    Abstract:

    Livestock is a dominant agricultural activity in  Sub Saharan Africa, which  is generally considered a key asset for most rural population  and  contribute to the livelihoods and nutrition of purely subsistence households.  This discussion is a synthesis of possible strategies to consider for sustaianble Livestock Production, focusing on issues of climate change, gender, smallholder Livestock support and use of indigenous knowledge systems, and how these may influence  Livestock Production.  There are many measures which need to be explored with the aim of making the Livestock systems become driving forces of sustainable agricultural development.   One of the major factors responsible for the declining Livestock  productivity in  the region  is the relegation to the background of the contributions of women in the issues of Livestock Production. On the other hand, climate change and variability  is  now widely regarded as  the most serious challenge facing Sub Saharan Africa, with consequences that go far beyond the effects on the environment, hence affecting most communities indiscriminately. Despite the negative impact of climate change on Livestock Production and biodiversity conservation, poor resources peasant famers are  incentivized to engage in these activities because of the wide spectrum of benefits accrued, such as cash income, food, manure, draft power and hauling services, savings and insurance, and social status and social capital. Since time immemmorial,  indigenous Livestock knowledge systems have been used in smallholder Livestock farming sector, while strengthening Livestock productivity. These are some of the key aspects in promoting Livestock development, through  economically and socially empowering local communities, and consequently providing a way to enable rural communities to break the cycle of poverty. In this discussion, some of the strategic steps that can be adopted for future sustainable    Livestock Production,  include and not limited to the following: promotion of  gender equality and equity in  Livestock Production systems in terms of equal access to Livestock productive resources, boosting climate change mitigation startegies,  and empowering women in Livestock Production decision making.

    Abstract:

    Smallholder Livestock Production systems continue to play a key role in African agriculture. Although smallholder Livestock Production systems have had their own share of success, the truth of the matter is that more needs to be done to make them  more vibrant, sustainable and reliable. With this in mind, achieving sustainable smallholder Livestock Production with emphasis on satisfying basic human needs, improving people’s standard of living, enhancing food security and reducing poverty pose  a surmountable task in Africa.  There are many measures which need to be explored with the aim of making the smallholder Livestock systemsbecome driving forces of African  economies. Some of the strategic steps that can be adopted for future viable  smallholder Livestock Production systems  include and not limited to the following: promotion of  gender equality and equity in smallholder Livestock Production systems, and intensifying activities that support or encourage the utilization of indigenous Livestock genetic resources in smallholder Livestock Production systems. This becomes  crucial in the context of climate change and variability.The need to improve the diversity and response capacity of smallholder Livestock Production systems  to enhance resilience is criticalTherefore, it is against this background that Livestock species  that remarkably possess distinctive qualities enabling them to excel efficiently in the context of the uncertainties of climatic variability need to be promoted to reduce vulnerability in smallholder Livestock Production systems. The use of adaptive genotypes such as the local animal  genetic resources  may sustain smallholder Livestock Production and enhance adaptive capacity of smallholder Livestock Production systems. The integration of micro Livestock into the mainstream smallholder  Livestock Production system also may play a pivotal role in complementing conventional smallholder Livestock Production systemsin enhancing food security and reducing poverty. Simultaneously, planning for women’s participation does, in fact, improve the likelihood that women contribute to smallholder  Livestock Production and improve Livestock productivity. The recognition of the role women play in smallholder  Livestock Production systems   is fundamental to agricultural and rural development in  Africa. Thus improving the status of women within the household and at the community level would deliver significant improvements to smallholder Livestock Production systems and food security.

    Policy makers, developmental agents and researchers are now aware of the need to incorporate gender  issues in smallholder Livestock Production  planning and development in order to improve Livestock productivity in Africa. This discussion  attempt to explore  the role of gender in smallholder Livestock Production,genetic improvement and conservation.Strategies to improve Livestock Production and conservation within the smallholder Livestock sector  will not be successful unless gender related issues are taken into account.Ownership of different Livestock species by men and women in smallholder Livestock Production sector  has been documented, often cattle and larger animals are owned by men, while goat keeping and backyard poultry Production are largely women's domains.  Therefore, it is assumed that taking cognizance of gender differentials in smallholder Livestock Production intervention programs will result in effectively implementation of Livestockdevelopment programs ensuring more optimal outcomes. The rationale for gender integration in Livestock improvement and conservation is driven by the fact that different household members typically hold different Livestock responsibilities; they also may have different Livestock priorities and Livestock Production constraints. Gender sensitive Livestock policy initiatives such as training women in Livestock improvement  and conservation in smallholder Livestock Production sector should be adopted in order to address specific concerns and priorities of women as major stakeholders in Livestock Production.Gendered asymmetries in access to Livestock and  services not only do a great disservice to women and men Livestock smallholder farmers, but they also stifle the potential for more sustainable and effective actions along a given Livestock improvement program. In most cases , where  Livestock improvement and conservation programs  are being carried out, the lack of gender consideration constrains the development of holistic approaches to achieve desirable goals

