    Abstract:

    This present study has been conceived to study the status of usage of E-Resources available under INDEST-AICTE Consortium by the Library Users of NIT, Silchar. Descriptive Research Method (Case Study of NIT Library Users) was adopted using self designed questionnaire incorporating some modification from the previous study conducted on usage of e-resources available under UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium by Sinha (2010) [1]. The study was conducted on NIT Library Users which comprises of faculty members, Research Scholars, UG and PG Students perusing Engineering and Management Courses. The study comprises of administration of questionnaires to the participants for knowing their skills in accessing information/e-resources for their academic and research activities. Altogether 180 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents and 132 responses were received. The study was conducted during the period February to June 2013. The data collected from the administered questionnaire were analysed, tabulated and represented in graphical form using Microsoft Excel. The study shows that most of the respondents are aware of the INDEST-Consortium and are using e-resources, mainly the e-journals, frequently for seeking information. While analyzing data, it has been found that maximum Users are using equally printed and electronic resources for their academic purposes. It is interesting to note that majority of Users under study prefer e-resources while only a few of them prefer printed resources. Majority of respondents have suggested that the authority should provide adequate Internet Terminals with high speed of bandwidth for optimum utilisation of e-resources available under INDEST-AICTE Consortia.

    Abstract:

    The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of the modernisation of academic libraries in the ICT era, changing format of the Library resources and types of computer-based services being offered by the academic libraries. In view of this, the present chapter discusses various aspects of LIS training and user education, emphasising the need to empower our LIS professionals and Library Users so that they benefit from the new technologies by using new ICTs for exploring the world of knowledge for their academic pursuit and excellence in higher education and research. The first part of the chapter discusses the recent development in the areas of application of ICT in academic libraries, availability, and usage of electronic resources by the Library Users, new services provided by the academic libraries to their end Users. The second part of the chapter highlights the need for empowering LIS professionals working in academic libraries and their end Users in electronic / digital era, enumerates the role of various agencies that are engaged in making Library Users aware of printed as well as e-resources, and explains the role of Web 2.0/Library 2.0 in making Library Users more interactive and well informed about the resources, products, and services of the academic libraries to their clientele. The third part of the chapter discusses the user education programme/user awareness programme being organised and offered to the students and research scholars by the Assam University Library (Rabindra Library, Silchar) as a case study. While concluding the chapter, some suggestions and recommendations are also discussed in brief.

    The present study was undertaken with a view to know the status of information seeking behaviour of college Library Users of Cachar district, Assam which comprises of undergraduate students faculty members and research scholars. The respondents of the present study are mainly drawn from the five selected college libraries of Cachar district, Assam where the penetration of Computers and Internet is very low and teachers, research scholars and students are not very much comfortable using computers. For that purpose, survey method has been adopted by the investigators, which comprises of administration of questionnaire, observation of the participants, and interview of some of the participants for knowing the status of Information Seeking Behaviour of the respondents in respect of Library visit, preference of reading materials pertaining to their academic and research activities. The self designed questionnaire has been distributed amongst the randomly selected samples. The samples comprise of UG students, faculty members, research scholars, and Staff. The filled up questionnaires have been collected from the respondents for the data analysis and interpretations. On the basis of filled up questionnaire the data has been.     The present study has been undertaken with a view to know the scenario of N-LIST Programme implementation and status of the ICT and Internet literacy skills amongst the College Library Users who have been mainly drawn from the ten selected college libraries of Barak Valley of South Assam to access E- Resources available under N-LIST Resources. The present work was carried out during January to May 2012. For that purpose, survey method was adopted, which comprises of administration of questionnaire, observation of the participants, and interview of some of the participants for knowing the opinion of the respondents in respect of usage of eresources available under N-LIST Programme/ services for their academic and research activities.The self designed questionnaire comprising of 19 questions has been distributed amongst the randomly selected 200 samples, out of which 153 respondents have responded. The present investigation is delimited to the randomly selected population of College Library Users who are regularly visiting their respective college Library and using the Internet for accessing to the eresources/web resources available under the N-LIST Programme of INFLIBNET. On the basis of filled up questionnaire received from the respondents, data has been analyzed and tabulated using SPSS Software. For data analysis percentage technique has been adopted. Due to paucity of space important findings have been enumerated in brief.The paper highlights the important survey findings in respect of demographic profiles of college Library Users, their Library visit pattern, e-resources use pattern and expectations of college Library Users from the N-LIST Programme through which the scholarly contents are made available to the Library Users. Besides this, some suggestions and recommendations to solve the impediments for non-implementation of N-LIST Programme and under utilization of e-resources have also been enumerated in brief.

    Abstract:

    This research investigated preservation practices of personal digital information by public Library Users. This qualitative study used semistructured interviews and two visual representation techniques, information source horizons and matrices, for data collection. The constant comparison method and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. A model emerged which describes the effects of social, cognitive, and affective influences on personal preservation decisions as well as the effects of fading cognitive associations and technological advances, combined with information escalation over time. Because the preservation of personal digital information involves personal, social, and technological interactions, the integration of these factors is necessary for a viable solution to the digital preservation problem. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify strategies to help academic libraries to be more useful and present to Users in the context of the plethora of information made available by the online revolution.Design/methodology/approach – Professors Davenport and Beck's stickiness model, comprising convenience, relevance, engagement and community, outlined in The Attention Economy: Understanding the New Currency of Business, is first identified as a framework to examine how to improve stickiness between the Library and its Users. Each factor is investigated in the context of an academic Library and then specifically, in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
