Acute retention of urine as the first clinical manifestation of an unsuspected, asymptomatic chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is found only in sporadic case reports. This report documents a case of CLL in a 65-year-old man presenting with acute urinary retention. The literature pertinent to this topic is briefly discussed.

Unilateral Optic Nerve Leukemic Infiltration and Exudative Retinal Detachment as Initial Manifestations of Central Nervous System Relapse in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia of Children
Journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology, 2014Co-Authors: Kuo-chi Hung, Hsi-kung KuoAbstract:Acute lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a malignant neoplasm caused by the proliferation of poorly differentiated precursors of the lymphoid cells, which are known as blast cells. It is primarily the most common type of childhood Leukemia. Although 70-80% with ALL is cured with modern chemotherapy, 20-30% still have to endure relapse, particularly in the central nervous system (CNS) after attainment of remission. Treatment to prevent recurrence is based on cranial irradiation and intrathecal chemotherapy after conventional induction chemotherapy and the achievement of complete remission. However, the orbital cavity and optic nerve are relatively unaffected by being shielded during brain irradiation and serve as sanctuaries of ALL. Here, we describe a 12-year-old boy with ALL for one year who achieved complete remission after induction chemotherapy. He developed sudden loss of ipsilateral vision prior to CNS relapse twice. His initial ocular presentations noted on ophthalmic examination are unilateral optic nerve Leukemic Infiltration and exudative retinal detachment (RD) respectively.

Urinary symptoms due to Leukemic Infiltration of the prostate A case report

ZwartendijkAbstract:A patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia is presented who suffered from urinary obstructive symptoms due to Leukemic Infiltration of the prostate gland. He was treated with local radiotherapy, which resulted in complete relief of symptoms. Our report indicates that Leukemic Infiltration of the prostate should be considered in the differential diagnosis in patients with CLL presenting with obstructive symptoms of the urinary tract.

Acute Renal Failure Due to Leukemic Cell Infiltration Followed by Relapse at Multiple Extramedullary Sites in a Child with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

We report here a five year-old boy with ALL who presented acute renal failure caused by Leukemic Infiltration at onset. Treatment with predonisolone and hemodialysis was effective. However, he showed persistent or repeated relapses at extramedullary sites, such as central nervous system, testis, and pancreas, suggesting that Leukemic cells of this patient may have had a high affinity to extramedullary organs. On the basis of previous reports and the experience of this patient, intensive treatment may be needed in ALL children with renal involvement.