This discussion is a synthesis of counter productive gender disparities in Livestock Production, focusing on issues of ownership, decision making and access to productive resources, and how these may influence Livestock Production. Livestock Production in general, offers advantages over other agricultural activities and has been used as an entry point for promoting gender balance. However, the contribution of Livestock Production to household welfare in most cases has been insignificant due to various gender disparities. There are many measures which need to be explored with the aim of making the Livestock systems become driving forces of rural household economies. Through the ‘gender lens’ the discussion also examines the roles, activities, responsibilities, opportunities and constraints of women in Livestock Production which compromise the achievement of greater equality between women and men within their spheres of interaction in household Livestock Production. One of the major factors responsible for the declining Livestock productivity in rural areas is the relegation to the background of the contributions of women in the issues of Livestock Production.   • Possible impact and adaptation to climate change in Livestock Production in Southern Africa

    Abstract:

    Southern Africa is one of the most vulnerable regions to climate variability and change because of multiple existing climatic stresses and low adaptive capacity. It is now indisputable that climate change will have a grave effect on Livestock Production in Southern Africa, coming as an additional factor affecting Livestock Production that is already highly dynamic and facing a host of challenges. Climatic change is threatening the sustainability of Livestock Production systems by reinforcing existing stressors such as heat stress, droughts, and flooding events which have lead to reductions in Livestock productivity. This review attempt to explore the likely impacts of climate change on Livestock Production systems, and discuss influence of climate change on water and feeds, Livestock genetics and breeding, and animal health. The expected responses to climate induced environmental stressors on Livestock Production are also highlighted. This is on the understanding that the impact of climate change on Livestock Production through natural disasters and environmental challenges are likely to affect Southern Africa indiscriminately. Livestock Production systems need to adjust through adoption of possible strategies to reduce vulnerability to climate change which affects Livestock Production in various direct and indirect ways. In order to be able to adequately address Livestock Production challenges in the context of climate, there is need for Southern African to carry out thorough climatic vulnerability and adaptation assessments, before responses are suggested. Lack of comprehensive training of experts in carrying out vulnerability and adaptation assessments on Livestock Production, which is crucial in order to develop climate change adaptation measures on Livestock Production has been a major concern. The vulnerability to climate change impact is a function of several biophysical and socioeconomic factors which need to be taken into account.

  • Decision Support Systems for Profitable Livestock Production

    The Agricultural and Related Industries Study Group of the Operational Research Society held a one-day meeting on ‘Decision Support Systems for Profitable Livestock Production’ on 18 November 1992 at the Meat and Livestock Commission, Milton Keynes, UK. The Group promotes the use of the scientific method in solving management problems. The aim of the meeting was to look at the contribution of advances in modelling towards improving management and hence profitability in Livestock Production. The first four papers concerned feeding and the remaining two breeding. A large part of the discussion could perhaps best be summed up by the regression equation which related dry matter intake and waste output from a cow. When the output was zero, the intake was reduced by 50%!

    Abstract This paper examines the spatial changes that occurred in patterns of Livestock Production in Northern Ireland during the period since the United Kingdom's entry into the EC. In a province where agriculture is dominated by Livestock Production, total Livestock numbers and stock densities declined during the period, while the popularity of individual types of Livestock varied, following policy changes both nationally and under the CAP. The paper illustrates and briefly discusses the reasons for such changes, but pays particular attention to the geographical effect they have had in altering spatial patterns of Livestock Production at a regional scale within Northern Ireland.

    Abstract:

    Agriculture is a leading source of employment for rural populations in Kenya. Through a mixed methods approach, this study sought to investigate youth participation in smallholder Livestock Production and marketing in Baringo County. The specific focus is on how social norms and micropolitics enable or constrain participation of particular groups of young people. The study established that personal choice, preference for paid over unpaid labour and gender norms in asset access, ownership and control influence smallholder participation in Livestock Production and trade. This shows a disconnect between Kenya’s youth policy which advocates for equitable distribution of employment opportunities and the reality at community level. Interventions that seek to improve Livestock Production and marketing, particularly involving young people, should therefore adopt strategies that recognise these norms as a first step to addressing social exclusion

    Animals in the Himalayan region are reared basically to supplement the family income and sustain crop Production, and constitute an important component of the rural economy of the region. Given the ecological importance of the Livestock Production system in terms of intrinsic values as a life support system for local people and a contribution towards sustainable agriculture through its role in the maintenance of soil fertility, the present study was conducted. This paper describes and assesses the current status of Livestock Production systems, monetary input/output, status of available forest resources, current level of pressure on the Livestock Production system and recommends strategies for sustainable development of a Livestock Production system in the Rawain Valley of Central Himalaya.
