2017Co-Authors: Amber D Walkerbolton, Joyce A PargaAbstract:Sexual selection for honest behavioral displays of quality has driven the development of remarkably complex courtship behavior in many animal species. Olfactory displays are often overlooked as an area of inquiry compared to auditory and visual displays. Ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) scent marking of substrates has been studied extensively, although the Male olfactory displays of anointing and wafting tails to feMales has received relatively little attention. We studied the role of Male olfactory displays to feMales, evaluating whether such signals function as honest, costly signals of Male Dominance status in two groups of wild L. catta at Berenty Reserve, Madagascar. Our results suggest that Male tail anointing and tail wafting displays to pre-estrous and estrous feMales are correlated with Male Dominance rank, and moreover appear to operate as costly signals, as such displays increase aggression received from Males and feMales while other types of scent marking do not. Furthermore, feMales showed greater mating preference (as measured by sexual presents) for resident Males who performed the "anoint tail" and "waft tail" displays towards them. When Males perform the "anoint tail" and "waft tail" displays to feMales, they receive higher levels of aggression than if they were to perform other types of scent marking. Interestingly, immigrating (peripheral) Males performed the "anoint tail" and "waft tail" displays at higher rates than resident Males, which could honestly indicate their quality or may simply be associated with the alternative mating strategy of transferring between groups to gain mating opportunities. Our finding that tail anointing and tail wafting displays function as honest signals of Dominance for resident Males-and that these costly displays appear to positively affect feMale mate choice-is the first evidence of this function for this particular olfactory signal in L. catta.

However, the existence of feMale multiple mating and alternative Male mating strategies can call into question single-Male monopolization of paternity in groups. Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are seasonally breeding primates that live in multi-Male, multi-feMale groups. Although established groups show Male Dominance hierarchies, Male Dominance relationships can break down during mating periods. In addition, feMales are the dominant sex and mate with multiple Males during estrus, including group residents, and extra-group Males-posing the question of whether there is high or low Male paternity skew in groups. In this study, we analyzed paternity in a population of wild L. catta from the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve in southwestern Madagascar. Paternity was determined with 80-95% confidence for 39 offspring born to nine different groups. We calculated Male reproductive skew indices for six groups, and our results showed a range of values corresponding to both high and low reproductive skew. Between 21% and 33% of offspring (3 of 14 or three of nine, counting paternity assignments at the 80% or 95% confidence levels, respectively) were sired by extra-troop Males. Males siring offspring within the same group during the same year appear to be unrelated. Our study provides evidence of varying Male reproductive skew in different L. catta groups. A single Male may monopolize paternity across one or more years, while in other groups, >1 Male can sire offspring within the same group, even within a single year. Extra-group mating is a viable strategy that can result in extra-group paternity for L. catta Males.

Indirect fitness benefits are not related to Male Dominance in a killifish
2009Co-Authors: Matej Polačik, Martin ReichardAbstract:Recent theoretical and empirical studies have shown that Male Dominance is often at odds with feMale mate preference and that indirect (genetic) benefits of mate choice may not be related to Male Dominance. We tested whether feMale preference corresponded to Male Dominance and whether mating with dominant Males conveyed benefits to offspring fitness in a small freshwater fish, the African annual killifish Nothobranchius korthausae (Cyprinodontiformes), a species without parental care. The experimental design used controlled for the effect of Male age, possibility of sperm and egg depletion, and accounted for a potential that feMales express their preference through maternal effects by manipulation of egg mass during ovulation. By sequentially mating feMales with Males of known Dominance, we found that feMale N. korthausae showed no mate preference in terms of egg numbers deposited with respect to Male Dominance or body size and no congruent mate preference to specific Males was detected. However, Males sired offspring with consistently higher hatching success and the effect was repeatable across individual feMales. Thus, some Males provided feMales with indirect benefits related to additive genetic quality (“good genes”) and expressed via increased hatching rate, but this benefit was not related to Male Dominance status or body size.

Although experimental studies have shown that feMales often mate with dominant Males, it may not always be in the interest of a feMale to do so. Here we investigated the impact of Male Dominance on feMale mate choice and offspring growth and survival in the rose bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus), a freshwater fish with a resource-based mating system. Three experimental mating trials were conducted using Males of known Dominance rank, but with different levels of constraint on Male behavior. Thus, feMales were able to choose among; (1) Males that were isolated from each other; (2) Males that could see and smell each other, but could not directly interact; (3) Males that could interact fully. Using a combination of behavioral observation and parentage analyses it was shown that feMale preferences did not correspond with Male Dominance and that Male aggression and Dominance constrained feMale mate choice, resulting in a potential intersexual conflict. The survival of offspring to independence was significantly correlated with feMale mate preferences, but not with Male Dominance. A lack of strong congruence in feMale preference for Males suggested a role for parental haplotype compatibility in mate choice.

We experimentally separated intrasexual (Male-Male interference competition) and intersexual (feMale choice) components of sexual selection in a freshwater fish, the European bitterling (Rhodeus sericeus). We compared the roles of multiple morphological and behavioural traits in Male success in both components of sexual competition, and their relation to Male reproductive success, measured as paternity of offspring. Body size was important for both feMale choice and Male-Male competition, though feMales also preferred Males that courted more vigorously. However, dominant Males often monopolized feMales regardless of feMale preference. Subordinate Males were not excluded from reproduction and sired some offspring, possibly through sneaked ejaculations. Male Dominance and a greater intensity of carotenoid-based red colouration in their iris were the best predictors of Male reproductive success. The extent of red iris colouration and parasite load did not have significant effects on feMale choice, Male Dominance or Male reproductive success. No effect of parasite load on the expression of red eye colouration was detected, though this may have been due to low parasite prevalence in Males overall. In conclusion, we showed that even though larger body size was favoured in both intersexual and intrasexual selection, Male-Male interference competition reduced opportunities for feMale choice. FeMales, despite being choosy, had limited control over the paternity of their offspring. Our study highlights the need for reliable measures of Male reproductive success in studies of sexual selection.

2006Co-Authors: Rowena Spence, Carl SmithAbstract:Mating success tends to be skewed toward dominant Males, though feMale mate preferences may not always correlate with Male Dominance. In this study, we investigated the mating preferences of feMale zebrafish, Danio rerio, in the absence of Male‐Male competition. We paired feMales sequentially with Males of known Dominance rank, using a nested, repeated measures design, with egg production as a measure of feMale mate preference. We predicted that feMales would spawn more frequently and produce larger clutches when paired with Males of higher Dominance rank. We found significant differences among feMales in the size of clutches produced and among Males in the size of clutches received, but these differences were independent of Male Dominance rank. Male body size was not related to either Dominance rank or clutch size received. These results indicate that feMales vary clutch size in relation to the Males with which they are paired but that they do not favor dominant Males.
