    On May 11, 2009, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Thomas B. Ferguson, MD. Few surgeons of any generation have been so universally revered by their contemporaries as Tom Ferguson, the only living surgeon to have served as President of both the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (1976– 1977) and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (1981–1982). Tom was born in Oklahoma, where his grandfather Ferguson was the first Territorial Governor of Oklahoma, his father was a successful newspaper publisher, and his mother, Lucia Loomis Ferguson, was quite famous as a nationally syndicated columnist fervently devoted to women’s rights. Tom attributes his early interest in medicine to his grandfather Loomis, who upon graduating from the Cincinnati Medical School in the 1880s spent his life as a frontier doctor among the Choctaw Indians of the Oklahoma territory. After attending public schools in Oklahoma, Tom graduated from Duke University and then from its medical school and thereafter trained in surgery at both Duke and Barnes Hospital/ Washington University in St Louis with a year out to complete a Public Health Service fellowship in physiology at Harvard. With the exception of 4 years in private practice in Florida in the early 1960s, Tom’s entire professional career has been spent in St Louis. A simple litany of the awards that Tom Ferguson has received and the important positions that he has held during his career would exceed my allotted word count for this article. Tom has been honored with awards and appointments repeatedly by his friends and surgical colleagues in St Louis, by his alma mater, by his national and international surgical colleagues, and by virtually every organized body in his specialty.     The Clinical & Scientific Section of the Canadian Diabetes Association is pleased to announce that Dr. Barry I. Posner is the recipient of the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. The Canadian Diabetes Association established the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 for the purpose of recognizing Canadian Achievement for a Lifetime commitment to research excellence. The award is bestowed upon a prominent Canadian MD or PhD medical scientist who is recognized and nominated by his or her peers for longstanding contributions to the Canadian diabetes community and for being a leader in diabetes research. Dr. Posner has demonstrated career commitment to new knowledge and discovery in diabetes research and has contributed significantly to the Canadian and international diabetes community through the commitment of time, skills and wisdom. Dr. Posner has had a highly accomplished career and has made pivotal discoveries and advances in diabetes research spanning nearly 5 decades. Dr. Posner’s major contributions to the field include identifying the role of intracellular processes in both realizing and regulating insulin signalling. In recent years, Dr. Posner’s research has also led to breakthroughs in understanding the genes responsible for diabetes. One of his early advances in diabetes research was the discovery of insulin receptors in newly recognized insulin target tissues such as the placenta, which had not previously been regarded as an insulin-sensitive target. He extended these studies to identify insulin receptors in a range of tissues, including brain and vascular endothelial cells. Since this finding, a wealth of literature has been produced concerning various actions of insulin in these 2 tissues, and the origin can be credited to Dr. Posner. Through his research, he discovered that peptide hormones can upregulate their own receptors, which added to the knowledge of peptide hormone receptor regulation. In the midto late-1970s, he and Dr. John Bergeron found insulin receptors in vesicular elements, thus raising the possibility of intracellular signalling. At this time, Dr. Posner and colleagues also pioneered the use of the electron microscope to analyze the biology and subcellular localization of insulin and growth factor receptors. The use of the electron microscope allowed Dr. Posner to be the first scientist to show receptors in the circumventricular organs of the central nervous system and the endothelium of microvessels. In collaboration with Dr. Bergeron, Dr. Posner uncovered a novel organelle—the endosomal system—and found that endosomes are central sites for initiating and regulating signal transduction. In the late 1980s, Dr. Posner discovered the peroxovanadium compounds to be potent phosphotyrosine phosphatase inhibitors. He employed these compounds to demonstrate the key role of phosphotyrosine phosphatases in regulating receptor tyrosine kinase signalling. In particular, he showed that peroxovanadium compounds could activate the insulin receptor kinase and the full signalling cascade in the complete absence of insulin and that this could occur entirely from the endosomal system. Most recently, Dr. Posner and his colleagues have focused on the field of the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes. Through a large genomewide association study, they identified sites (new single-nucleotide polymorphisms) within the genome that conferred increased risk for type 2 diabetes. This research has allowed for gains that are of particular significance for understanding insulin resistance and islet cell function and has added depth to understanding the factors leading to diabetes and to the treatment of the disease. In addition to his extensive Achievements in research, Dr. Posner also contributes to the academic and medical communities in numerous educational and leadership capacities. Demonstrating his level of excellence early in his career, Dr. Posner was named the Gold Medalist of his class at the University of Manitoba Medical School. He undertook postgraduate work in the United States at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the National Institutes of Health prior to joining the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University in 1970, where he continues his role as a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Anatomy and Cell Biology.     Professor Emeritus Govindjee, of the University of Illinois, Urbana, who had been earlier selected by the Board of Directors of the Rebeiz Foundation for Basic Research (to be referred also as the RFFBR Foundation), to receive the first RFFBR Lifetime Achievement Award, was honored during a ceremony on June 16, 2007, at the Foundation headquarters in Champaign, Illinois. Over 60 guests including the authors (Christoph Benning, Hans Bohnert, Ken Hoober, Archie Portis and C. A. (Tino) Rebeiz), and Carole Rebeiz, attended the ceremony which included a buffet style dinner, testimonials by C. A. Rebeiz (RFFBR), Robert Blankenship (Washington University, St. Louis), Fred Delcomyn and Braj Kachru (both of the University of Illinois), a recognition plaque and a monetary award to Govindjee. Govindjee was recognized for his devoted and distinguished carrier centered on the promotion of photosynthesis research at the national and international levels, and his continued efforts after retirement, as an editor par-excellence of chloroplast and photosynthesis books.
