In order to provide this intelligence, a major user survey was undertaken at Loughborough University Library in March 2006 of learners’ perceptions of Library Space. Beyond gate counts: seating studies and observations to assess Library Space usage
New Library World, 2016Co-Authors: Gricel DominguezAbstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for the assessment of Library Space use and user experience by combining seating studies, surveys and observational data. Design/methodology/approach Seating usage studies (called seating sweeps), technology-assisted face-to-face surveys and observational data were used to assess Library Space usage and identify user behaviors. Findings Results from the study revealed higher Library use than expected and provided insight into user behaviors and patterns. Practical implications The methods and study described aid in raising awareness of user experience within Library Spaces and provide valuable data for Space redesign efforts. Originality/value The study builds upon methods described by Linn (2013) and combines traditional user experience methodologies to gain insight into Library Space use and user needs.

2014Co-Authors: Penny IsmiatiAbstract:Libraries are required to constantly improve Library services, including infrastructure such as Library Space. This study aimed to study users’ perception on Library Space comfort of ICALTD. The survey using questionnaire was conducted from June to November 2013 with 97 respondents. The variables examined were characteristics of respondents, need for Library Space, Space availability, and Library Space comfort. The analysis was focused on the users’ perception of current conditions (conditions felt during a visit to Library) and user expectations of physical condition of Library Space. The gap between them is quality . The results showed that Library Space mostly needed by users were internet access room, followed by reading room, multimedia room, information desk Space, discussion room, personal reading room, and kid corner, r espectively. Those rooms have been provided by ICALTD although it has not yet met their expectation. Users perceived that they were comfor t during in the Library, but it was not in accordance with their expectation. Space needs, Space availability, and the quality of Space contributed to librar y Space comfort as perceived by users. Further studies should be done by including other variables such as knowledge, attitude and ability of librarians to provide services to the users.

ANALISIS KUALIT AS RUANGAN PERPUSTAKAAN: STUDI KASUS PADA PUSAT PERPUSTAKAAN DAN PENYEBARAN TEKNOLOGI PERTANIAN Analyses of Library Space Quality: Case Study at Indonesian Center for Agricultural Library and Technology Dissemination
2013Co-Authors: Penny IsmiatiAbstract:Good quality of facilities and infrastucture is required to support the achievement of good quality Library services. The assessment of Library Space quality of Indonesian Center for Agricultural Library and Technology Dissemination was aimed at studying users’ perception of Library Space quality and its influencing factors. Survey using open ended questionnaire was conducted from May to August 2013. Ninety seven users’ visited ICALTD were used as respondent. The method used for measuring quality of Library Space is a gap analysis between users' perception on reality that is accepted during visit and users' expectations on quality of infrastructur e . Criteria used for this study followed the methods of top ten qualities of good Library Space from Mc Donalds (2006 ), namely: 1) functional, 2) adaptable, 3) accessible, 4) varied, 5) interactive, 6) conducive, 7) environmental ly suitable, 8) safe and secure, 9) efficient, and 10) suitable for information technology. The findings showed that the respondents’ perceptions on the quality of the Library Space can be categorized as good, but the quality does not meet users' expectation (the gap is 0.735). Based on the results of the study, it can be r ecommended that redesign/renovation of the Library Space is highly required to meet users' expectation. The renovation, should focus on the criteria which have a great negative gap value, namely conducive, accessible, and safe and secure.

The whys and hows of academic Library Space assessment: a case study
Library Management, 2019Co-Authors: Stan Trembach, Jayne Blodgett, Annie Epperson, Natasha FloerschAbstract:The purpose of this paper is to advocate for change in academic Library Space assessment and use philosophy in favor of a more user-centered approach emphasizing Space designed for and by users themselves. This goal is achieved by analyzing the implementation of a recent Space assessment project at the University of Northern Colorado Libraries to investigate specific patterns of Library Space utilization.,This paper presents a case study for which data were collected through a multi-method approach, including flip chart and whiteboard questions, brief semi-structured “tabling” interviews, and more in-depth “roving” interviews.,The current Library literature on Space assessment does not encompass broader, more holistic approaches to how Library Space is used by students, faculty, staff and community users. The findings from this study highlight the diversity of ways patrons may use an academic Library, many of which are related to academic work. However, visitors also come to the Library for other purposes, such as socializing or attending an event. It is imperative that the Space be adequately equipped to meet varied visitor needs and to create a welcoming environment for all patrons.,The paper has several implications for planning and managing the operations of medium-sized academic libraries. It contributes to the larger conversation in higher education about the importance of user research for enhancing visitor experience through data-informed decision-making. Furthermore, the project it details is not an isolated assessment effort but part of the Library’s ongoing Space assessment work.

Applying spatial literacy to transform Library Space: a selected literature review
Reference Services Review, 2018Co-Authors: Juliet Kerico Gray, Melissa Burel, Marlee Graser, Karen GallacciAbstract:The purpose of this paper is to review a selection of articles and books that highlight aspects of spatial theory and literacy from various disciplinary perspectives, along with a review of Library Space studies.,This study reviews Library literature that uses spatial literacy and its related tools. The authors searched in two databases: Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts, and SCOPUS. The paper records were analyzed to find primary research studies, published between 2010 and 2017, which study patron use of Library Space using various single and hybrid methodologies.,The findings of the literature reveal that of the 26 studies reviewed, 23 have a descriptive research question and three have a relational research question. Based on the analysis of the research methodologies used, there is more that can be done in support of a librarian’s research efforts as well as the arenas in which research is conducted.,These findings highlight ways in which Library and information science researchers and those who educate them can broaden knowledge within the profession regarding spatial theory, literacy and applicable research methodologies for studying Library Space.,Current and best practices for designing Library Space studies that use spatial literacy to collect and analyze data are identified along with a discussion of future directions for researchers to better assess Space and communicate the value of physical Space in libraries.
