system, as well as those features which are not only mythological, but also ideological in precisely the same sense in which Marx himself saw religions as ideological phenomena.

    What is Leninism? This is a seemingly simple but very complex and difficult question to answer.When Lenin was alive,The Soviet Communist Party did not rise Leninism as the party's guiding ideology,nor did it give a clear definition of Leninism.In commemoration of Lenin's course,Stalin,Zinoviev,Bukharin and others familiared with Lenin,who explained Leninism.With the leadership establishment of Stalin in the party and state,he rase own research of Leninism up to the national will,and established Leninism as the party's guiding ideology.Since those drastic changes,there have been negative thoughts of Leninism internationally,the thoughts had influenced Chinese theorists.In recent years,some scholars have re-evaluated the question of Leninism,who have thought Leninism can effectively impact the neo-liberalism's hegemony.To explore what is Leninism,the author should briefly recalled the source of the concept,build Leninist theories from the formation history of Lenin's revolutionary theory,construction theory and ideas of his later years.
