    Abstract:

    The village of Zapotitlan de las Salinas is situated in the Valley of Tehuacan-Cuicatlan, Puebla, Mexico. Plant species used by the local inhabitants to treat gastrointestinal diseases were identified using ethnobotanical, ethnographic and taxonomic methods. Out of 119 interviews, 44 plant species were registered, of which the following are the most frequently used (listed in descending order): Lippia graveolens H.B. et K. (Verbenaceae), Lantana achyranthifolia Desf. (Verbenaceae), Turnera diffusa (Willd.) ex Schult. (Turneraceae), Lippia oaxacana Rob. et Greenm. (Verbenaceae), Gymnolaena oaxacana (Greenm.) Rydb. (Asteraceae), Cordia curassavica (Jacq.) Roem. et Schult. (Boraginaceae), Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) and Acalypha hederacea Torrey (Euphorbiaceae). From these plants, hexane, chloroform and ethanol extracts were prepared in order to assess their antibacterial activity against 14 bacterial strains causing the most common gastrointestinal diseases in Mexican population. All hexane extracts showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. There is a correlation between the frequency of mention (of plant use) and the antibacterial activity. In conclusion, the knowledge of plants most frequently used for gastrointestinal infections in Zapotitlan de las Salinas is supported by scientific rationale.

    Abstract:

    The aim of this study was to identify the factors that influence the use of Lippia multiflora or knowledge about it. The study showed that L. multiflora is sold more by women than by men (159 people versus 41); The leaf and the stem are the two most used organs, while the decoction is the most used pharmaceutical form; This plant treats 18 diseases, of which cough is the most credible; Young people (18-35 years old) have very little knowledge about the ethno-medical importance of L. multiflora; The Pende and Yansi socio-cultural groups are more familiar with L. multiflora than other ethnic groups (IGKPAC ? 3.80%); L. multiflora is moderately vulnerable in its natural habitat. Given its ethno-medical importance for the population and its scientifically validated pharmacological properties, it is desirable to develop sustainable strategies for the conservation of this species. One option to be explored is its domestication for use as a material for the manufacture of phyto-medical products. Thus, the cultivation of L. multiflora in agroecosystems in forest and savannah environments of the DRC is in progress.     Summary The scabicidal activities of two topical emulsion formulations (Lippia oil emulsions A and B), each containing 20% w/w essential oil of Lippia multiflora (Lippia oil), were compared with that of benzyl benzoate emulsion BP using randomized, double blind and group parallel studies. The percentage cure obtained for Lippia oil emulsion A were 50%, 80% and 80% on application for 3, 5 and 7 days, respectively, compared with 30%, 60% and 70% obtained for benzyl benzoate emulsion BP for the same treatment periods. There was no significant difference between the percentages of scabietic subjects cured with the two formulations (A and B) of Lippia oil (P > 0.05). Six adverse effects were reported for the Lippia oil emulsions, while 10 adverse effects were reported for benzyl benzoate emulsion BP. Since the Lippia oil emulsions were more effective and better tolerated than the benzyl benzoate emulsion, they were considered as additional formulations for the treatment of scabies.

    Abstract:

    The essential oil from the leaves of Lippia multiflora Moldenke (Verbenaceae) was tested for its pediculocidal and scabicidal activites against bodylice, headlice and scabies' mites. The 'knockdown' times obtained for bodylice and headlice using Lippia oil preparations were comparatively shorter than those obtained using benzyl benzoate and Delvap Super, a brand of dichlorvos. The lethal effect of the Lippia oil on headlice was increased when applied in an enclosed system that prevented volatilization of the oil while allowing maximum contact of the vapour with the headlice. A 20% v/v preparation of Lippia oil applied to scabietic subjects for 5 consecutive days gave 100% cure compared with 87.5% cure obtained for benzyl benzoate preparation of the same concentration. The GC-MS analysis of oil revealed, among others, the presence of terpineol, alpha- and beta-pinene which are known to be lethal to body and headlice.
