    Abstract:

    Marine Algae have received great attention as natural photoprotective agents due to their unique and exclusive bioactive substances which have been acquired as an adaptation to the extreme Marine environment combine with a range of physical parameters. These photoprotective substances include mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), sulfated polysaccharides, carotenoids, and polyphenols. Marine algal photoprotective substances exhibit a wide range of biological activities such as ultraviolet (UV) absorbing, antioxidant, matrix-metalloproteinase inhibitors, anti-aging, and immunomodulatory activities. Hence, such unique bioactive substances derived from Marine Algae have been regarded as having potential for use in skin care, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical products. In this context, this contribution aims at revealing bioactive substances found in Marine Algae, outlines their photoprotective potential, and provides an overview of developments of blue biotechnology to obtain photoprotective substances and their prospective applications.

    The health of the brain plays a critical role in day-today activity as equally as the health of the rest of the body, and hence maintaining brain health is vital as you age. In fact, many neurological disorders are hard to reverse after they arise, and the best available option for such complications is prevention. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest in the substances that can improve brain health and protect brain from adverse elements. For quite long, many natural sources have been screened for potential neuroprotective ingredients. Among the potential sources that have brain protective metabolites, Marine Algae have received considerable attention. In this chapter, we aim to compile available literature and reveal the neuroprotective potential of Marine Algae-derived materials.

    Recently, much attention has been paid by consumers toward natural bioactive compounds as functional ingredients in nutraceuticals. Marine Algae are considered as valuable sources of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. Marine Algae are rich in sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) such as carrageenans in red Algae, fucoidans in brown Algae and ulvans in green Algae. These SPs exhibit many health beneficial nutraceutical effects such as antioxidant, anti-allergic, anti-human immunodeficiency virus, anticancer and anticoagulant activities. Therefore, Marine Algae derived SPs have great potential to be further developed as medicinal food products or nutraceuticals in the food industry. This contribution presents an overview of nutraceutical effects and potential health benefits of SPs derived from Marine Algae.

The cell walls of Marine Algae are rich in sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) such as fucoidans in brown Algae, carrageenans in red Algae and ulvans in green Algae. These SPs exhibit many beneficial biological activities such as anticoagulant, antiviral, antioxidative, anticancer and immunomodulating activities. Therefore, Marine Algae derived SPs have great potential for further development as products in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical areas. This contribution presents an overview of biological activities and potential health benefits of SPs derived from Marine Algae.

Among Marine organisms, Marine Algae have been identified as an under-exploited plant resource, although they have long been recognized as valuable sources of structurally diverse bioactive compounds. Presently, several lines of studies have provided insight into biological activities and neuroprotective effects of Marine Algae including antioxidant, anti-neuroinflammatory, cholinesterase inhibitory activity and the inhibition of neuronal death. Hence, Marine Algae have great potential to be used for neuroprotection as part of pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and functional foods. This contribution presents an overview of Marine algal neuroprotective effects and their potential application in neuroprotection.

Therefore, isolation and investigation of novel ingredients with biological activities from Marine Algae have attracted a great deal of attention. Among functional ingredients identified from Marine Algae, natural pigments (NPs) have received particular attention. These NPs exhibit various beneficial biological activities such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-angiogenic and neuroprotective activities. This contribution focuses on biological activities of Marine Algae-derived NPs and emphasizing their potential applications in foods as well as pharmaceuticals areas.

Therefore, Marine Algae-derived phlorotannins and SPs have great potential for developing as anticoagulant drugs in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical areas.
