    Previous studies of the Fertility decline in Europe are often limited to an earlier stage of the Marital Fertility decline, when the decline tended to be slower and before the large increase in earnings in the 1920s. Starting in 1860 (before the onset of the decline), this study follows Marital Fertility trends until 1939, when Fertility reached lower levels than ever before. Using data from the Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN), this study shows that mortality decline, a rise in real income, and unemployment account for the decline in the Netherlands. This finding suggests that Marital Fertility decline was an adjustment to social and economic change, leaving little room for attitudinal change that is independent of social and economic change.

    Previous studies of the Marital Fertility transition in Europe have found religious differentials. Using data collected from the population registers of The Hague, our aim in this study is to search for answers to the following questions: whether religious differentials result from socio-economic characteristics; to what extent religious ideology explains the behaviour of religious groups; which proximate determinants account for the religious differentials; and whether the Jews were forerunners in the Marital Fertility transition in Europe. The results provide some evidence of relatively low levels of parity-dependent Fertility control among Jews before the transition and among Catholics during the transition. Religious ideology probably accounts for the low level of Fertility control among Catholics. The ultimate reason for the relatively high Marital Fertility among Jews before the transition remains unclear. Our findings do not support the hypothesis that Jews were forerunners in the Marital Fertility transition.

    This study examines the relationship between religiosity and Marital Fertility in a Muslim society around the onset of the transition using the 1973—74 Israeli Fertility Survey. In rural areas, where no decline was discernable, there was a negative relationship between religiosity and Marital Fertility, while in urban areas there was no relationship. The results of this study suggest that the negative relationship in rural areas is because of differences in breast-feeding. Following Quranic recommendations, the more religious seem to breast-feed longer. Demographic, social, and economic characteristics of the more and less religious do not account for the negative relationship. Demographic, social, and economic characteristics and the use of contraceptive methods, however, do explain, in part, the absence of a negative relationship in urban areas.

    Abstract:

    This paper presents a new method for estimating the time of the onset of Marital Fertility decline. The proposed method produces a maximum likelihood least squares estimate for the point of change in a sequence of Marital Fertility indexes. It is suggested that the proposed method has certain advantages over previous attempts to estimate the time of the onset of Marital Fertility decline.

    Research in the 1980s pointed to the lower marriage rates of blacks as an important factor contributing to race differences in non-Marital Fertility. Our analyses update and extend this prior work to investigate whether cohabitation has become an important contributor to this variation. We use data from the 2006–2010 National Survey of Family Growth to identify the relative contribution of population composition (i.e., percent sexually active single and percent cohabiting) versus rates (pregnancy rates, post-conception marriage rates) to race-ethnic variation in non-Marital Fertility rates (N = 7,428). We find that the pregnancy rate among single (not cohabiting) women is the biggest contributor to race-ethnic variation in the non-Marital Fertility rate and that contraceptive use patterns among racial minorities explain the majority of the race-ethnic differences in pregnancy rates.

    We examine recent Fertility trends in Ethiopia for evidence of short- and long-term responses to famine, political events, and economic decline. We use retrospective data on children ever born from the 1990 National Family and Fertility Survey to estimate trends in annual Marital conception probabilities, controlling for women’s demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. The results of our analysis provide evidence of significant short-term declines in conception probabilities during years of famine and major political and economic upheaval. In the longer term, Marital Fertility in both urban and rural areas declined in the 1980s after increasing moderately in the 1970s.

  • The impact of war and economic crisis on Marital Fertility in Ethiopia: evidence from urban areas and the rural central highlands.

    This paper examines trends in Marital Fertility in the context of political instability war and famines during 1974-91 in Ethiopia. Retrospective data are obtained from an urban sample and from a rural sample from the central highlands. The highlands were not a site of civil unrest or droughts. Fertility is measured by Marital conceptions during 1972-88 based on the Ethiopian calendar year. Findings indicate that Marital Fertility among women aged under 35 years changed little in urban areas between 1973-75 and 1980-82. Marital Fertility did decline significantly during the 1980s to 3.3 children per urban woman and 3.9 per rural woman. Adolescent Fertility among urban women aged 15-19 years increased but this increase was offset by increased age at marriage. In the rural sample Marital Fertility among women aged under 35 years increased between 1973-75 and 1980-82 and declined moderately during the 1980s. The mean age at marriage remained stable during the 1970s and increased during the 1980s. Logistic regression models reveal that maternal education even at the primary level had a positive effect on the probability of conception during the 1970s and was significantly associated with lower Fertility during the 1980s. Graphs demonstrate that there were significant declines in conception risks in 1974 1978 and 1980 due to war and inflation. The worst war year was 1978 and the conception risk declined by about 28% during 1977-78. The timing of declines in conception risks corresponded more closely with peaks in military attacks than declines in gross domestic product or inflationary increases. Declines in military attacks and inflation were associated with significant increases in conception risks. Conception risks were lower after 1981. The drop in Fertility during the 1980s did not appear to be associated with family planning efforts or cohort changes in womens education.
