adult learners demographic variable as predictor of access and participation in Literacy Programmes in oyo and ondo states nigeria
Educational Research Review, 2013Co-Authors: Adeshina Abideen, Idowu OladiranAbstract:Literacy is an indispensable foundation that enables young people and adults to engage in learning opportunities at all stages of the learning continuum. Literacy is a prerequisite for the development of personal, social, economic and political empowerment. In Nigeria, attempt to increase access to Literacy education for the enhancement of learners’ daily living include establishing State Agencies for Adult and Non-Formal Education. For the dearth of empirical studies, the study examined the influence of demographic factors on access to basic Literacy education as an indicator for participation for lifeimprovement skills of rural adult learners in Oyo and Ondo states. Survey research design of ex-post facto type was adopted and 1,310 adult learners (Oyo: 579, Ondo: 731) were selected through stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Four research questions complimented with Focus Group Discussion (FGDs) were answered. Literacy Access Questionnaire (r = 0.81) was used to gather information while data were analysed using percentage and context analysis. Findings showed that access was expanded by annual average of 15.04% and 35.07% in Oyo and Ondo states respectively. Significant differences existed in the access to Literacy Programmes from the two states (t = 2.82, df = 1308, p < 0.05). The FGD also shows that the beneficiaries are willing to participate more if the outcome will improve their economic life. There is the need for improved funding of adult basic Literacy; increase post Literacy activities for sustainability of acquired skills and improve curriculum that meets the basic life needs of learners.

the use of two ict tools in adult Literacy Programmes lessons learned
Journal of Education and Practice, 2016Co-Authors: Omobola O Adelore, Sunday A ItasanmiAbstract:The study reported in this paper shed light into the lessons learned using two ICT tools in adult Literacy Programmes. The research design adopted was a descriptive method. Twenty (20) participants were purposively selected in advanced Literacy class from two adult Literacy centres (10 participants each for computer treatment and mobile phone treatment). A survey instrument was developed and pilot tested and .75 Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was obtained to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. The findings reveals that adult learners were highly engaged and motivated to participate in Literacy Programmes during and after been exposed to ICT tools (Weighted Average (WA) = 3.4) and the challenges faced using these ICT tools in adult Literacy Programmes are; lack of ready access to internet, irregular electricity and high cost of personal computer, internet-enabled phone and the required technical support. the impact of family Literacy Programmes on children s Literacy skills and the home Literacy environment
Institute of Education University College London: London UK., 2015Co-Authors: Jon Swain, Olga Cara, John Vorhaus, Jenny LitsterAbstract:This research involved 27 family Literacy Programmes running in 18 Local Authorities in England. We examined: 1) the impact of school-based family Literacy Programmes on young children’s progress in reading and writing 2) how parents translate and implement what they learn in these classes into the home Literacy environment (HLE). The study followed a mixed methods embedded approach; qualitative data from in-depth observations and parental interviews were embedded in a quantitative quasi-experimental design. As the data suggest family Literacy Programmes have a positive effect on Key Stage 1 children’s reading scores: children who attended the Programmes made greater gains in their reading than children who did not attend Programmes (effect size of 0.17). The also were extensive changes in the home Literacy environment experienced by families participating in the Programmes.
