It gives very fine images and clearly shows the details of the gland. It is viscous and has a relatively high iodine content. However, Lipiodol UF drops sometimes remain in the salivary gland and in the adjacent tissues for a long time and may cause irritation. We report a case where Lipiodol UF leaked from Stensen's duct and was not resorbed after a period of 70 months.

World Journal of Gastroenterology, 2009Co-Authors: Ming Chao, Guangqiang Zhang, Fei DongAbstract:Pulmonary and cerebral Lipiodol embolism after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) of hepatocellular carcinoma is rare. To our knowledge, only 7 cases have been reported in the literature. We present a case of pulmonary and cerebral Lipiodol embolism, and analyzed retrospectively the imaging and clinical data of the patient and conclude the most probable mechanism of pulmonary and cerebral Lipiodol embolism, which is different from that of the cases reported previously.

Cerebral Lipiodol Embolism: A Complication of Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

A 70-year-old woman with a large unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma underwent TACE. Her level of consciousness deteriorated after the procedure, and magnetic resonance imaging and non-contrast computed tomography revealed a cerebral Lipiodol embolism. Despite intensive care, the patient died 2 weeks later. The complication might have been due to systemic-pulmonary shunts caused by previous surgeries and/or direct invasion of the recurrent tumor.

World Journal of Gastroenterology, 2015Co-Authors: Keiichi Hatamaru, Shunjiro Azuma, Takuji Akamatsu, Takeshi Seta, Shunji Urai, Yoshito Uenoyama, Yukitaka Yamashita, Kazuo OnoAbstract:We report an extremely rare case of pulmonary Lipiodol embolism with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A 77-year-old man who was diagnosed with a huge HCC was admitted for TACE. Immediately after the procedure, this patient experienced severe dyspnea. We suspected that his symptoms were associated with a pulmonary Lipiodol embolism after TACE, and we began intensive treatment. However, his condition did not improve, and he died on the following day. A subsequent autopsy revealed that the cause of death was ARDS due to pulmonary Lipiodol embolism. No cases have been previously reported for which an autopsy was performed to explain the most probable mechanism of pulmonary Lipiodol embolism; thus, ours is the first report for such a rare case.
