    Abstract:

    We investigated trigemino-facial excitatory and inhibitory responses in perioral muscles in hemifacial spasm (HFS). We examined 15 patients affected with idiopathic HFS and 8 healthy controls. Five patients had spasms mostly limited to the periocular region and 10 had spasms also involving the perioral muscles. Responses were recorded from the resting orbicularis oculi (OOc), Levator Labii Superioris (LLS) and orbicularis oris (OOr) muscles, after supraorbital (SO) nerve stimulation and during isolated voluntary contraction of LLS muscle. Eight patients showed complete or partial preservation of the late silent period (SP2) in activated LLS muscle. The remaining 7 patients showed absence of SP2. Early and late excitatory responses were variably present in LLS muscle at rest. Patients with HFS clinically restricted to periocular muscles had at least partial preservation of the SP2. In conclusion, in HFS patients inhibitory trigemino-facial reflexes are impaired and excitatory trigemino-facial responses are elicited in perioral muscles. These two phenomena seem to develop independently; the degree of trigemino-facial reflex impairment parallels the extension of involuntary movements to the lower facial muscles.

    The effects of electrical trigeminal stimulation on activated facial muscles were studied in 20 normal subjects in order to evaluate whether excitatory or inhibitory responses are present and to investigate whether the reflex organization is similar in all the facial muscles. No inhibition was observed in frontalis, orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and mentalis muscles. By contrast, a clear suppression of electromyographic (EMG) activity (late silent period or SP2) was present in the Levator Labii Superioris, depressor anguli oris, and depressor Labii inferioris muscles, with a mean latency ranging from 41.8 to 50.2 ms, and a mean duration ranging from 27.5 to 40.9 ms.     Although affective and semantic word properties are known to independently influence our sensorimotor system, less is known about their interaction. We investigated this issue applying a data-driven mixed-effects regression approach, evaluating the impact of lexical-semantic properties on electrophysiological parameters, namely facial muscles activity (left corrugator supercilii, zygomaticus major, Levator Labii Superioris) and heartbeat, during word processing. 500 Italian words were acoustically presented to 20 native-speakers, while electrophysiological signals were continuously recorded. Stimuli varied for affective properties, namely valence (the degree of word positivity), arousal (the amount of emotional activation brought by the word), and semantic ones, namely concreteness. Results showed that the three variables interacted in predicting both heartbeat and muscular activity. Specifically, valence influenced activation for lower levels of arousal. This pattern was further modulated by concreteness: the lower the word concreteness, the larger affective-variable impact. Taken together, our results provide evidence for bodily responses during word comprehension. Crucially, such responses were found not only for voluntary muscles, but also for the heartbeat, providing evidence to the idea of a common emotional motor system. The higher impact of affective properties for abstract words supports proposals suggesting that emotions play a central role in the grounding of abstract concepts.

    Abstract Objective To describe the reflex responses evoked by trigeminal stimulation in perioral facial motor units (MUs) in humans. Methods We recorded single motor units (MUs) from perioral muscles performing three movements: elevation of the upper lip (Levator Labii Superioris muscle – LLS), protrusion of the lips (orbicularis oris muscle – OOr) and depression of the lower lip (depressor anguli oris and depressor Labii inferioris muscles – DAO/DLI) with concentric needle electrodes. MUs were tested during constant voluntary activation with non-painful cutaneous electrical stimuli applied to the mental or supraorbital nerves and intraorally. Analysis was performed with peristimulus histograms and cumulative sum. Results Eighty MUs were sampled from 17 subjects. Cutaneous stimulation induced inhibition of discharge in 100% of the lip-depressor MUs, inhibition in 65–70% of LLS MUs and in 25% of OOr MUs. Mean latency of inhibition was of 35 ± 12 ms. Intraoral stimulation produced an equivalent percentage of inhibitory or facilitatory effects with no difference among the three muscles. Conclusions Reflex responses to cutaneous stimulation identify a completely inhibitory (DAO/DLI), a mainly inhibitory (LLS) and a mixed (OOr) pattern in perioral muscles. Significance A purely inhibitory trigemino-facial reflex is present in lip-lowering muscles with potential use in clinical practice.

    We examined the relationship between infant attractiveness and adult affect by investigating whether differing levels of infant facial attractiveness elicit facial muscle movement correlated with positive and negative affect from adults (N = 87) using electromyography. Unattractive infant faces evoked significantly more corrugator supercilii and Levator Labii Superioris movement (physiological correlates of negative affect) than attractive infant faces. These results suggest that unattractive infants may be at risk for negative affective responses from adults, though the relationship between those responses and caregiving behavior remains elusive.

    We examined whether faces differing in attractiveness elicit positive and negative affect in 7- to 10-year-old children (N=66) and adults (N=73). Facial electromyography measured affective response. Less attractive faces evoked significantly more Levator Labii Superioris responses in adults and children. Attractiveness was negatively correlated with corrugator supercilii activity in adults, but not significantly in children. These results suggest that less attractive faces evoke greater disgust and negative affect than more attractive faces. Perceivers' affective reactions to attractive faces may play an important role in attractiveness preferences and attractiveness stereotypes.
